From the Ashes - The story of mankind

From the Ashes - The story of mankind

In 2175 the human race was in ecstasy. For over a century now, since 2054 to be exact, most human beings were living under some form of population control. the right to have a child was handed out to only select families. Some couples waited up to ten years for various governements to process their requests only to be denied after an eternity of painful and anxious wait. Our planet was only so big and with only so many ressources. We as a species had to develop mature and concrete steps to make sure our civilization, and our very existence would not be put in jeopardy! Though draconian these measures were vital and by 2097, the year the planet unified its most powerful governments into one overarching entity, deliberately breaking the Prime Natal Law resulted in capital punishment within 7 days of being convicted. All non-deliberate pregnancies were immediately aborted and the man subject to capital punishment. Overcrowded cities were not uncommon to have disease outbreaks, and sometimes the governemtn took far too long to respond and aid the civilians affected. Morale throughout our species was at an all-time low. Surely there have been episodes in the history of mankind where a certain people have been oppressed to the brink of losing all faith in life. Wars had ravaged our planet time and time again and yet we never seemed to quite learn our lesson, but at this point in our history things were different. The lethargy and decay in which the masses of our civilization had fallen into thanks to inadequate and ill-conceived gov't actions led to a progressive massive morale slump the likes of which history had never recorded. And while the people suffered, state media (for all media was state-owned) talked of summit meetings in which our great leaders pledged trillions of dollars to support the growing crisis...They were skilfull at throwing sand in our eyes while the real problems festered underneath.

But all of this was about to change. In 2170 a brilliant and enigmatic man by the name of Dr. William Allison descovered how to properly conduct cold fusion. This incredible discovery led to a vast array of public works and iniatives that quickly brought the standard of living up again. Energy was now affordable! Artists began recording music again, Intercontinental travel became available to everyone, the spark our civilization needed had finally come. The highest epitome of our pride and joy that every human had was revealed 5 years later in 2175 when the same Dr. Allison created what would become known as Hyperdrive.

Hyperdrive was a means of interstellar travel. For centuries humans had looked towards the stars and wondered, impotent to do anything else really. Over time we embarked on various projects to get us ever closer to the stars. During the period known as the cold war the Soviets had managed to build their very own space station in orbit of our planet. Mir was later brought down in the Pacific Ocean as a new space station began construction after the cold war ended. The ISS (International Space Station) served its purpose well into the 21st century eventually upgrading to a relay post between Earth and the moon research facility (known as Grey Rock). As humans continued to progress a small colony was established on Mars and by 2175 there were up to 3000 people living on Mars, most from the military.

When Dr. Allison died on december 5th 2212 a planet wide service was organized. Every country under the banner of the United Earth Federation had a day of mourning. People flocked to the streets to witness a funeral on the giant screens lining the large boulevards of the planet's great capital cities. Though humanity had lost it's greatest mind and scientific achiever since Einstein it would lose all that it had gained at far greater cost.

On decemeber 7th 2212 the independent governement of Russia declared that all people, not jsut those bearing the flag of the UEF, should have full access to cold fusion technology. Furthermore the Russian Ambasador to the UEF made a shocking statement when he accused certain elements in the UNA gov't (Union of North America government) of witholding certain aspects of the technology and not alowing other UEF states full control over the patent laws of the tech. UNA answered back saying such propositions were ludicrous and that the current UEF gov't could attest to that. The Russians countered by stating that all major power strutures within the UEF were held by UNA lobbyists and bureaucrats, and that an impartial jury could never be formed to put the matter ot a close. At the same time Russia secretly transported over 25 nuclear warheads and delivery systems to its closest economic allies in central America, namely Venezuala. When UNA spy satelites caugth the Russians red-handed they responded by saying that the nukes would only be withdrawn if the cold fusions patents were made available to a number of companies worldwide instead of the power-hungry UNA conglomerates. An emergency session of the UEF was immediately called but two days later negotiations were at a standstill. The UNA gov't met and decided that a unilateral plan of action was needed. Strike teams were assembled to go into venezuala and Ecuador to take out and nullify the warheads. They failed.

On decemeber 12th 2212 the first bomb went off (some say in Moscow, while others say in Washington) and all that we had worked for over the past 10 000 years as a species was gone. Flash after Flash of Brigth all-encompassing light shook our planet to its very foundations until, when nuclear winter settled in, we were but a shadow of our former selves.

ughhh guys I hate to do this but I have to postpone the next post. I've been able to play to where I want to be in the game from a story-telling perspective, but i haven't been able to get ahead in actually writing it. Sorry folks. However on the other hand be prepared for some big developments!

