Seeing through the friggin Rook

I had authored a thread by the same title back during the beta, but now that the game is out, I'd like to reiterate it.

Basically the theme of the thread is this, having the Rook or any other object in your way during a fight can be disasterous...Your Citadel or any other object, and a cluttered battlefield can be just as bad, I'd like to see though those things...perhaps everything betweeen the camera and the avatar is translucent, and perhaps on a cluttered battlefield your avatar would remain highlighted...or some sort of solution. Having to reposition the camera in a fight takes time I don't want to take.

Hmm the avatar remaining highlighted could be an option to give to people. not sure that would be to hard. But i havent found it to big of a problem for me? but i suppose i could see how it would be.

Yeah, I'd have to say I've had some epic battles where I've lost track of where key people are in the fray.

This is a frustrating problem when you are actually playing rook because when you are targetting say, hammer slam, the red outlines of enemies behind you no longer show. I have been killed many times just because enemy DGs warped in at my feet and I couldn't see em until it was too late.

I tend to think of Regulus and smaller Demis as having an advantage in being able to hide among the mobs.

Thats a very good point. Perhaps maybe a key to highlight things (think diablo item highlights) where you can hold control key to highlight enemy generals, shift key to highlight minions (to make mulch easier in the thick of battle) and while those keys are held you can only target the highlighted units.

One thing I've thought would be nice would be if floating and targetable boxes showing Demigod names and health appeared, with arrows attached that showed where the demigods were (to avoid clutter, maybe they would only appear for demigods near the camera, or maybe you could use a hotkey to enable a box for a particular demigod).  Obviously that's a fairly tricky thing to implement, though -- I don't expect anything that fancy anytime soon!

ive never really had a prob with this, using the camera alot helps, though i do know what u mean, the camera does help the situation, sometimes just rotating so u are looking at map from opposite direction helps a ton. i also zoom in real close if need be too

Maybe using the minimap...or something.

Like Kitkun said. Rook is big, like, Big, it makes sense smaller things just get lost in it's shadow. Just played my first few games with Rook, and it was a powertrip. I didn't get as many kills as with Regulus or such, but just.. creeps get lost beneath Rook, they just die without Rook even noticing. I even accidentally killed a player with Hammer Slam, didn't even notice he was there (there were giants and such around).

I didn't really have any big problem with Rook's size though. If a player is hidden behind Rook when I target Hammer Slam, it will also hit.

Aside from Rook though, targetting smaller characters in a crowd is annoying. Especially having trouble targetting my own demigod is stupid, why can't I just target the big picture. Or even better, cast on self with a key modifier. It's not that bad if I can't target other demigods so easily, I imagine it might be hard to target somebody during battle in a crowd. But my own character?

Yea i'm too used to the WC3 mechanics where you could target an ability at urself by clicking it on your portrait and i attempt to do that, but realizing that it doesn't do anything... So i have to frantically click it on my demigod before its too late. Also wish that i could actually use the minimap to quickly target an area, or even ping the map...

If they'd implement an option to show constant healthbars over all demigods that can be hovered over with target priority over anything else that is infront of it, problem would be solved.

why do you need ot target yourself?  you're always selected.

HaunterV, you're actually not always selected, if you've ever played a general its a very important part of macro that you're able to not have your hero selected.

I would like to see demigods better.  In a big fray, late game, things blend together and its very hard to discern friend from foe.  Demigods need to be larger but also either outlined in team colors or palleted to stand out better. This obviously wasn't considered when the game was being tested.

Being able to hold down a button to go into a view where all DGs are glowing would be great.  Think Diablo 2 item-view.

meh something could be done. in coh theres a color fill type option when your units are behind solid objects. Maybe while playing the Rook gpg/stardock could add in an option to have other creatures/players use that color fill when the game detects your toon or toons are blocking the view of an opponent.

I myself love the rook though, that huge hammer flying around is just top notch. all he needs is a cape and some stuff flying around his head like king kong *_*

Oh, well for this tournament I'm just focussing on UB so my experience with Using a general is limited to Erebus for the duration of one SP tournament.... Next Epoch I'll try another DG and so on and so on... so 7-9 epochs from now I'll at least have some ability with each DG.

So how does thee game know when you want to target the rook instead of the people behind him?  This makes no sense.

Hold alt to rotate camera.

Yeah, I can never find that darn Demis anywhere on the battlefield. But isn't that just the name of the game?

You should always be able to see everything in a little ring around your character. No matter if a building or Rook isstanding on top of you. How this should work...ask the engineers. I just play :)

It's not a programming problem, really, but an artistic one.  Proper palleting it seems was simply not considered.  Take a look at TF2 -- Valve went through great pains so you could tell in less than a second whether a person was on your team as well as what class they are!  Team colors sharply contrast and the shapes of each class are as different as possible.

In demigod?  Not so much.  Late game, there are even demigods that get lost among common creeps!  That is not okay.  You also need to be able to easily discern minions from reinforcements, which REALLY wasn't considered.  All heroes need to have much stronger coloring so they're more noticable.  Right now its like everyones wearing black to a goth concert.

What ZephyrTR said. I think there's a lot they didn't consider when they built the game tbh.

Heh. If they did give the demigods a growth-spurt (unlikely, but humourous) how would they explain it?

But I hate losing my demigod, and it happens far too much. I believe it's intended, however, so Giants give a 'oh ----' response. Otherwise, it'd just be another minion, not something with a huge-ass club the size of your demigod beating you on the head (Rook excluded of course. Though that would be awesome. THE FORCES OF DARKNESS HAVE CONSTRUCTED THE ROOK-GIANT!)

Well maybe if all the demigods' portraits appeared somewhere on screen (i'm thinking to the right side of the screen ) when they get in your line of sight. Like if you were farming grunts somewhere, there are no portraits, but as soon as a demigod came out of the fog of war and into your line of sight his portrait will appear on the right side (with red or green backgrounds, so you can tell the difference between an ally and enemy ). As more demigods come near you, the portraits will stack on themselves. When you want to target a specific demigod you can select your power and then click directly on their portraits.

This does not solve the "targeting the minion" problem, but I think it prevents demigods hiding behind rooks, citadels, in clusters of grunts etc.
