When an Empire dies ....

What happens to everything?

1) Population - stays where it was at the end

2) Buildings - stay where they were at the end

3) Ships - go various ways, depending on stuff, including random

4) Technology - does the empire to which the other surrendered get all the tech?  Some?

5) Spies - do they all disappear?  Why not defect in ways like the ships do?  Why not, for instance, randomly nullify or place themselves on empires' improvements analagous to ships going pirate?

6) BCs - does the empire getting the surrender get the treasury?  What if the losing empire was in debt?  Does it get that?

Pop stays the same.  Buildings stay the same so long as the civ they surrender to has the techs for the buildings.

Ships get split generally between allies, but if the surrendering race is evil the majority of them will become pirates.

The civ they surrender to does not get any techs from the surrender.

Spies die.  While that would be interesting, it'd probably be too complicated for its own good.

No, the empire that the race surrenders to does not get the treasury of the surrendering race.

"Buildings stay the same so long as the civ they surrender to has the techs for the buildings."

IIRC, I have invaded planets and found some buildings for which I did not have the tech.

Am I mis-remembering?  Or, is surrender treated differently in thegame engine than invasion?

There are a couple of buildings (I can't remember offhand, one's in the minor race tech tree, something to do with influence) that stay even though they shouldn't-my understanding of the reasoning behind this is that you can't actually get the prerequisite tech for it, but I haven't done that much testing with it.

Surrender is not treated differently from invasion in this context.  Obviously, population will not be the same with that method.

I sure seem to remember (this is DA) invading and finding Industrial Sectors and high level Research facilities.

I never research Industrial Sectors and do only the first Research step to get to Miniaturization.  I play All Factories.

Also, when a planet secedes and joins another Empire, their facilities come with them.  In my current game, I have had to "upgrade" out of existence many Invention Matrix facilities.  I also never research power plants, and all the planets that have come over by revolt have them, as well.

DA would be the reason.  The destruction of buildings that which you do not have the tech for is something that was put in for TA.

So, my original statement on buildings was correct (for DA).

Do any of the other answers change from DA to ToA?

The treasury or debt?

(BTW, I still think my "spies acting like ships" with some turning pirate would be cool.  Perhaps some could even flee with parts of the treasury to former allies.)

Nope, money and spies still don't change hands upon the destruction of a race in TA.

Spies are rounded up and executed.

I always thought that the race surrendered to should get the cash. But I guess the surrendering leader needs all that money to get away and reire comfortably somewhere.

Also, in DA you do get to keep structures you don't have the tech for but you will not be able to queue up any new ones until you get the tech.

In my last game i was neutral but wound up with the MCC, OSC and the free invasion structure from the Drengin; in TA i think I'd lose them. It was nice to get them and still have the Neutrality Learning Centers.. I guess thats a bonus with playing on a suicidal since I never saw an AI build any of those building in any other games.
