Name Generator Request

Configurable Random Name Generator

It'd be very nice to have a configurable random name generator included with the various world-building tools, and to be able to associate a given random name configuration (let's call it a "dictionary") with a given custom object.

For example, I create a custom light infantry unit.  But seeing "Light Infantry Unit" is boring.  I'd like it to be called "So-and-so's Light Company", where "So-and-so" is a name that sounds "Dol-Sirionish" to me.  Maybe each Kingdom/Empire gets a dictionary of people names, place names, etc.  Or, maybe I just create my own "Dol-Sirion People Names" dictionary, and associate it with my unit.

It's definitely cheese, but I think it'd be fun for the OCD micromanagers out there.  Not that I am one.  Or anything.

Actually that would be kind of neat.

See if you set up your empire lore to be a bit like the roman empire your soldiers would be organized into legions. So in the game infantry units built in different cities would each come from a different legion. You might go into battle with soldiers from Legio XXI (or 21) and cavalry from Legio III (or 3).

What we can do with something like this depends entirely on how much control we have over detail and our ability to link units to situational details like the city the unit was built.

master of Magic had a random name generator (or a very long list of names), I assume this will have something similar, it would be nice to see it have different configuration options.    Maybe customizable configuration setups (for like naming conventions and such) that can be shared like everything else.

If they could add as much detail as The Game from Stargate Atlantis, that would be nice... Hopefully they have the time to implement details such as this to Elemental. And even if they do not, mods will probably add much of it. RP elements which have no impact on the game, such as names, physical appearance, ect, should be added and will enhance the immersion if done properly. I see no reason why custom names would not be done; we already have custom units thanks to their physics simulation capabilities shown in a dev journal and so custom names for groups of said units would make sense as the next logical step.

For those of us who might end up mostly playing out at the cloth map level, names could be the most important "decoration" for units. I'd like to be able to build a names list and associate it with a unit type.

I like the ability to name, and rename, units.  Over the years I have gotten in the habit in some games, like the old Panzer General and HoI, of developing a list of decorations for units then adding these decorations after they perform particularly well, whether it be a ' for serving in a particular campaign or a * for noteworthy valor in a battle.  It is also nice to be able to incorporate name changes, so that the light infantry which conquors the city of Boston may be renamed from the "23rd Rangers" to the "Boston Rangers".

If the back-story for the official races/factions are that well developed to require a name generator, that's probably a good sign.  If such an animal is implemented, I would like to see it exposed to the modding community who may wish to plug in their own name constructors for any custom created races/factions.

master of magic had a name generator.  It had NO back-story at all.  So I wouldn't say its a sign of anything really.  It needs one really, even if it isn't as complex as what is requested.

Title of this thread should be  Name Generator Request...  World Builder Request is not as accurate.

There's a great names generator out there on internet that could give really cool ideas: The Everchanging Book of Names (EBoN: http://ebon.pyorre.net/).

As for the names - my friend  played an RPG game once. For the request "enter valid name" he entered "valid name". The dialogs appeared pretty funny (Hello Valid Name.....)

What about something kinda how you can generate the names of whatever in Dwarf Fortress?  Considering there's lore in this game likewise, history and such, something roughly comparable might be a nice touch of detail to grace it with.
