Darn Shortcut Arrows Keep Reappearing

I only recently switched to Vista (Home Premium) from my old XP box. I have noticed something that happens when you switch icon packages in Vista that never happened in XP.....the shortcut arrow (that I prefer to remove from the desktop icons) reappears on every package change. I searched for this problem but didn't get any results. Is this happening to others, or just me? This is not a huge headache, but still a bit of an annoyance. Also, it places an ini file on the desktop (which I just delete). None of this happened in XP, only on Vista.

I am running IP v4.10.172

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Here's a 100% guaranteed foolproof and totally safe way of keeping the shortcut away - even with IconPackager active:
Open regedit (Start -> run -> type 'regedit')

Find "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT - lnkfile"
In the right pane you'll see this entry: "IsShortcut".
Rightclick it and select 'Rename'

I simply rename it to "IsShortcutNot" ;)

Close Regedit, reboot and viola - no more shortcut arrow - ever!! (Well... not untill it's changed back or Windows is reinstalled)

(Works in Windows 98/2000/XP/Vista/W7)

Snowman...thanks for the tip. It works on Explorer icons perfectly, but it leaves IE shortcuts unchanged (I know I am nitpicking here:omg: ).

I am curious if this happens to other Vista users using IP.

Same procedure above, just for 'InternetShortcut'

For whatever reason, it doesn't work for internet shortcuts.  I Googled and found others recommending this as well (so I know it must work), but it doesn't work for me. Maybe, thats why it appears that I am the only one having this problem with IP returning the arrows and the INI file to the desktop....strange!! One of life's little annoyances I guess I must live with:pout:

Thanks for the tip...one to keep.

It works for the desktop icons but the icons in the "Favorites Link" in Vista Explorer disappear.
