Democrats: Christians should not get to vote

Interesting view..

http://maroon.uchicago.edu/news/articles/2004/11/07/npr_star_keillor_tel.php

Here's an interesting view point from a well known Democrat: Born again Christians shouldn't get to vote:

Following University President Don Randel’s warm introduction, the famed author, host, and wry wit of A Prairie Home Companion, started by commenting on election results.

“I am a Democrat—it’s no secret. I am a museum-quality Democrat,” Keillor said. “Last night I spent my time crouched in a fetal position, rolling around and moaning in the dark.”

Not one to shy away from speaking his mind, Keillor proposed a solution to what he deemed a fundamental problem with U.S. elections. “I’m trying to organize support for a constitutional amendment to deny voting rights to born-again Christians,” Keillor smirked. “I feel if your citizenship is in Heaven—like a born again Christian’s is—you should give up your citizenship. Sorry, but this is my new cause. If born again Christians are allowed to vote in this country, then why not Canadians?”

haha......well, you can see that thought process here even, although, with not so many words describing it.

Every Vote Counts....unless you are contrary to what the Dems believe....hahah....yeah....

I'll just get this off of my chest quickly and leave you all to your freaking out: IT WAS A JOKE!!!!! Like when Democrats say we wand to move to Canada or secede from the union. We have this thing called a sense of humor; it help us deal with defeat. And as Democrats, we definatly need something to help (see! There that humor thing was again!).

Ive long been a fan of A prairie home companion.

And this is the first you've heard Keillor speak about his politics? What show have you been listning too?

Democrats need to work on their presentation. When I've heard Democrats say that they'll move to Canada and that the majority of Americans are idiots, or that Bush is like Hitler, or that the South consists of country bumpkins who don't know a damn thing, it sounds as though they're being serious. They should clarify that officially.

If I lived on Lake Woe-be-Gone and had to eat powdermilk biscuits, I'd be raising hell too!

but the question arises.....what if a bill was introduced (and, if congress was primarily a democratic congress)....would it be a joke then? or would you so subtly slide on the side to get rid of Christians' vote? So far, quite a bit of the liberals that are here, already want to toss out everything that Christians believe.....all the way down to why they voted the way they voted (Moral Issues)

oh, yeah....which was the wrong way to vote, according to democrats

I love how some Democrats have committed suicide, now that is either a sick sense of humor (in a normal person's mind, my sense of humor in my mind) or it is not a joke.
Either openly state your intention to be funny or don't try to be funny.

Now, I just need to figure out how I can tie in a man on fire, a plinko machine, Ann Coulter, Garrison Keillor, Muppets, and Hot wax into a joke and I will be set for a Stand-up Comedy routine.

As someone who heard this on the show, taken in its entirety it was quite obvious it was a joke. It also came across as a bit of a whiny, bitter joke, but I had no doubt it was a joke (remember this is coming from a conservative Christian).

I thought it was kind of clever - not exactly funny, but it brought a smile to my face just because of the sheer ridiculousness of the idea. It kind of mimics the old "Don't let atheists into positions of authority because they don't believe in an afterlife" argument. Thanks for posting the joke Draginol!

It was a joke. We all get that.

That doesn't make it acceptable.  Replace "Born Again Christians" with the word "Jews" or "Muslims".  Still "funny"?

But neither Jews nor Muslims believe that their actions on Earth are largely irrelevent, so the joke doesn't fit as well. So no, not funny and ignores the historical subtext of the whole idea.

hard-core dominionists make no secret of their determination to annex the usa to the kingdom of heaven...literally.  their muslim counterparts in the islamic republic of iran and usama's undisclosed location make no secret of their determination to do the same thing on an international scale.  fundamentalist jews aren's secretive about their plan to reestablish the biblical israel ruled by jehovah.

i'm not amused either.

i recognize a difference between 'dominionists' and 'born-again christians' or 'christians' of any type who aren't planning to use their affiliation and clout as leverage to usurp the constitution.  it's past time for the latter to make it clear they don't support dominionism--just as its past time for moderates of all stripes to repudiate the fanatics who claim to represent them.

Another blogger here, who I would have never have expected it from, said on one of my blogs:

"Actually, you're right, I can't define subservience for everyone, but fortunately there are things which you can either accept can, or you have no business being in this country. The Constitution of the United States for instance, the laws of the Congress and the Laws of the States, and of course, the Supreme Court of the United States."

I can't decide if this is sublimated hate that is now slipping out because they just can't hide it after Kerry's loss, or just ineptitude at trying to validate their tired belief that their values are universal in the face of evidence that more than 50% of the nation disagrees with them.

I mean, my God, look at Kingbee's post #15. Have you ever seen such wacko conspiracy stuff? I'm sure Keillor was joking, because he has expressed his appreciation for the "sturdy" values of these folks in his home state countless times that I have heard in his radio broadcasts. Others, though, are creeping me out. These are the people that wouldn't tolerate the SUGGESTION of repressing a Muslim because of the "dangers" to our nation, and yet now when they think THEIR values might be challenged, in a totally acceptable way according to the process of Democracy... well, I don't want to consider what they are thinking.

Let's just have faith in the hope this is a group of know-it-alls that are suddenly going cold-turkey from their idea of pre-eminence and handling it poorly.

