[Possible fix]Game Killling Error! Unable to launch after minidump! Can't uninstall either! XML (28,8) is the problem?

Hey I just downloaded the entrenchment beta 2.0 and the V1.13

Not sure if this should be in technical or beta but I am sure the problem is in beta 2.0

After 15-30 minutes of gameplay I get a minidump right and I connot find where it stashed the data so any help there would be nice; tell me where the minidump stashed its self and i'll send it your way stardock!

But thats not the real problem! After I Rebooted the system beacuse the 1.13 needed a reboot my game would CTD every time I tried to launch! Both Vinalla and Entrenchment sins CTDed I think the problem was the entrechment beacuse when I tried to un-install entrenchment I got the message "There is and error in the XML document (28,8)" and it would even let me uninstall! At least I can re-install vinalla sins so I will try that

It may also be beacuse the download for entrenchment finished first and I started playing it without the 1.13 which was still going, now that I think of it the mini-dump was almost exactly when the 1.13 finished I guess having the game running while the version of sins updates was not so smart.

Anyone else get this problem? I hear there are minidumps but nothing like this....

Any and all support appreaciated!

Solution from tiberius: In the "My Games" in Impulse, right-click the Entrenchment button and select "Verify Installation".  A window should come up stating that Entrenchment is installed incorrectly, and that you should obtain an update.  After you close the window, a 21 megabyte update becomes available that should fix the problem.  Hope this helps!

If you need to uninstall: Manualy wipe entenchment and vinella sins by going into Mycomputer then go into        C:/Program files/Stardock games and delete sins from there but if you use tiberius' solution it shouldn't come to that

Thanks to everyone who helped to find the solution!

In vista, the minidump is in...

Users/<name>/AppData/Local/Temp/Sins%20Dump/

Rest of it just sounds wierd -- be aware that, as far as I know, 1.13 and entrenchment beta 2 are seperate downloads, and you don't need one if you have the other (someoen correct me if I'm wrong...)

Edit: I don't have the Local folder I have a stardock one but it's just for impulse anyone know the location for XP?

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp\Sins Dump

And it's [email protected]

just one other thing you have to alter the file display settings to show hidden/system folders to see local settings folder

Thanks everyone I got the minidump sent and now I just need some Stardock or Iron Clad members to stumble across this thread.

In the meantime I can't play my game :(

E-mail the minidump in.  Also, if you are playing on highest graphics, try turning them down a notch or three -- there is a known bug involving entrenchment and maxxed graphics that IC is busy trying to track down.

Thanks Ron, I did send the minidump and I got a reply advising me to lower the texture settings.

It is strange that one minidump would courrupt my entire game though, or was it another factor?

Sound like both an install and texture problem. I'd wipe both installs and just grab entrenchment and try it on the lowest graphic settings. If that works, bring them up until you have a problem.

I also seem to have the same problem XML (28, 8).   However, after reinstalling I found the game will no longer start or run now.  At least before, I could play for a bit before it died.

Same problem being unable to install Entrenchment because of XML (28, 8).  The first time I installed beta 2, the game would not run.  I uninstalled vanilla Sins and reinstalled upto 1.13, and now the basic game will run, but Entrenchment will not, though it says it is installed in my Impulse browser.

Holmes, I had a similar problem, but was eventually able to fix it.  In the "My Games" in Impulse, right-click the Entrenchment button and select "Verify Installation".  A window should come up stating that Entrenchment is installed incorrectly, and that you should obtain an update.  After you close the window, a 21 megabyte update becomes available that should fix the problem.  Hope this helps!

Thanks Blair I wiped both my games and re-installed, I put textures to medium but still got a mini-dump; will try low tomorrow.

@Manofest and Holmes: if you need to re-install like I did, go in to your drive (should be C:/programfiles/Stardock Games) and delete the Sins folder from there and re-install it but I would try tiberius' solution first although I needed a re-install

Second minidump did not need to re-install game for the second time so maybe it's fixed (aside form the dumps of course)

That seemed to work.  I was able to play on a medium sized random map for about an hour with no problems.  I turned down the ingame settings to medium to be safe, but it works now.

