box keeps telling me to order desktopx 3.0 today

Hi all,

I'm kind of new here to this forum so i'm not sure if this post is in the right place or not; if it isn't I do appologize and hope that someone would point me to right place to post this question;

ANYways, I have windows vista and desktopX 3.5 (not pro, just the one you can download for free from stardock) installed on my system and have a regular desktop theme, which I have set to load up whenever I turn on my computer.

The problem is that everytime I start desktopx, if it hasn't been restarted within an hour I get a dialog box which prompts me to order desktopx 3. 0 today! (yes, 3.0, and yes I have 3.5 installed) with only the options down at the bottom being "full details" and "buy"

At first there was another option which said "continue" but now there is not.

As of right now, whenever that box comes up when I start up, all I can do to get rid of it is to restart desktopX and everything will work fine.

I would like to know if this add is a mandatory thing which is "the price" for installing this program for free or if it is just a bug with my current settings.

thanks in advance.

The trial has expired.  It's a good time to buy.  :)

It's a bug. My computer has standard (Pro is unaffordable . . . plus I'm 14) and that used to happen.

well, if it IS a bug, would you happen to know how I can fix it? It is rather annoying...

You just got information from a Stardock employee with years of experience with their software and a 14 year old.......who do you think you should believe?  The way these fine programs are written and maintained cost money, so no one should expect "freeware" to be without ads.

Since you are using the free trial, this isn't a bug. You will have to buy either the Client or Standard version. If that happens again after installing the registered version, then you will have to contact support (make sure you uninstall the trial and reboot before installing the registered version).

If you don't have access to a credit card, there are other order options. You might also want to check if the Stardock store accepts pre-paid credit cards if you have one.

Sorry XD! I didn't realize that was a stardock employee!

But thank you everyone for your replies, I do have one more question though, since it isn't a bug and it is freeware then, is this the extent of the add?

Meaning, will I continue to be able to use the free trial version of desktopx or will it completly expire after some time so that In order to use it at all, I would have to buy the professional version?

Thanks again.

  • License:

Free to try; $14.95 to buy

I'm guessing it'll will it completly expire after some time so that in order to use it at all, you will have to buy the professional version

I am using the trial version Bichur & angus. Sorry, I got mixed up. I thought he meant the glitch I used to have, where I got like 20 popups. I have used the trial for a good 6 months, skinned successfully (IMHO) . . . you can't expect everyone to pay to contribute...

No, you can't but this IS a great program and you can't expect such a program that comes with support, updates, not to mention being the best in it's class, to be free.

The way I see it, it's completly understandable for stardock to ask for 14.95 for the license to a program AFTER letting you try it out for six months with no strings attached.

Unfortunately, I'm 14 and I am simply not going to pay $15. That doesn't even give you real upgrades. For a real enhancement you need to get Pro in my understanding, which is like $70.

Firstly, I'm not allowed...

And anyways, if I do get to buy it I will be waiting for DX 4.

The ONLY reason to get pro is if you have the desire to make EXE files that work without DX, so if you want to give them to friends that dont have (nor want to have) DX than this is your call.  If you want to make DX widgets for yourself or for others with DX, than the MASSIVE $15 surely will not break you.
