Confusion: What can I actually use?

Shame there's no simple sticky stating what works with what...

OK, so I just got myself fully patched to SoaSE latest 1.16 via Impulse.

I really wanted to run either of MadScientist & 7DS.  From (confusing) what I read below, am I right in stating:

* MadScientist (2.2?) only runs for Entrenchment (I don't have) --- there might have been a version for 1.16, but it's disappeared?

* 7DS only runs for 1.05, says it doesn't run above that, and I've carefully patched to 1.16 so I can't?

So a total waste of time for me, who is really looking for gameplay-compexity Mods?  Sigh....

I only just bought the game!

Now I immediately need to buy the expansion, because I'm either patched too much (why did i bother..) or nobody has kept a version of another mod around for SoaSE?

try starfall, it´s (sadly) vanilla sins only atm.

You are correct in that statement, although there is a way to get back to 1.05 to play 7DS, if you don't mind some extra work (although I think it only works if you have the boxed version of Sins).

  1. Uninstall Sins
  2. Reinstall off the disc to get Sins 1.0
  3. Search online for the 1.05 patch, you should be able to find available for download somewhere, and then install it
  4. Copy the entire Sins folder somewhere else and rename it.
  5. Use Impulse to update the original to 1.16.

If you do that correctly, you shoule be able to play both 1.16, and 1.05. When you want to use 1.05, go into your copied folder and run Sins out of it. However, when you switch between versions, it will likely erase your user settings, so you will have to reset those.

@ollibert: TY.  I might give yours a try, but you need to update that thread to give us the new link on whatever "Since FileFront is closing i will be uploading it to Nakido tonight" means?

@kyogre12: TY for clear explanation. When you say "5. Use Impulse to update the original to 1.16.", would that mean go through the entire 250Mb download I had to do for that (slow Internet connection) to get it again, because Impulse procedure doesn't let me just save the patch to disk??

I wonder if I could do it the other way round: my SoaSE is currently Impulse-patched to 1.16, I have original (boxed) disc plus 1.05 downloaded from somewhere; can I, like, copy current 1.16 somewhere, uninstall/reinstall from disc + 1.05 patch, copy elsewhere, restore copied 1.16, and keep Impulse happy I'm at 1.16?

Meanwhile, I only play vs AI, with any of these mods does the comp really know how to play (decently) with changes or do I really need to stick to non-modded if I expect AI to cope?

That should work, although I can't say I've tried it myself.

As for the AI, it works for the most part in 7ds. There are a couple races (Arilou and Rogue) that have more unique play styles, to the AI doesn't perform incredibly well, but the other races it can handle fine. The Arilou don't actually build ships, and just have them spawn form other ships, and the Rogue have to research a certain ship (the LHD) before they can colonize, both of which the AI has problems with.

Thanks again for further clarification, kyogre12. I'll give you some karma :) [Edit: Or I would if I could figure, clicking on your karma doesn't seem to let me add?]

I don't mean to belabour the point, but your reply shows me, I would have put AI opponents on "random race", and that would not have been good for those 2 races.  Which just goes to show, I know people can mod these games, but you have to be careful playing them for AI-not-understanding-mods issues, which is a pain.

Do you agree with the original replier, who recommended me to get Entrenchment for AI challenge?  Coz I have to say, at vanilla (Normal AI) I seem to be walking all over AI, and I am usually rubbish at these games!  I do know I will have to try jacking AI level up at vanilla, but it really bugs me when you have to play these games giving AI unfair advantages to make them competitive, then it's "of course I'm losing coz the AI has more ships/whatever than me" :-(  Anyone want to compete against computer chess with AI having more pieces or 2 moves to 1?  I want the AI to play decently without having to unbalance the game.

You can give karma by clicking the little thumbs up button below a person's post.

About the AI, keep in mind that there are 11 races (including the vanilla ones) in 7ds, so there is a pretty good chance that you won't see one or both of the races with AI problems. Also, the AI will eventually start to colonize/build fleets if you give them some time to do so. We also have a hamachi network for online multiplayer, and you can find more info on that on our forums: http://www.sri-corp.com/

Personally, I would recommend Entrenchment just because of all the stuff it adds, although the more challenging AI is also nice. As far as I know, the vanilla Hard AI doesn't cheat, and is just harder. I could be wrong, but I think that only the Unfair AI gets bonuses.