Edit:  I should clarify:  I verified installation and updated Entrenchment.

Thanks tiberius48, it did say I needed to update again.  However, it's been stuck on 'Verifying Download' for about an hour or so.  Is that similar to your situation.

Check and see if Legacy Download System is enabled in Preferences.  To do this, click the Stardock Icon and select "Preferences," then click "Connection" under Advanced Settings.  Uncheck "Legacy Download System (BITS)" to disable that option and see if the update is unstuck.  I had problems downloading the update when I enabled BITS.

It was already de-selected, but then I noticed that I had a mod setup to start automatically.  Turning it off fixed everything.  Thanks!

i crash immeditly after launch too. Ive never played bta just got it had TONS of problems installing it as weas, always said entrench was in and could find file blah blah. I found it was installing the beta nad the orig sins to 2 seperate directories so i copied beta and pasted in sins folder now i at least launch game but get error and minidump immediatly before anything shows up

I can't even install the game. I don't even get to the point where it asks for my serial number. I have more than adequate specs and my OS is Windows 7.

cmcastl, what are the error messages/point of failure to install?

the more information you can give us the better we can help you

Thanks for showing some interest, Harpo.

The game installs with no error messages and then invites me to launch. What I then get is a "cursor" and a black screen. :( I wait several minutes and nothing happens.

I have tried to so many times to install/uninstall/reinstall this game and I used to get a minidump but not recently it seems so I don't think I can send you one. I might try looking for one after I get off this thread, though.

Of possible significance. Obviously, I get no intro and secondly, I am not invited at any point to provide a serial number, which I know Stardock is hot on. So obviously I am not getting far enough into the complete installation for that to be requested.

I installed a new Impulse without problems when I first installed the game and it is always advertising me things so I can't think it is a problem with my firewall.

I have a studio XPS with Windows 7, which I got only a few months back.

cmcastl,

the serial number is ONLY needed in impulse to get updates,

the stopping during the start of sins COULD be your firewall stopping sins (note the sins of a solar empire OR entrenchment OR diplomacy exe's from accessing the internet for multiplayer.

which firewall are you useing?

I did ask for a BIT more detail of the computer system ie what is the system specifications, which firewall, which antivirus, which antispywares are installed.

this info is needed (at least to the version of the software involved) so that we can offer suggestions to help solve the issue(s)

I also have a similar issue with updates/freash installs and zonealarm and other firewalls wanting to pop up a window asking wheather or not this program is to be allowed out to the internet, but as I usually use windowed mode I see the popups

My firewall is Symantec. I don't get asked whether I want to allow a gate opened into or from the Internet. Impulse had no problems with the Symantic firewall, as I have observed. It pops up to to pass on new advertisements on booting.

I have an Intel quad processor, 2.8 MHZ. 6 Gig memory. Windows 7 OS.

How do I go to Windowed mode? Does it interfere with my Symantec firewall?

I do not know silly mens tek firewall, but the way that their antivirus interferes it could be the cause( does the firewall pop up a message box when a program updates and wants to go to the internet?, if yes then it IS the cause, if no then we have to look further)

the simplest  way to force sins/entrenchment and diplomacy into windowed mode is to edit the 'user.setting'(sins/entrenchment)'diplomacy.user.setting' diplomacy, and look at line 13

VideoIsWindowed TRUE (is windowed mode) and VideoIsWindowed FALSE (is fullscreen mode)( note the true/false NEEDS TO BE UPPER CASE)

the user.setting files are in the settings folder ie
C:\Users\'user name'\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Setting

NOTE the first two folders after the 'user name' are hidden , so to see them you must first click on 'tools' then 'folder options', then 'view', then click on 'show hidden files& folders' then click ok, then you will be able to browse your want to the folder. I suggest when you find the folder that you create a shortcut to it on the desktop

NOTE 2 the 'user name' in the above paths is your WINDOWS login user name, eg Administrator

hope this helps

Always turn off security suites while installing safe software.  They're nothing but grief in that circumstance.
