Draak: Interesting point. I've been trying to get more acquainted with Eastern philosophy lately, but had started with the Chinese, not Indians/Hindus.
Xer: Basically, it amounts to the same thing. The most plausible way for the USSR to become freakishly aggressive at the end is either Gorbichev pulling to the right (or left? it's hard to say with the Soviets) to appease the hard-liners who eventually started the big coup at the end, or having that coup be much more successful and putting the hard-liners in complete control for a longer time.
