Leaving midgame

Unfortunately, the majority of people play this just to win. This comes straight from DotA; everyone leaves once it becomes evident that they aren't winning.

In the "professional" gaming world, when a player knows he will lose he is expected to quit so as to avoid wasting any more time on a game that has already been decided.  Some games encourage this heavily.

If its totaly obvious that one team is going to lose no matter what they do, I have no problems in them quiting . Now having said that, what really irritates me are the guys who die once or twice and Rage quit leaving the other two members of their team to now play a game they will obviously lose. The games not lost based on 1 or 2 kills.

Yes Coven, most of the "quitters" in my games were right after a 2nd (or 3rd) death.  With the "sub-par" AI, it's usually GG for the players left (ulnless there are a majority of new or intermediate players).  I think they should have an "offer Surrender" button, there may be some miss-use of it, but basically, the winning team offers the losing one an honerable surrender.  Then the losing team can choose to surrender, or fight to the end. 

This would REALLY go a long way to the constant paradox I see in games like this: if you quit if your losing, so your opponents won't have to "mop up", they may call you a rage quitter.  But sometimes you stick it out and fight to the end, and suddenly your a "spoiler" who's trying to be a pain in the butt to the winners.  Some people totally love getting to see the citadel crumble in victory after their hard-fought win; others just wish you'd GG fast when it's obvious your losing.  A "Your Opponents have offered you an Honerable Surrener" button (one use per game) would sure solve a lot of these bad sport/good sport confusions.

make it so that people lose favor when they quit early.. you could have it be like 100 favor within 0 - 10 minutes of the game starting, 75 for 10-15 mins of game starting, 50 for 15-20 mins of game starting, 0 from there on

just throwin an idea out there that might deter people from leaving so early..

I hate this mentality.  I have won games that were "surely" lost.

I don't tip my King when I go down a Knight either.

It seems more that players quit over having to respawn a few times rather than the general tilt of the match, I've had people quit matches after dying 2-3 times in a row even when their team was clearly winning by quite a lot.

The only problem with people leaving mid-game after they now they lost is that the winners dont get favor if everybody leaves and only AIs are left.

Well, that's broken right there. There needs to be somethign in the game to make it so quiting half way through still gives the opposing team some favor. They need to add a "surrender" option.

Well in professional gaming you can predict when you will loose quite well.

And I have to differtiate between the two possible situations.

Like GunslingerBara said it's  expected that you give up if you see a clear lose.

But on the other hand all professional players will fight to the last second if there is a slim chance of winning.

And that is the difference to most people here.

They leave if they are killed three times in a row. But especially in dominate that means nothing.

And the second difference to professional gamers is that those give up with full appraisal and respect for the winner and don't quit and run out of the hall.

That's the reason why I am for a capitulate button.

Because people leave because that game is not fun any more for them.

The problem is, the player still in the game needs to play till the end vs AIs and is cheated about his fun.

A capitulate button would increase fun for boh people: The loser has the chance to play a new game with hopefully better odds for him and the winner gets the deserved win.

people who leave are just gonna leave, they are not going to stop and consider your feelings and go through some GUI dialog to leave.

First it would help if the "end game" option is taken away in any match vs players and there would be only a dialog: "do you want to capitulate?" only after that you could leave without shutting the game down. And that would kinda force the other players to vote for capitulate too. Hey perhaps it would be a nice idea to remove your demigod if you exit via this method instead of giving it to AI controll.

And additionally it would be improving the constancy/persistency of the game matches if penalties for exiting would be implemented. I dont mean anything harsh but some large markings of how many DCs someone has or some minor favor point loses. And if using the "capitulate button" avoids that(and gives you the full points) my guess would be that many would do so.

And even if those game side methods wouldn't work, it would at least provide me and many other with the little satisfaction of the knwodledge that those need to shut down demigod, unplug their internet connection etc.

And lastly one debatable solution at least for custom games would be an ingame blacklist.

And using the "capitulate button" could make it impossible to put you on this blacklist.

Especially this would have noticable success.

I was on a game last week, I thought we were winning.  One player on the other team quit (I felt bad for them, because they were trying REALLY hard).  Then, I heard "Dard Angles; catapults; giants join the fight).  We ended up losing.  You CAN do comebacks in this game.  I just with the guy on the winning team got some kind of penalty for quitting.

It doesn't really matter when you're just as likely to lose all your favour playing normally.

this is true but mostly in games where everything is on the sunlight

i told already about few games that seemed miserably lost and we won

the point is that demigod has pretty complex strategies to decipher, even if too many deaths are a really big loss sometimes you can sacrifice some pure strenght to prevail in the end game and over all you cant know EXACTLY what the opponent spent money on

you can guess a bit if they bought on use items or some very powerful artifact but in general its too complicated at some point to understand who is gonna win

I almost never resigned when I played chess.  But I was playing with people who were amateurs -- my rating was around 1400 and I hardly ever played anyone whose rating was over 1800.  There was a real chance that the other guy would offer his Queen up on a platter, or if not the Queen, then at least a few pawns or a Bishop.  Or maybe I could catch him with a sneaky mate-in-5 combination.

Once you start talking about play at the expert level and above, though, the odds of that sort of blunder become vanishingly rare, and it would be not just impolite but insulting to keep playing when you clearly have no way to win -- you're basically saying "I bet you might still make a newbie mistake and hand me the game".

It's a GAME ... and many people have limited time available to play.

Personally, I very rarely quit* a DG match, but I do not feel resentment against people who leave before the end.

If a game appears to be doomed to be lost, it is the player's privilege, in a free society, especially in a game where the stakes are illusory, to get the hell out of Dodge and go spend his free leisure-time doing something else.

As some posters have suggested on this thread, some reward should be programmed to recompense winners who have been stuck with quitters ... [EDIT > and add, as someone suggests below, a "surrender" feature, allowing people to yield gracefully and at the same time assuring that the winners get a fair bonus to their stats.]

I don't get why so many people hate playing the underdog so much that they'd rather act like a little baby that doesn't get his way and quit, leaving this teammates (granted probably strangers) in even greater trouble to go sit in the lobby. I think I might enjoy playing a defensive match even more than one where I have the advantage. The best is probably a good, long balanced game though. Those almost never happens though. There is always some retard that decides to go cry to his mommy because someone took the flag he wanted, even though it was a good, balanced game.

so if 2 of 3 vote to surrender the winnen team still gets favor

also i leave when there is lag i will put up with it for a bit to see if it settles down but if its laggy i leave

Personally what I'd really like is some more stats kept on players and available when they join games.  If I could see number of games played next to average quit rate (number of games left early / total games played) then that'd make it pretty easy to set up the expectations prior to a game.

Just have the other clients who didn't quit report the quitter to the server.

The issue is that once you are behind there is no real way to come back. The whole problem stems from when a demigod dies. The extra gold and timeout gives the otherside such an advantage that its basically not worth playing.

The solution I propose is pretty radical - When a player dies they are out of the match. When all DGs on a side are dead the otherside wins.

This would quickly stop all the players that keep dying on towers and giving gold to the opposition. It would also make the games alot quicker when players werent evenly matched.
