Fantasy Wars / Fantasy General Nostalgia

Anyone played this?

Looks more Fantasy General influenced, whereas Elemental is more Master of Magic influenced.

man, this looks like I'd be interested in the video, if I could understand it.  I've been trying to find a video about it in english, but I can't.   This is a sad day for me, since this looks like a pretty solid indy title (I like indipendent devs)

There is a demo on the main site.  maybe I'll check that out

It looks pretty sweet. Post your thoughts if either of you end up playing it.

Fantasy wars is a great game. I have almot completed the last campaign and reccomend it.  Aeon has it right it has a lot in comon with fantasy general.  There is already an expansion on the way I am hoping it and Gal civ II will hold me until Elemental is available.

actually Elven Legacy is a stand alone sequel to FW.  Kings Bounty is also a great game (although not purely a TBS) and it also has a stand alone expansion/sequel on the way.  i am also looking forward to majesty 2 from 1C.

I played the demo some time ago and liked it but was turned off by the turn limits...I hate games with turn limits.  I ended up getting a copy of AOW

can't you turn off the turn limit feature in the full game though?  I recall other TBS games that have something like that.

if i remember correctly, many were asking for that on their forums but they had not done it yet.  i could be wrong though

Fantasy Wars is basically a graphical update of Fantasy General - loosing a minimal amount of actual gameplay nuances, keeping the defining ones and, sadly, put it in a much less interesting setting (however, arguably prettier than Sprite-based Fantasy General). If you liked Fantasy General (best fantasy TBS of all time) you'll most likely like Fantasy Wars.

best fantasy TBS of all time!?   thats a boostful claim.   Well, you just motivated me to go find it and play this.  I accept your challange, lets see if its as good as you say.

Those shoulder pads must be 4 inches thick! The game looks pretty but it falls for so very many tropes.

Enormous shoulder pads are so 2004.

Thread lightly, for such words are paramount to heresy in these parts!

Haha, nice to see a discussion about this and (the superior) Fantasy General.

My take on Fantasy Wars is that it's a good enough game though it isn't ground breaking and exciting as it could be. King's Bounty: The Legend, which was basically a remake of . . . King's Bounty, but it had enough personality to give it a definite thumbs up from me. However, the Heroes of Might and Magic formula that King's Bounty sticks to is getting really, really old to me (though I'm still stoked for Disciples III, though I don't think it'll ever see the light of day at this point), so what I like about FW is what's different from that forumla: more of a focus on tactics, using landscape in battles, turn limit forces you to keep moving.

In the end, though, I prefer Fantasy General. The graphics are nonexistent in FG, so you're simply playing for gameplay and it delivers in spades.

If you are serious about turn-based strategy, pretty much all the good stuff over the last few years has come from either Stardock or 1C (Dominions 3 was also good though could have used a bigger budget, and of course some excellent Civ4 mods). Fantasy Wars is a great title but the Orc campaign is punishingly hard at the end. Could have used a tad more balancing. The "turn-limit" in that game is the developers' way of gauging difficulty level. Trying to race across a map against the clock raises risk considerably and will result in casualties but in return is rewarded with better prizes at the end of each scenario. If this makes the game too difficult for the methodical, then just lower the difficulty to "easy". I would not recommend playing on "hard" as the scenarios are pretty challenging on "normal".

Fantasy Wars had some really nice Developers - the turn limits they give you are incredibly lax compared to what they derived it from. Fantasy General gives you limits that really make you think about how you can win a given scenario without losing the war via attrition.

Incidentally, Fantasy General's harsh difficulty is explained by it's backstory - think Lord of the Rings, if Sauron had won and, a decade later, you lead a ragtag army into the heart of Mordor. Obviously, one defeat will result in you losing, well, everything - and any taking too long will result in a deadly response from the evil guy.

Well, it is an SSI game, which should mean a lot to a connoisseur of Turn based Strategy.

Note that I don't count the Master of Magic, Age of Wonders, etc. style games as being in the same genre as FG - the former are pretty much Fantasy (Turn based) 4x games.

Fantasy general was HARD. I remember putting it on easy, rolling out as the wizard with magical creatures and getting my ass kicked every time on the second or third mission. The only thing I remember was that the mission had enemy hto air balloons.

That'd be the second continent - the first one is basically a tutorial/level up your guys zone against a General that "Sauron" wants to get rid of anyway. Second Continent means you're fighting someone actually competent - equating to being completely outclassed both in quality and quantity of troops. While having the worse tactical position on the field.

God I love Fantasy General.

PS.: for the people picking it up now, and having a hard time - try playing as Marcus the Infantry General. Heavy and Light Infantry is generally viable throughout the first two continents, and having more heroes is never a bad thing.

Thanks for those mp3's, Aeon.

Speaking of picking it up where can it be found nowadays? I played it a long time ago off of HOTU but then later I never got it working with XP and forgot about it.

Fantasy General was great and highly addictive. Apparently it is official abandonware now and there are several sites where you can download it. Unfortunately no one has uploaded good quality mp3s of the complete soundtrack anywhere that I've found. :(

There are some great ideas for units in FG that it would be fun to have in Elemental. I liked the Cobramen and the jungle continent in general.

Man, all these games bring back great memories.  I was in the mood for an old school fantasy tbs today, and here I ended my search.  I didn't know Stardock had one in the oven but I'm excited.  I've been around since the days of Corporate Machine, but this is my first post on these forums.  Too bad it is still months away, I guess I need to get out my credit card :erk:

Speaking of old time fantasy wargames, anyone play Conquered Kingdoms from QQP back in the day.  All the talk about these oldies but goodies brought it to mind.

I don't remember Conquered Kingdoms, but I do remember Seven Kingdoms - which was basically a real-time 4x Fantasy game. Kind of a Sins of a Solar Empire but in a Fantasy setting. It was hard as all hell, but really fun once you got the hang of it.

Yeah, Fantasy General was great back in the day... probably still is quite a bit of fun.  I think I still have the fairly thick strategy guide for that as I came across it while I was browsing through my old computer books recently.  There was a lot of strategy and info I learned from that :).  I still don't think I ever quite completed it, though.

Yup, Fantasy General was realy good, I liked it realy...

But, for me is still Age of Wonders and the sequels of it, the greatest fantasy tbs. I love the battles in AoW2SM, especialy sieging cities and towers or to defend them with only some archers and one or two foot soldiers. Great memmories...:|   And not to forget the atmosphere of the world. I hope Elemental can also build up such a feeling.

For anyone who doesn't know this game, take a look at http://aow2.heavengames.com/ |-)

And hello to everybody, I hope you understand my bad english. best wishes

That's right, cuz we all know the best fantasy TBS of all time was actually Sword of Aragon.

What?! :)

Folks here gonna give Elven Legacy a shot in another week or so?  Looks like they are serious about improving on Fantasy Wars.  I'll grab it off Impulse since it happened to get added a little while back.

Also, both Seven Kingdoms games can be had for a tiny sum on GoG...though there's apparently a bit of a music glitch with the sequel that I think still needs officially resolving.
