Banned because I never really got the point of marriage. Ok, so if you're attracted to someone enough to seriously want to spend the rest of your life with them (which I imagine is much more freakishly rare than American society makes it out to be), then do it. But why we need the whole rest of society to put some kind of special legal seal on it? Shouldn't the relationship itself be enough? And if it isn't enough, then why are you doing it in the first place?

Banned for not explaining to Scout that marriage was a concept put forth in the early days of man for women to make sure they and their children were taken care of in a society run by men where women were seen as lessers and had no rights, not even the right to have an income.  They achieved this by making the point: "No band on the hand, no nookie for cookie." perfectly clear.  This concept worked well up until about the end of the second world war where women's rights had given them fair protections in society, and Rosie the Riveter and Wendy the Welder proved that they could do the same work and it became an acceptable practice to hire women instead of men.  They now have all of the same rights as men in most societies, earn income, own property, and direct society itself.

So to us, marriage is kind of a silly formality of life rather then the necessity it once was.

All I'll say is the actual act of having a wedding is utterly pointless.  All you need is agreement between two people that you will stay together.  Marriage is a trap designed to force two people to try to work things out when times get rough and they need to back off from eachother.  It just causes unecesary stress that leads to eventual divorce in most cases where this is relevant.  (A lot of marriages work, and I'm not against two people being boned for life, I'm against all the other people who want to stick their noses in something that involves a man and a woman, two men, or two women.)

On a side not, I'm not against bigamy either, so long as all those involved know about eachother, and agree.
