Solar System and Game Events?

(Or What Is It Now?) :)

Hi,

Just had an idea, sitting on the porch, so had to come in and type it up. I was thinking you know, everything in the game is race driven, we do this, bad guys do that. Mostly. There is still artifacts and stuff like that. But what if there were planetary and solar system and game events that were randomized, or hit at various triggers?

Like:

A Sun going Nova!!   Oh My!!!!  and half my fleet was going through there when it lit up!!!

Black holes that become deadly, only sometimes, ships implode but only at certain times.

Ships anti-matter engines fail and the ship explodes!!  Perhaps this could be a chance to activate in the ability?

Maybe certain systems on a ship fail?  Oxygen? Anti-matter not recharging, Ship guns mis-firing? Navigational controls failing and the ship going out of control? Maybe insanity in the crew and they attack their own ships? (Sorta a dominate with out the icon change showing?)

Technology failure... ship manufacturing failing due to drop/stop in resources? Or equipment failures? Maybe the planet is High Industrial and the smoke/pollution/atmospheric debris accumulates to the point where the planet health is unviable and the cloud cover goes black and the planet dies?

Perhaps a rogue planetoid enters the system and oblierates a habited or un-inhabited planet?

Maybe a cloud of toxic waste from some other planet drifts through space and strangles another planet?

Maybe planets with indigenous life that fights back when attempting to colonize and the colonize fails?

Excessive solar radiation that leaks out from the star to surrounding planets for brief periods? Frying everything?

Or causing a slow decay in ships, production, weapon range or weapon strength?

These and whatever else we could think up could be scripted into the engine and not directly in the players control at all. Or the variable likelihood of these kinds of things happening could be put on a slider low to high to make for more "Environmental" things in the game affecting gameplay, not just the you know, us and the bad guys thing?

Anyway, just an idea, probably not gonna happen, haha, but if i worried about that, i wouldnt ever say anything.  :)

But i thought it could make for some very very interesting situations for the game. One i wouldn't mind playing for 8-10 hours just to see if i could pull a comeback after losing 2/3 of my fleet and planet resources in a Sunburst and still beat the bad guys.    :)

Random game events have been suggested since early beta.. at one point after launch a little birdie told me that IC was looking into the possibility of doing it, but then a bigger birdie told me we wouldn't see it for a very long time.

:(  Hmmm.... well... it was a nice idea.   :)  Keep trying though Annatar, they would probably listen to you.   :)

I was thinking if the devs could give us the ability to script, but then it occurred to me that maybe the engine would need to be scriptable, or moreso than now, and what kind of tools or rules or both might be necessary to use them?

Sounds like a lot of work, even if the devs didnt develop the content and left that to the modders. Still alot of work.

Anyway, just a thought,

It is a good idea. However, if you think about it, if a random event as such stated happened, ie: jimmy is in a middle of a great big battle, and BOOM! his home planet just explodes from a planet-killing asteroid! Just think how p'd off jimmy would be! XD

But still, it's a good idea.

I dont think that would be a good idea, specially a lot of the stuff you actually suggested. Its real time and your already dealing with a massive amont of shps defending a massive amount of territory, random eents would jsut make things more somplex than they need to be.

If you'd like a game with such events in it though I suggest checking out galactive civ 2 and one of its exansions, its got random events

Random events could be awesome....IF....you kept the the end results small.

Per example comet slams into your planet. Instead of losing your planet just like that. Make it kill a 1/3 of the population and 1/3 of the health of the planet. That way its it not a game ender if you get a bad roll and half your planets have a rogue roid slam into them.

Take the solar explosion idea you threw out there...Instead of losing your massive fleet to a bad roll. Make somelike like massive solar flares, drains antimatter and/or shields while in grav well. Think more along what we already have. Planets Bonuses. They can be good or bad, but not game ending either way.

To Ironclad, and Stardock

Screw the current plans for second expansion, this idea it self can be an expansion in itself

and for an extreme large map, multiple star system which will represent our galaxy, we already know so much about it already, well not really, so imigine :D

Annatar,

:(  Well... I guess its understandable, they have an idea and a budget to get them where they think most players are going to want to be. They cant run down every little silly idea i get just to say "There you go Teal"     :)

Haha, but it still would be nice. When i find Space Ponies!   Or when Flying Pig Fortresses are introduced into the game!! With aluminum laser sighting gauss rail guns in their eyes!  :)   I'm just being silly now, haha, anyway, thank you for the post back.

Sikauran, sesmet333, -Ue_Carbon,

Sorry it sounded game-ending, like you said, i expected it would wreck havoc, but not end the game, and i thought the errant comet would hit uninhabited planets 80 percent of the time, but like you said, a 1/3 reduction in resources and ships might be better than i had intended originally. And the half anti-matter and shields disappearing in a solar flare sounds very nice indeed. Not that i like the mayhem, its just i thought it would add some flavor and some unpredictability to the game. As for "real time" i'm not sure i understand, these would be scripted and embedded, just like perhaps artifacts with xx percent chance of happening, and certainly not all of them happening at once!!!  Of course i might want to do the all at once thing once, just for fun!!!  :)

Anyway, im glad some ppl like it, i didnt expect everyone would, its not everyone's cup of tea. But that is okie. I would love it as a mod, or even a "loadable" feature that ppl could use or not as they choose.

But until i can figure out programming and hack the engine myself, and build a scriptable tool to use it, haha, then i've little chance of actually seeing it.

Its more my over-active imagination wishing is all!!    :)

But it Would Be Cool, wouldn't it?   :)

oh Mooster, thank you for the flattery, haha, but i think what IronClad has is better than my little imaginary romps. They actually have to code all that stuff, and you and i get to play it! For Real!!   :)  But sometimes, the ideas still pop out when im playing the game and i start to think.... what if this...?    :)

Me too I love Planet Bonuses for this reason add some flavor and such. Scripts would be cool just as long as you kept them simple just like the current planet bonuses. Small changes that make it fun but dont really affect the game play.

If you find a way, I will be sure to try it out.
