Editing a dream...

I have been searching around the net for the past week looking for a way to edit a .dream file.

Specifically I want to make a dream run longer.

I do not want to reencode the dream, just edit the framerate so that it runs longer.

Does anyone know of a way to...

  Decode .dream files

  Edit .dream frame rates

  Edit .dream run lengths

Knowing MS .dream files probably cannot be edited in any way...

I would really like to edit a dream I downloaded though.

MS dreamscene files are simple video files (usually wmv). Dreams are either one or more video files (plus a xml file for triggered dreams) or a pair of dlls (for dynamic dreams).

Dream files are "encrypted" so you cannot edit them directly. What you can do though is get the extracted video file, modify it and then create a new .dream file from it (or just use the video file through DreamScene if you have Vista Ultimate).

Here is how to do it:

  1. Apply the dream (this will extract the video)
  2. Navigate to %ProgramData%\Stardock\DeskScapes\ExtractedData
  3. There should be a folder named after the Dream (with numbers and letters after it)
  4. Inside this folder, you should see a video file (wmv or mpeg). If there is two .dll files and a bunch of other file, this is a dynamic dream. You cannot edit it directly, but you can try to record it with this little tool and then edit the video.
  5. Copy the video file and make the modifications you want to it.
  6. Create a new dream file using your modified video file (there is a tutorial and a lot of other forum threads on how to do it)

Remember that the original dream and video are probably copyrighted so you cannot redistribute your modifications without the original author approval. If it's only for your own personal use, it's perfectly fine though.

.dream files are a Stardock format, not Microsoft.

You could probably just contact the maker of the .dream files and ask them for the original video in order to make your own version.  As long as it's not a master dream they're selling, most will probably be willing to oblige

If it's a video dream, editing the frame rate wont make the dream run longer. The only way to lengthen a dream is to stretch it out over a longer period of time which slows the motion down.  This will also make it appear to skip between frames if it is not done with a frame blending.

If it's one of my dreams, private message me and I'll see what I can do for you.
