Unseen Bonuses

A couple questions.

After playing the game on levels I should not have been :p I noticed some of the enemy ships had attack and defence bonuses well beyond mine. The thing is that even with all the planet improvements(shipyads, etc..) mine did not match.
So seeing that there is no way to win unless you can compete in battle I restarted and choose as an ability the +50% hits and the +50% weapons. I though this would increase my att/def values but it did not. How does this rating affect you?

It seems like attacking with a group of ships doesn't really matter. If there is one bad boy enemy I will try and hit him with four or five ships and just lose my whole little fleet.
Is this the case or am I not seeing something?

(a) you should see your bonuses having effect
(b) currently fleet bonuses only apply when defending AFAIK - attacking is always a single vessel thing
(c) yr enemy is probably mining military resources - make sure you find em and position yourself to take the starbase out in the first turn of the war (or buy the sb from them...)
(d) you might like to develop a SB on a military resource or two...

(a) Remember that bonuses are always rounded down, so they might not be that visible on the early ship classes.
(b) Is there a fleet bonus? I've never seen anything mentioned, so I thought the computer just picks the best ship to defend whenever your fleet is attacked.

Pen,

Gert is right. Your bonuses must exceed a whole number (integer value) to appear.

Thus, for an Overlord (AF=20), a 10% weapons bonus is enough to post a +2 AF (total AF=22).

However, for a Scout (AF=1), the weapons bonus must equal or exceed 100%!(1x.9, rounded down, = +0, for a total AF of still 1).

The AI apparently picks the highest DF ship in a stack to defend with. If all of your ships are substantially outclassed by this vessel, you will lose every attack and inflict minimal damage, no matter what else is present there.

The solution is to wait for the AI to move. It will frequently split slower-moving ships out of a stack, allowing you to cherry-pick which ones to attack in the following turns.

Fleet bonuses when defending are new to 1.04.something.
I don;t know if you have to actually be in a fleet, or get the bonus from being in the same square, nor do I have any idea how much the bonus affects, (Nor how to figure any of it out.)
