The AIG Drama

I have been watching this nonsense unfold all day, and it has been really funny in some ways.  All this fake outrage started when people saw that AIG executives received bonuses that were contractually owed to them, and allowed in Obama’s “stimulus” plan.  The White House won’t give specifics on how or when exactly Obama learned about these  bonuses, but today’s “outrage” looks pretty staged to me.

All day we have politicians, mostly democrats, say some outrageous things like the AIG executives should commit suicide because of what they did.  Wow.  I mean, they seem to go out of their way demanding justice and trials for islamic terrorists, but an American business executive doesn’t even get that.  Talk about screwed up priorities.  And it wouldn’t be complete without Chuck Schumer going on about taxing them 100%, which is what they want to do to income anyways, so what’s really the issue here?

This all really comes down to one thing.  This is what happens when government gets involved in bailouts and other nonsense as they have been doing.  This won’t be the last of it either, expect more of this, and expect democrats to use it as an excuse to put even more restrictions on businesses, whether they received bailout money or not.

Obama shouldn’t be outraged either.  I mean he received over $100,000 in bonuses, I mean political buyouts during the campaign.  Will he be taxed 100%?  Will he return the money?  Of course not, who will dare question Obama and his associations?

Maybe if they'd been competant and moral and done their job right in the first place the government wouldn't hafta get involved.

As I said, fake outrage:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Cue the outrage. For months, the Obama administration and members of Congress have known that insurance giant AIG was getting ready to pay huge bonuses while living off government bailouts. It wasn't until the money was flowing and news was trickling out to the public that official Washington rose up in anger and vowed to yank the money back.

Why the sudden furor, just weeks after Barack Obama's team paid out $30 billion in additional aid to the company? So far, the administration has been unable to match its actions to Obama's tough rhetoric on executive compensation. And Congress has been unable or unwilling to restrict bonuses for bailout recipients, despite some lawmakers' repeated efforts to do so.

If i recall correctly the same guy who put this in the bill (to ok the bonuses) is now trying to change it or something like that. This is definitely change, we changed on set of idiots for another.

I'm sitting here now listening to Dodd tap-dancing about the bonus provision he wrote.  Yesterday, he didn't know who put the date in the language or how, only that it happened 'in reconciliation.'  Today, he casually said that 'Treasury staff came to us' with concerns about the potential for a 'flood of lawsuits' and asked him to put the date in, so he did.  Then he has the nerve to say that because the White House is now using the 'public interest' part of the legislation to go after the bonuses, it's doing exactly what he intended the legislation to do in the first place.

Alice, this Wonderland is a way cool place.

had it been worded:

"politicians say some outrageous things like the AIG executives should commit suicide"

i'd have no quibble.

qualifying those politicians who "say some outrageous things like the AIG executives should commit suicide" as "mostly democrats" when, in fact, those outrageous things were said by a republican senator is about as straightforward as astrazeneca suggtesting seroquel helps patients shed pounds.

People with science degrees, mostly those named Daiwa, don't get what "twisting words" means.

daiwa and i don't often agree (which is kinda funny considering it's highly likely each of us considers himself both adherent and guardian of the au h20 legacy).  i do sincerely appreciate his intelligence, tenacity, excellent sense of humor, rationality, innate skepticism and, not last nor least, his admirably gracious demeanor.

Long as you pop in to Artysim's 'A Republican Speaks' article to make the same point.  ;)

I enjoy my role as straight man (and professional hairsplitter) for kb, but I don't consider myself 'guardian' of much.

Thanks for those kind words, kb - right back at ya.

And, yes - the odometer just turned past 10,400 (I have a short commute).

Apparently cyberspace mimics reality.

This post deteriorated down to the semantics of who threatened who. The same distortion and distractions the government is using now. The fathers of this AIG bailout abortion, clearly left out/removed the wording to stop these bonus, which were implemented long ago. Apparently this steaming pile is right off of Chris Dodd's plate. It doesn't take a bloodhound to follow the trail home. They can jump up and down all they want and cry foul of AIG's actions, but that's like arresting the junkie and giving the pusher a free pass.

The Democrat's bait and switch tactic is being over used and people are getting keen on it.

ID,

While I share your sentiments regarding the AIG drama.  It seems to me that this false outrage is more of a distraction to the real issue.  Dodd knew what he was doing, plain and simple.

I'm not a Glen Beck fan but he did present some interesting informaton.  According to a recent TV show he broke down the delegation of funds that were filtered through AIG.  What I find remarkable is only about 1/3 (around $50Bill) actually went to AIG.  How come there isn't outrage over the $100+bill that was distributed oversees and other countries (ie banks in France) and other US companies (ie. Bank of America).

Let's not overlook that Dodd also receives a good chunk of money during elections (I forget the amount).
