I'll just get this off of my chest quickly and leave you all to your freaking out: IT WAS A JOKE!!!!! Like when Democrats say we wand to move to Canada or secede from the union. We have this thing called a sense of humor; it help us deal with defeat. And as Democrats, we definatly need something to help (see! There that humor thing was again!).

As someone who heard this on the show, taken in its entirety it was quite obvious it was a joke. It also came across as a bit of a whiny, bitter joke, but I had no doubt it was a joke (remember this is coming from a conservative Christian).

I am a democrat. I condemn Keilor as a total outcast of the democratic party unreservedly.

But neither Jews nor Muslims believe that their actions on Earth are largely irrelevent, so the joke doesn't fit as well. So no, not funny and ignores the historical subtext of the whole idea.

Another blogger here, who I would have never have expected it from, said on one of my blogs:

The Constitution of the United States for instance, the laws of the Congress and the Laws of the States, and of course, the Supreme Court of the United States."

I can't decide if this is sublimated hate that is now slipping out because they just can't hide it after Kerry's loss, or just ineptitude at trying to validate their tired belief that their values are universal in the face of evidence that more than 50% of the nation disagrees with them.

I mean, my God, look at Kingbee's post #15. Have you ever seen such wacko conspiracy stuff? I'm sure Keillor was joking, because he has expressed his appreciation for the "sturdy" values of these folks in his home state countless times that I have heard in his radio broadcasts. Others, though, are creeping me out. These are the people that wouldn't tolerate the SUGGESTION of repressing a Muslim because of the "dangers" to our nation, and yet now when they think THEIR values might be challenged, in a totally acceptable way according to the process of Democracy... well, I don't want to consider what they are thinking.

Let's just have faith in the hope this is a group of know-it-alls that are suddenly going cold-turkey from their idea of pre-eminence and handling it poorly.

ive no doubt keillor was joking.  whether the joke was funny--or insensitive--is a matter of perspective. my feeling is that the humor suffers--and the insensitivity results--from a lack of focus.  born-again christians are too broad a target; it shoulda have been aimed at those specifically determined to overturn the current government by establishing an 'earthly dominion'.  rather than expressing the thought as a personal fantasy--thus setting himself up to be this week's michael moore proxy--keillor could have as easily pulled a hattrick by noting the irony of  activists, crusading to make us all citizens of the new american kingdom of god on earth, finding themselves at risk of having their own us citizenship involuntarily relinquished as a consequence of the proposed patriot act ll: a law easily attributed to divine revelation through the prophet ashcroft and enacted by the very majority they claim to have put in office.

its not all christians and it's not their faith...its their publicly expressed determination to make this country a theocracy.  write it off as paranoia instead of addressing it if you like, but consider this: 'campaigns and elections' a respected political trade mag estimates that as of 2002, 36 local republican party organizations were controlled by these people.

And LW's implied question remains. How many State Democrat organizations are controlled by Unions, Feminists, Greens, etc. Simply put, the farter you are to the ends of the political spectrum, the more likely you are to be involved in local and state and national politics (vs just voting). So sure, while the party machinery may be controlled by the extremist on both sides, the politicans are not. That is what primaries are for (and why the Caucuses have generally been abandoned).

You know what? Forget it. I'm not going to try and keep people from going nuts over a joke they didn't find funny. I found it funny. I laughed because of course something like that would never happen. And of course it was a bitter joke. That's pretty much all we liberals have at the moment to consol us. If this joke really makes you feel bad, go look on the web for some jokes at liberal's expense, read them, laughl, and move the hell on.
