Demigod needs a forest style 'real world location' map.

I like the demigod maps, and i understand where they fit within the whole 'theme' of the game and all, but i swear this game would be ten times better if the maps were 'grounded' in real world locations with a bit of diversity to them. If you took away the 3d backgrounds, the maps themselves would be very very bland.

I would take the designs of the maps and incorporate them into a ground location. Add things around the maps, ruins, buildings, trees, rivers, lakes - they dont have to have any impact but would add so much to the asthetics.

Think a demigod version of the DOTA map - that would be so damned awesome. I don't mean THE DoTA map, but think how the DOTA map is setout - rivers, trees etc - apply that to Demigod and you see my point.

Environments such as desert egyptian style ruins, ancient greek ruins type settings, you name it.

Expansion perhaps?

or giv us a map editor :P

I'd also like to see a castled city map. ;)

Agreed. As long as it doesn't raise system requirements to the skies, some 'real' environments would be cool. Clean spirit worlds are nice in their own way, but I can imagine Rook towering above trees, and it looks just great :)

Maps could also be more complex. Places to hide form line of sight would be nice. I assume the game engine wouldn't have any problems with them?

that's also what i have in mind. where skill affects the environment like rook walking on the forest destroying all the trees LOL. or torch bearer changing the river to ice...cool!

but yeah sys requirements should be the same, i haven't upgraded yet, still running this on the lowest settings...ouch!

HunterV has a good idea,, having a map editor would help alot and give the game some kind of hybrid game play uknow . there will always be new maps like that and it would be repetitive

Great idea, but from our understanding during the beta process there are a few problems.  From what I recall, the supreme commander engine which demigod is based on, does not know how to take into account foliage in line of sight or ranged fire.  This is my understandingh of why we don't see maps like this.

I think my favourite map at the moment is the 3v3 with all the waterfalls etc. I'd love to see a map that appears part of the 'ground' and yeah was made to look like an actual real-world type environment. I don't really care about line of sight type things(though this would be good), more about the asthetics. It certainly makes the gameplay more enjoyable if what you're looking at is eye-candy opposed to an eyesore

As a purely aesthetic factor, I do agree with this idea, but if it were to have an impact on line of site (like the trees and landscape in dota), I would have to disagree...

@trigeminal

you're saying there's no "Higher Ground" thing? hmmm...WTH So that's the reason why all of the maps are so boring LOL. But yeah, background looks good, i like the "BROTHERS" map anyway. But it's way cooler if you can step on those skulls and unleash hell there...

i think its still better to have a more diverse map than those boring plain maps LOL. and how about a 1vs1 or 2vs2 maps ^_^

Forest? Sure, if it has giant heads or animals or something in the background.  A quasi real world or "real world messed up by the gods for their fighting" thing would be fine.  But I don't want to see the dota map in here myself ;)

yeah the key point to bring this game to the skies is having a map editor.. that alone would OWN dota, the map layout has been the same since forever with minor changes

Yellow brick road was so 1939. 2009 is all about the real world.

1vs1 or 2vs2 maps

yes.

Yeah i mean basically not like the current maps - raised above everything - but a man that looks like it's actually on the ground. Where in between the lanes(that now might look like roads/paths) there's trees and interesting stuff. Ground that's not all 100% raised brick type surfaces, perhaps a river running through it etc - but you can walk through the river. All eye-candy. It has such potential for an absolutely awesome map design imo. Not a clone of the DOTA map, but in that same style - except applied to well, demigod.

Can't.  Engine limitations.

To make a forest map fit in with the game, the solution is......

A big forest map on the back of a giant flying turtle :0.  That would be fun :)

It has to be flat though.

I'd like to see a floating islands map.

Like this but with multiple ones that have narrowish vine-bridges connecting them would be nice.  Could basically be flat.

The engine limitation is that things need to be flat..

only the playfield needs to be flat, the rest can be anything - also i doubt its an engine limitation, not sure why you are saying that.

A gameplay limitation I could understand, but not an engine limitation

is it possible to add those trees that it can block your vision if you're view is zoomed-out like bird's-eye view? or hmm how about using the trees (or stone whatever) as hiding place for ambush? that would be nice for team play...

It may need to be flat, but you can build the environment around the map to make it look non-flat. Like a river rolling through it doesnt neccessarily have to be on a different plane etc.

It's already hard, some say, to click on stuff behind the Rook, and now you want trees to be part of the map-design as well? This will further make it impossible to find anything you want behind all the leaves etc.

I'm not one of them, just to let you know.

It's an engine limitation having to do with ranged units.  The projectile physics system can't recognize three dimensions so an archer will auto-attack through a cliff/mountain.  For multi-tiered maps to work you'd need to take out the ranged units or make the levels far enough apart than a unit on one level could never be in range of a unit on another level.

I was thinking just this as well, at least the forest theme, I don't agree with the 'real world location' idea though. I like the idea that all the maps have been specially created by the gods just for this gladiatorial fighting. Maybe a place similar to a well manicured garden with paths or avenues, but also some wider open areas such as lawns for instance. But yeah, having some plant life would be a nice change from all the mosaic tiling about.