Draginol, If Keillor said this, then it was wrong and misguided whether it was a joke or not but I don't think it represents the thinking of a majority of Democrats. I think BakerStreet was correct when he said "I'm sure Keillor was joking, because he has expressed his appreciation for the "sturdy" values of these folks in his home state countless times that I have heard in his radio broadcasts." You were right to say "That doesn't make it acceptable. Replace "Born Again Christians" with the word "Jews" or "Muslims". Still "funny"?" No. None of it is funny. However, I have not seen Keillor's comments reiterated as the new Democratic Party mantra anywhere. There will always be extremists, misguided thinking, and people who make tasteless jokes in any group, including the Republican party and in other groups, but I don't think Keillor's remarks are an accurate reflection of the left or of Democrats in general as your title suggests.

ive no doubt keillor was joking.  whether the joke was funny--or insensitive--is a matter of perspective. my feeling is that the humor suffers--and the insensitivity results--from a lack of focus.  born-again christians are too broad a target; it shoulda have been aimed at those specifically determined to overturn the current government by establishing an 'earthly dominion'.  rather than expressing the thought as a personal fantasy--thus setting himself up to be this week's michael moore proxy--keillor could have as easily pulled a hattrick by noting the irony of  activists, crusading to make us all citizens of the new american kingdom of god on earth, finding themselves at risk of having their own us citizenship involuntarily relinquished as a consequence of the proposed patriot act ll: a law easily attributed to divine revelation through the prophet ashcroft and enacted by the very majority they claim to have put in office.

'muslims have an obligation, a mandate, a commission, a holy responsibility to reclaim the land for allah-- to have sharia in civil structures, just as in every other aspect of life and godliness.

but it is sharia we are after. not just a voice.

it is sharia we are after. not just influence.

it is sharia we are after. not just equal time.

it is sharia we are after.

world conquest. that's what allah has commissioned us to accomplish. We must win the world with the power of the qu'ran. and we must never settle for anything less... thus, muslim politics has as its primary intent the conquest of the land -- of men, families, institutions, bureaucracies, courts, and governments for the caliphate of allah.

yall cool with that?

by changing 'muslim' to christian,  'allah' to christ or jesus christ, 'sharia' to dominion, 'qu'ran' to bible and 'caliphate' to kingdom...and youll have an exact quote from a book by george grant (former director of coral ridge ministries--with a 3.5 million listener weekly audience) entitled The Changing of the Guard, Biblical Principles for Political Action

why is it socially acceptable to attack christians for their faith?

its not all christians and it's not their faith...its their publicly expressed determination to make this country a theocracy.  write it off as paranoia instead of addressing it if you like, but consider this: 'campaigns and elections' a respected political trade mag estimates that as of 2002, 36 local republican party organizations were controlled by these people.

Hmm, I don't think I ever said it was a funny joke. Nor an acceptable one. I thought it was rather pathetic actually.

Just seemed to demonstrate an increasingly evident trend for whining and bitterness from the left since the election. But nothing surprising.

sorry..it was 36 state party organizations.

i keep making a distinction youre ignoring or not reading between all other christians and dominionists.
i realize that inflames the issue to your advantage...so youve made my point for me i guess.

Democrats just cant joke. Remeber Hillary and her Ghandi Joke? Yesterday, I heard Jeanine Garofalo trying to be nice to the 60m that voted for Bush. Yet she still came off as insulting and demeaning to the 60m.

The simple fact of the matter iw, the only group of americans that can be legally discriminated against are White Male Christians. As Draginol said, if you substitute jews or muslim (or Blacks or Hispanics), he woul dhave been castigated back into the stone age.

Democrats need to learn how to have a sense of humor before they can start making good jokes that dont offend half the audience.

And LW's implied question remains. How many State Democrat organizations are controlled by Unions, Feminists, Greens, etc. Simply put, the farter you are to the ends of the political spectrum, the more likely you are to be involved in local and state and national politics (vs just voting). So sure, while the party machinery may be controlled by the extremist on both sides, the politicans are not. That is what primaries are for (and why the Caucuses have generally been abandoned).

ooo, 3.5 million. that's a little more than 1/100th of the US population, and a teeny minority of the 150+ million Americans that consider themselves Christians. Also, looking at it that way assumes everyone that listens to him agrees with that agenda, which is never true either.

But because a small minority of Christians feel a certain way, Kingbee seems to be scared of Christians. Sound familiar... in terms of your own Muslim analogy? In addition, another point that Kingbee REFUSES to admit, is that activism, political participation, and voting ISN'T A CRIME. Organizations like NoW and the ACLU are making political war on EVERY law or policy they disagree with. Christians, of whatever bias, aren't allowed to do the same?

Of course they are. The Christian minority in question isn't doing anything any different than NoW or any other biased organization. They aren't beheading people and promoting armed uprising, so people need to shut the hell up and oppose them in the same spirit THEY are being opposed, through political activism and with their votes.

*Sigh*

You know what? Forget it. I'm not going to try and keep people from going nuts over a joke they didn't find funny. I found it funny. I laughed because of course something like that would never happen. And of course it was a bitter joke. That's pretty much all we liberals have at the moment to consol us. If this joke really makes you feel bad, go look on the web for some jokes at liberal's expense, read them, laughl, and move the hell on.
