DesktopX help

Where does one go??

I"ve recently started into the scripting game of DesktopX. I liked it so much, I bought the company. Not really, but I did see a very good use for it in the company I work for so I persuaded them to spring for the Professional version. I've learned quite a bit by looking at other things that people have done. Howerver, there seems to be one thing lacking, and maybe I just haven't found it.

A developer "community" for lack of a better term. I know stardock central has the chat feature, however I sit behind a corportate firewall that blocks that port. I have snuck on the other side to get some quick info, but once the discussion is over it's gone. Never to help anyone else having the same probelm. I've posted some stuff on the wincustomize message board help section but those posts seem to elicite very little response (I had two problems and neither got any response, except my own. Only one was a desktopX issue and it is being addressed, see comment below). I once found a forum that looked like what I needed, http://joedoug.com/dxforums/, but it now shows this "Sorry, but this board is currently unavailable. Please try again later."

Don't get me wrong, I did/do have a current issue that I'm in communication with the good people at stardock and they are on top of it, and I'm not complaining about the lack of support. I would like to find a place where developers can post a question or look for a current problem that has already been answered. I dunno, maybe it's just me and the nature of development doesn't lend itself to this kind of interaction. Maybe it's better to have the how-to articles (which are very helpful) and try to adjust them to my need. But where does one go when they have any issues?

Sorry to ramble on about this but I don't want to seem like I'm complaining about anything, I was just curious if I missed something on any kind of user-to-user interaction.

My Wife uses Macs, and I have supported them since 1990 until about 3 years ago, so I am way out of practice now.  But They have come through for me when my wife had problems.

Also check out macattorney.com.  The guy that runs that site is randy Singer and he wrote the Mac Bibles!  So he is really sharp!

Hopefully one of the administrators here at WinCustomize will drop in and see your posting. I know some of the messageboards and other stuff is still being brought over from the old website, and its not easy to find thing right now. I've had a hard time with this myself. Good luck, I'll be searching along with you.

Thanks for the reply Dr. Guy. However, I'm not having issues with a mac, my post is about DesktopX.

Reppiks, I hope someone sees it also.

I think I'm going to scrap my use of DesktopX as a development tool. I'm to frustrated.

I have what seems to me to be little questions every now and then and I don't have an avenue to pursue an answer. I sit inside a corportate firewall that is pretty much locked down except for port 80. So stardock chat is not really an option for me, and I'm not going to fire off an email to stardock support . I feel that support is for the software itself, not for developing other things with it.

I've got some answers by looking at other people objects to see how they did. But that can only get a person so far. I see a great us for desktopX in the development of custom apps for specific customer/user needs. For instance I was working on an app that hooked up with a database and could tell each user if another user was logged into the network and display the phone number / extension. It's not earth shattering but in a big office where people can't remember the extension of everyone it was a fast on the desktop way to look it up. Howerver, for instance, I have a couple of questions on the use of the DesktopX Edit Control that I don't know where to ask them. Sure if someone actually reads this they might say, go ahead and ask it here in your blog or send my your question, which is great but wouldn't it make more sense to have a kind of Develper forum or something so more than one person could benifit from the question. And not to mention the poster would feel like these types of questions were welcome.

So I'll stop whining.

buck2bcr,
I haven't looked at them myself in a long time but I do know that Stardock had/has its own news server, and the newsgroups on it were pretty active last time I checked....
news.stardock.com.

most of the desktopX developers talk to each other via msn messenger.... When I was learning vbscript I used to im tiggz with questions or for feedback.

there are some really helpful people out there if you know where to look...

I know it's a shameless plug, but WSTaylor's Skinning.net forums has a DesktopX section with experienced DX programmers visiting and moderating the site
