Circuit City alleged sales

Went to circuit city yesterday, to browse and maybe find a deal or two, they had the guy out front holding the sign say huge say xx% off, etc, i was really disappointed when i went in, they had a lot of stock but the sales were non existant, actually i thought some of the stuff was overpriced, all i went in for was for an HDMI cable, and they werent even marked down, so i guess i stick with my favorite store Micro Center, friday i went to micro center in cambridge mass, and bought a 52" sony bravia tv, the same tv was 600 dollars more at best buy on sale, and 800 dollars more at the Sony Store outlet, moral of the story is Micro Center is the best place to buy electronics, i know their stores are few and far between, but they do do online orders, and stand behind what they sell

This is a big reason why their asses are goin' out of business in the first place!

It's sad for the many folks who lost their jobs, but the chain's mere existance was based on an inept inability to see through their own greed.  They literally chased their customers away with Sky High prices and horrible service.  Face it, that's their rep!

Bottom line, Circuit City has never been about the consumer and this lack of understanding is what managed them right into the ground.

I'll bet all the top Execs. brass and CEO's have their parachutes and have probably already bailed out sitting on fat for life.

Wait and see what the prices are liquidated to just before the store's doors close for the last time.

We stopped in to see what we might pick up cheap.  Boy was we suprised.  I agree, the prices were the same if not more than at other stores.  Not a going out of business sale.>:(

From my own experience the only thing that Circuit City was ever good for and this may sound harsh, was to check out the prices of the latest electronics, so I can go and find it some place else for much cheaper.

Seriously, for an average income consumer, they've always sucked.

My personal buying habits hardly ever take me to stores that are having going out of business sales.  I always seek the best price for what I am looking for, and it's never on credit, even to save a $.  Buying an item that may be marked down even if you were not in the market for it is not a deal, at least in my way of thinking.  Yeah I know, strange.  :sun:

I never buy where you have to use a rebate in order to get down to the actual price.:annoyed:

Since they can always return the stock to the manufacturer or sell it at auction to another warehousing company, these franchise chain stores never have real going out of business sales.  The best deal you will get is close to what you'd pay an online vendor for in the first place.  So, yeah, pass.

Just took a look at MicroCenter's web site - only 3 TV's listed, the largest a 32" 1080i Viewsonic.  Too bad, I'm considering finally buying an HD flatscreen TV.  Figure the prices will be better post-SuperBowl. ;)

I worked for Linens N' Things, and when they started their "liquidation sale", the liquidators marked everything-including previously reduced clearance-up to full retail in order to 'reduce' the prices 10-20%. It was a complete and total joke. But, those who over-ran the store thought they were getting real bargains. We got more complaints from customers who couldn't read the policy signs, such as "all sales final" and "no refunds or returns".

Buyers, beware. There will be more retailers folding, and more alleged "liquidation sales". It seems like the only people hiring are the liquidation companies. If any of you have disposable income, how about sharing it with those of us out of work?

We have some stores in Oz like that, who advertise alleged sales just to get you through their doors.  Once inside you're always disappoiinted, but what they're hoping for is a lot of people to think: "Oh, while I'm in here.", and walk out with various items they may have... probably would have purchased elsewhere.  One such store, Waltons, no longer exists because it refused to adjust with the times and cater to consumer/market needs and wants.  It was always top dollar on everything, and while they made getting credit easy, that was also top dollar and more than doubled the original purchase price... meaning it took people years to pay goods off in some cases.

As for PC items, my local Pc store, a one-man/one store operation, beats the larger retailers 90% of the time on price, and most definitely on service, so now I don't even bother shopping around and just go straight to him.

One such retailer, Harvey Norman, advertises that they will NOT be beaten on price, but when I made a tentative inquiry on an AverTV USB TV tuner (their price $149.85) and told the clerk I could get the exact same item at my local PC store for $92.45, he told me to take in the receipt and they'd beat it by 5%... in other words (because advertising didn't count), I would have had to actually buy it elewhere to get their lowest price.  Yeah right!  I bought it at my local PC store, but just couldn't be bothered with the time and effort of going back to Harvey Norman for a lousy 5% on an extra, while handy, I didn't want or need.

I agree about MicroCenter. I have one about 20 minutes from my house and that's about the only place I'll go for computer related stuff. I went in our Circuit City only once and was very disappointed in the lack of knowledge of the salespeople. I think they pulled whoever they could find off of the street and put a name tag on them. o_O

Another complaint I have about the larger tech/electronics stores is how the now pre-package every damned thing, charge more for it and make you buy more than you need.  For example, My nephew and I went out the other day to buy 11 metres of digital coaxial cable and about 10 keepers to fix it to the wall/facia board. The coax came in 5 - 10 and 20 metre packs in most stores, and the keepers came in packs of 20... meaning I had to pay for 9 more metres of cable than I needed, and 10 more keepers than I needed.  So we went to a small hardware store a bit father on where we could buy the cable off the roll for 90c per metre and the keepers individually for 5c each, a grand total of $10.50 and saving around twenty bucks if we had bought the pre-packaged stuff from the larger stores.
