As you may have noticed Howdidudothat started a thread blacklisting players.

It seems that all one has to do to end up on his blacklist is piss him off. Frankly, I think that is an extremely stupid idea considering the small size of our community and the fact that he is the one who gets to edit the blacklist. I felt obligated to make this post  because of the critisisim of several players, both online and in the forums, have towards his damaging thread. Here is what some of you have to say

As a new player to Sins I am quite disgusted by the multiplayer community so far - do you really need to name and shame?

I play games to relax and have fun. So far I have had mainly bad experiences from Sins. People 'smurfing' (get a life), so called pro players that join games clearly marked 'new players' whats the point?

Some vets have been nice and given me tips on how to play better and such, while most are egotistical pricks. I don't think any of this helps the very low online presence of the game and threads like this are very damaging for the community as a whole. If I was working for stardock/IC marketing I would pull this thread as this puts off new players like myself ever going back online.

There are many more but the point here is that Howdidudothat should not have that authority over the online community. I don't want him giving me a bad rep just because he feels like it, and I want his thread removed.

your empty threats mean nothing to me, they haven't since day one Athilis.  I can't believe at one time I thought you were a class act.  You have proven to me that your all but that.  I try and remain civil to those that are civil, if I bad mouthed someone or made a comment it wasn't just because it felt like the right thing to do at that moment it was for a valid reason period.  I'm not some punk kid that goes around indiscriminately harassing people, that's not my nature. You haven't an inclinge of a clue as to who I am or what I'm about, you know me only as "itsmevic" you do not know the type of person that I am, therefore when you make your threats do your research on someone before hand, like I have on you already.

The point is, he'd have the right to make a blacklist on his own private forum or weblog, but the Stardock Forums are not public commons. The very concept of blacklists involve defamation. This can lead to unnecessary and preventable legal liability for Stardock. That is why many gaming forums disallow this type of thread altogether.

Note that as far as I know, a comment is only defamation if it's false.  If it's true then it's not defamation.  (Now, that's not the same as being able to prove it or disprove it in a court of law, but the principle is that if something is true, it's not libel or slander.)

Legal niceties are essentially irrelevant in this case: even a frivolous allegation of defamation via a blacklist can cost a company money to resolve. It's a (minor) risk factor that can be completely and cheaply eliminated by enforcing a moderation policy that forbids such discussions. Even diverting the attention of an executive to deal with the legal matter (beyond the initial force multiplier of making the general policy decision) is a wasted expense. That's all.

What - all I said is that someone OTHER THEN ME had created a non-stardock related presence for tracking a Sins blacklist. This means there won't be issues over forum rules here... Simple.

*Sigh* All this time spent bitching over various threads about the completly childish topic of a blacklist and subsequent topics on retaliation to the blacklist when you all could just be playing the game and making love to your many large breasted women.

I don't care how a game plays anymore, everyone has pissed someone off whether it be on sins, halo, gears, mario kart or barbie horse adventure online. Just stop making threads like this it's degrading the community, I'm ashamed to be associated with this forum.

The blacklist was already dealt with; as noted there it is not helpful to single players out and ostracize them based on some isloated report or arbitrary criteria. Unless there's some new blacklist elsewhere, there should be nothing more to discuss about that. If you guys want to keep fighting over it, take it private or drop the matter, we won't have it here (or on ICO).

 

OTOH If you want to make lists giving positive, constructive feedback on other users, that's fine, but make certain to keep it that way; no insults or allegations.
