Do Fleet Attack/Defense bonus components work?

I am playing the Krynn and the Righteous Fleet Defense ship component (+30% defense) doesn't seem to have any impact on my fleet.  I combined 3 ships with an individual defense of 1/3/1, and all I get is 3/9/3 total fleet defense, no additional 30% bonus at all.  Does the defense component only work if the individual piece of defense is 4 or more (30% of 4 to get bonus of 1 defense)?

Also there seems to be an oversight for the tech Duranthium III.  After researching this tech, you get the benefit of 2 pieces of armour: Duranthium Armour III and Superior Duranthium.  The only problem is both of these pieces of armour have EXACTLY the same cost and size, but Superior Duranthium has a higher defense 3 (Duranthium III only has defense 2).  Why would anybody use Duranthium III if Superior Duranthium has higher defense and with no drawbacks at all?  There must be a missing tech or Superior Duranthium is placed at the wrong tech.

All things are truncated, so 1/3/1 defense with +30% would be 1.3/3.9/1.3, which would still be 1/3/1. It should show up once you pass 4 in any type of defense. 1/4/1 would get the bonus value of 1/5/1.

That makes components that give 10% bonus attack almost useless.  If I can get a single ship with 10 attack, it is not even worth it to get the extra 1 attack (considering the research & extra cost).

Until endgame, yes.

Defense boost components are actually more valuable, since you can create a tank ship now.

However, although the components themselves aren't that useful til endgame, on the other side of the coin, the increase in firepower does not cause an increase in your military might, which has an effect on your score as well as exactly how strong the AI perceives you to be.

Ok, I thought the purpose of adding these fleet components in TA is to make fleets somewhat more useful with the new combat mechanics.  Now, it seems like it's just an enhancement.

At higher tech, they are quite useful. It's only at low to mid-level tech you are better off with weapons instead of a module. Hell, on large or huge hulls they are worthwhile on individual ships - 6 nightmare torpedo and a killzone computer is smaller than 9 torpedos. That doesn't help you outside your influence, but it's great if you're winning the influence war.

So far I have managed to win my games on Large maps, Tough difficulty, 9 opponents with only Lasers/Railguns/Stingers.  So haven't really seen the need for the components.  Maybe I need to up the difficulty to Crippling.

it doesn't really come into play until you get immense with 8+ opponents and all manner of events.

These components are actually quite useful in a close game.  It is definitely worthwhile, although it certainly increases your micromanagement.

Some approaches:  (I can't fine the "Cheesy fleet tactics post", which explains most of this in detail.)

If its a fleet defense bonus or fleet attack bonus module (Tulon, Vengeance), you can put it on a small or medium ship with no weapons, in which case it will be attacked last.

You can make a "tank" by loading a large ship with a single weapon, lots of defense, and one of these modules. (One per ship)   This ship will usually (but not always) draw fire, so your other ships could have lower defense and higher offense.  If you have a small but powerful ship  (Psyonic Beams), I have seen this draw fire away from the tank ship.  I am not sure of the A.I. criteria here.

The other modules are individual ship bonuses in your own influence (4 different modules available).  The attack value of you ship will actually change when you leave and reenter your own influence.

This can all get a little overwhelming, so be sure to use rally points to bring these ships together.  Also, get your logistics up to accomodate these ships in your fleet.

They work, but the size and maintenence is worse than just adding more deffence which is probably more effective anyway.  sheeshe!
