Will Wright leaving EA

As the title says, Will Wright is leaving EA:

The article also says that this is in part due to budget cuts at EA. Hopefully it is true that EA is losing money, as it would do us all a favor.

Pretty sure that was just SimCity Soceties... which was so awful they had to create a bundle pack witht he older Simcity 4 to sell it.

Soooo, that's what i saw in a bargain bin at BestBuy for $25 three weeks ago.

Lucky me, i had some other priorities like a Bamboo tablet that included, PhotoshopElements-6 & CorelPainterEssentials-4 as TRUE invaluable bonuses.

I'm heaven since.

That's his late work, which some of us think of as a real disappointment in comparison to his pre-EA goals. But maybe the real taste thing for you is that his focus was never on competitive games, but more on really wild software toys.

RE Spore sales: this analyst believes that it will take EA five years --and a bunch of expansion packs -- to recover their investment in Spore.

It says internal estimates, not the analysts estimates.  Even if that is true, the game will make money in the long run.

Can't say I'm surprised.  I always got the impression Wright wanted a lot more freedom but the money men kept him on a short chain pumping out more Sims expansions.  I guess the Spore debacle brought things to a head.  Sounds like the new company is basically a think tank and he'll still be under EA's thumb when it comes to actually creating a product, but maybe he can avoid some of the executive interference in the future if he's outside the system so to speak.

There are might be a lot of reasons why he left EA, but so far he hasn't really made any of them clear; and since he is still working alongside EA with this new (well, not really new) company he probably won't say anything negative regarding EA. So far we know about his concerned budget cuts, and he probably wants to guarantee freedom, or just not work on another Sims game. :P

If you think about it, SimCity Societies was really dumbed down (compaired to SimCity) just like the Alpha of Spore was dumbed down.  I wonder if someone purple and dinasourish has a lot of stock in EA . . . ? "What's the matter Timmy, did that nasty o'l Spore Apha game make you think a little?  Well, uncle Barney will just have a special friendship talke with those nasty EA peoples".