Mambaman you flatter too much :D

I have never made a post on this forum until now, but I have been reading your AAR from the beginning and I wanted to express my most sincere thanks.  Your writing has helped me pass many hours working graveyard at a gas station and I agree with the other posters in this thread when they say your writing is easily one of the better stories I have read recently (and I read BOOKS 8O ).  Keep up the good work and if this story is left unfinished for some reason I'm sure I'm sure I speak for many others when I say I will JUMP OFF A SKYSCRAPER ONTO A PILE OF ORPHANS IN DESPAIR.  So for the orphans sake, please finish the story.  I don't care if it takes months or years, as long as there is a finale I will be pleased.

Not that I'm saying I expect you to quit and bail, but if you do be advised it might be considered an act of war, and I may have to invade your home planet with some mass drivers and my tidal wave FUBAR device.

tl;dr Enjoying this immensely,

Wow ashoob I knew there might be lurkers but never some as dedicated as you! lol rest assured this story will be finished. I've just been trying to interweave properly the next few chapters. I'm hesitating with introducing a new character since I feel there are too many already, but at the same time there is a specific aspect of the story I would like to tell and the only way to do so would be to introduce the said new character.

I thank you very much for the encouragements and I will do my utmost to post tommorrow. Half of the chapter is already finished but Im playing with the idea of releasing two chapters in a row.

When i first started writing this story I never thought it could be this much work and effort, but when people write what you just wrote it makes it all worth it.

cheers and stay posted for tomorrow evening.

I'm giddy for the next installment, and to be honest I wrote my previous post because I have been enjoying your posts better than most recent books I have read and I feel I am not the only one.  For a long time I never bothered even signing on and posting because most of my questions have been answered and can be found with a little bit of searching.  Nonetheless, I still really enjoy your work and if you have any other works you might have written please let

                                                                                                                           -Aggh!-

me know, I am always interested on reading material written with a sincere desire to CREATE!

TFS Harvard
Fivel Action Group
Fivel System
Rear-Admiral Latona Vavilov commanding

Nolan wasn't one for military decorum. Not that he didn't like it, simply that he never understood all of it especially since he wasn't exactly from a military background. His Fleet Commander, a Russian veteran and a Rear-Admiral of the Terran Galactic Navy, loved it. Apparently they were partaking in one at the current moment.

Nolan sat at one side of a finely crafted wodden table suited perfectly for Vavilov's spacious cabin. The word spacious beeing very generous, but compared to the tight quarters of the regular midshipsman this was defenitely luxury. At the head of the table sat Vavilov and on Nolan's opposite side Captain Darryl Renges of the Tehran. The fourth side of the table was actually the wall of the cabin. The table doubled up for a work desk during times when the Rear-Admiral wasn't dining. This was not one of those times.

Nolan was sipping a fine Argentinian Wine. A 2147 Salentein Reserve. The only Argentinian vintage to have survived the cataclysm. He had tasted fine liquors and all sorts of alcohol during his early times on the Persephone, but this was something special. A young ensign waited patiently for Nolan to finish his sip of wine before depositing was smelled like the most delicious rack of lamb he was ever going to taste. Once everyone had been served Vavilov raised her glass and toasted to the Federation and to the success of the Fivel Action Group. They had trained non-stop and had begun exercising on mock enemies to formulate strategies encompassing all three ships working together. The efficient Helios AI had been more than a match for the combined human minds.

"Sir If I may say so this is most gracious of you to share your time and your cabin with us" Renges said.

"I like to reward my officers when they work hard and accomplish positive results." Vavilov responded with a smile and mouthful of tender meet.

This was the first time the three captains were having dinner together. There had been many meetings but never such as this. During the meal they spoke of nothing military or political. Renges reminised about his ranch in North Dakota while Latona spoke of endless beauty in the Siberian wilderness during the stillness of winter. When they told stories, Nolan described how he came to meet Bradshaw and their first encounter. The two others loved it.

"Commodore Bradhsaw is one of the most devoted and intelligent human beings. It is to him that we owe mankind's speedy recovery from the cataclysm." Latona said afterwards.

At that moment the air seemed to tense up as the Rear-Admiral looked into each of her subordinates' eyes.

"Tommorrow we receive Irene via Echelon."

Nolan immediately frowned. "How do you know sir?"

Sol system
Earth
Federation Capital of New Johanesburg

"I will not deploy the tranports when there has been no overt hostile act by the Drengin Empire. It is one thing to deploy warships in strategic positions, but it is something else entirely when you start to park stellar marines in orbit around a foreign planet." The Prime Magistrate was bellowing across the table in a firm and authoritative manner. The presence of Commodore Bradshaw always made him assert himself with his loud voice. He didn't like to be pushed around by the military man.

