Effects of Military Starbases

I really never build military starbases, but in my last game i had tons of ships left over fot the mop up and decided to just lump them around a military starbase or 2. I was debating on whether I should keep certain ships in orbit for the 20% weapons boost or let them get the bonus from the starbase by launching them and sendingthem over. Then I noticed that the ships in orbit of the planets withinthe radius of influence of the starbase also got the bonus.

Is this normal?  I was always under the impression that ships in orbit didn't get the bonus.

Ships in orbit within the AOI get the bonus.  The problem is it's difficult to get them on planets close enough to be in the AOI of all of the military bases (whether you use 16 or 24).

Just as a note, the orbiting bonus is technically 25% to attack, although there is a hidden omnipresent bonus (in and out of orbit) to all ships of 1% defense and 1% attack, which stacks additively with the above.  So if you had a ship in orbit, but not within the AOI, with 4 nightmare torpedoes (100 attack) you'd actually have 126 attack.

I've yet to find an answer for this yet, so while the thread seems active:

 

Do other starbases receive the bonuses? For example, if I set up an influence base within the AOI of a military base, do the bases themselves get the attack/defense buffs?

So military starbase assist modules are different from the bonus you get from military resource mines? I kind of expected to see someone like you say "You can help the defenses of other starbases, but not their attack values."

Precisely. They DO benefit from racial bonuses (which is what mining bonuses give), but not from the per-ship bonus that military starbases give. I'd have to check, but I'm fairly sure armed trade ships don't get those bonuses either.
