Multiple Stars Graphics Mod v0.3 [Updated 2/15/11]

[Vanilla Sins v1.191+, Entrenchment v1.051+, Diplomacy v1.011+]

-DESCRIPTION:
This graphics mod simply removes the spiral galaxy animation which appears when zoomed out on multiple star maps. It replaces the animation with a single solitary star. This is not only more realistic, but it is also reduces the load on system resources when playing maps which contain many star systems. More than that however, it eliminates the 'glowing white globs of death' that can occur on maps with over fifteen star systems. Also included is a reduction in generic planet icons when zoomed out which saves screen space when many star systems are present. Since this is a graphics mod it will not affect multi-player matches. Everything will work fine and there will not be any problems.

-HOW TO INSTALL:

Ok-- had the issue a few days ago where I got a minidump if I put MSGM on top of TSOP and if I put TSOP on top of MSGM, it overwrites it.  Posted here by request.  Use this mod all the time and TSOP.

Are you using the beta files or the pre-beta version? I'm also asuming you are using TSOP with all the little addons for multiplayer installed as well? This will help in testing when I hopefully get an opportunity this weekend to figure out what's up. I have an idea of what the problem is but I won't know for sure until I get a chance to sit down for an hour or so and double-check everything so that there aren't any other issues.

I'm looking into compatibility issues that have arisen with the Distant Stars mod as well as the TSOP mod now that v1.2 is out for Trinity / Diplomacy. I'll have an update soon and I am hoping to have a revised version available by Sunday evening. I'll keep everyone posted on the progress as I have more.

Multiple Stars Graphics Mod v0.3 - Standard works with Version 1.2 Vanilla Sins absolutely as intended. Galaxy animations disapear and planets have been shrunk down once the mod is enabled.

Now on to test with the latest DS build and hopefully will have a concrete beta build of TSOP to finalize testing with that mod as well.

So I have found the issue with the MSGM not being 100% compliant with the DS mod.

Currently the DS mod is still utilizing the v0.2 version of MSGM. When v0.3 is overlaid it overrights everthing correctly, however the Icons_planets.dds v0.3 (TSOP Compliant version) is not properly setup to work with DS. It is inccorectly referencing sections of the Icons file and that is what is creating this problem. Below is a screen shot of what you can expect when you implement MSGM v0.3 over the latest DS build. This will be fixed, compiled and uploaded Thursday (3/24/11) for implementation with the DS mod.

A duplicate message has been posted over on the DS thread.

THIS WILL BE FIXED!

Multiple Stars Graphics Mod - v0.3 Distant Stars Compliant has now been uploaded and released. This should solve any issues with compatibility with the DS mod.

Concerning the TSOP mod work will begin when a new version of the project has been compiled and released. I will post updates as I have them.

Friendly BUMP!

Friendly BUMP! This mod works with all current known versions of the game. As a reiteration it is a graphics mod and so it can be used in online multi-player game play with others that do not have it.

Later this weekend I'll have a MSGM - Slim version up that is guaranteed to work with any mod other than just stock vanilla.

When you get your slim version going let me know, I'll put it in the Directory...

I'm doing a few items of testing and should have it up tonight.

Boshimi did you ever get an updated version of this mod?

I don't know if this mod is dead or not but if an update could be done for rebellion that would be awesome. I went through the files to try and do it myself but couldn't figure out what was wrong. All that really happens is that the black holes, pulsars, and neutron stars seem like they don't know what texture to use and put up some odd one. only happens zoomed out and the mod still fully functions as intended. would just be nice if it worked for the non-standard stars as well.

You mean how they look like blue stars when zoomed out? This appears to be a bug with the Stellar Phenomenon DLC, for whatever reason the devs forgot to make zoomed out icons for those stars. That problem is totally different than the problem this mod addresses.

Not exactly. when i mouse over the star itself the pop up bottom right has the wrong icon. also the texture itself will be something random like a gas giant or something. it still works correctly zoomed all the way out. When zoomed in i get the correct star. its when i start zooming out i get the odd overlay on the star itself. ill screen shot when i can to illustrate.

This has not been updated for Rebellion you are correct. To be honest I'd have to dig back into it again to see what it was what I did. I think it might have been taking one of the dark star .dds files and renaming it for the spiral .dds files. As for the random texture issues that is because the texture sheet in this mod does not include any of the new textures from Rebellion or its expansions. What I did was take the texture sheet for use of all planetary zoom levels (the icons that show up on the map) and find the one for the zoomed out planets (the one that looks like a little colored pearl near the bottom of the texture sheet) and shrunk that portion of the image by 50%-75%.

If you use the incorrect texture sheet (pre-rebellion in place of the rebellion one), then the coordinates on the texture is is looking for will be pulling not just incorrect planets, but the wrong part of the texture. So a good example is normally Rebellion for a zoomed out planet would pull an image from x: 25, y:30 with 5 units for the bounds, well, if you use the wrong texture sheet, what is in those coordinates likely will be something entirely different as the source textures are from an older version of the game.  Hopefully that makes some sense.

These two changes together ensured that when zoomed out, your planet bubbles (pearls, whatever they are called) wouldn't occlude the rest of the map while at the same time, removing the spiral galaxy animation which on large multiple star maps makes it hard to see what is going on when zoomed out.

Hopefully this all makes sense. I might have some time to whip something up for rebellion so that it is supported but I have been very busy and in ill health.

Thanks for looking into this Marisareneth, I hope I've explained some aspects of what I've tried to do (portions texture sheets can be resized with GIMP if needed, I think that's what I used), and hopefully I can get to them here before to long and officially update the files.

GoaFan77, does what I said make sense?

Okay that makes sense. I can see how i'm getting the textures I am because of the coordinate system. I will see if I can figure it out. Hope you get feeling better and good luck if you attempt an update. I would be greatly appreciated.