"Howard" Bradshaw said in a diminituive way "I don't need to remind you that as Commodore of the Galactic Navy I am commander in Chief of all armed forces. If I wish to park a few transports as you so eloquently put it, then that's exactly what I'll do."

"Diplomatic talks are still ongoing. We're still trying to reverse the last UP council decision. Diplomacy takes times Alan."

"Diplomacy buys time." countered Bradshaw, "And we've given them enough of it."

One week prior to this meeting the United Planets Council had met to discuss the newest resolution proposed by the Drengin. The resolution called for a Starbase tax on every starbase not in its owner's legal boundaries. With the increasing influence of the Drengin Empire its legal boundaries had swelled to encompass an increasing number of Terran worlds and starbases. The tax would put a serious dent in the Federation's budget and force policy makers to reduce the overall industrial output of the Combine Corporations. Unemployment wou follow suit and that was not acceptable. The Drengin had easily won the issue and the Federation was attempting to reverse the decision, but to no avail.

"Do you not see how they are forcing us into a corner. They force us to change our internal policies with their foreign diplomacy while at the same time they've already assimilated five Terran worlds. The Federation is mandated to protect all of mankind, especially those who are now forced to work and toil for the glory of the Empire. We must liberate those worlds from the corrupt officials who turned their backs on the Federation. Diplomacy cannot accomplish such a thing. If we deploy our marines in orbit then we are sure to make an impression and the Drengin will have no choice but to take us seriously." Bradshaw was calm but he was nearing the end of his patience.

"The Empire has already assured me that so far there have been no other Terran planetary governors who have expressed their desire to join them."

Bradshaw's face turned red, "How naive are you Howard? And how stupid do you think I am. You think I am unaware of the CDF report on the Andoria system? You think I would have left the office of the Prime MAgistrate without making an insurance policy. The CDF may work for the central government, but everything you receive goes through me first."

Anderson stiffened in his seat, "What are you talking about?"

"When I chose you to replace me I thought you would be competent. While your internal decisions have been beneficial to the Federation you fail to grasp that without a solid foreign policy and stern security measures all internal policies are bound to fail. The Civil Defense Force was my creation and rest assured they are loyal to me, as is the Navy."

"Are you threatening me?"

"I'm simply stating facts, though I would of course benefit from your signature on deployment orders I certainly do not need it. The central government needs the Navy not the other way around. As for the CDF..."

Bradshaw reached into his case and brought out a report marked confidential in red on the top.

"The report on the Andoria system. According to our agents placed there the second planet is on the verge of signing a pact of mutual exculisivity with the Drengin Empire." Bradshaw looked straight into Anderson's eyes. "I'm sure you understand what that means. Andoria II will be the sixth planet to fall and Andoria V will surely follow suit. You are failing the Federation Howard, and I cannot have failure in my ranks."

"Your ranks? This is not the Navy, this is the central government and I am in charge of it!" Anderson tried to assert himself before this imposing man.

Bradshaw didn't smile as he got up. "Best of luck to you then Mr. Prime Magistrate. As commander in chief of the armed forces of the Terran Federation and person in charge of assuring the defense of all mankind, I inform you that as of oh seven hundred standard hours last Friday following the UP decision, all available transports and heavy transports were deployed from their bases and sent into strategic positions orbiting a number of Drengin worlds."

"Are you Mad!" Anderson blurted out, "That is an act of war!"

"Assimilating our planets and forcing humans to slave and toil for an alien race is an act war. Doing nothing in the face of such an atrocity should be considered an act of treason!" Bradshaw yelled. "You are not worthy to lead our Federation anymore Howard. You are a blind fool if you think the Drengin will reason diplomatically with you. In forty-eight standard hours I give the order to strike. With or without your signature. As for your political carreer I suggest you prepare you and your party for an election."

Bradshaw picked up his personal effects on the table and walked out on a speechless and nearly defunct Howard Anderson.

TFS Harvard
Fivel action Group
Fivel System
Rear-Admiral Latona Vavilov commanding

Vavilov looked at Nolan but didn't answer his question. He was about to ask again, but a slight shake of the head by Darryl Renges told him he should probably shut up and listen.

"A couple of hours ago I received confirmation that Andoria II has gone over to the other side. As a result there are now millions more human beings who are trapped on a planet whose new governors refuse to allow them to leave. This coupled with the newest UP council decision pushes us with our backs against the wall. The political situation is at an impasse with the Drengin refusing to negotiate."

Renges let out an exasperated sigh "Another world to the Drengin, that's six! Those bastards. It's about time we do something if you ask me."

"I don't recall anyone asking" interrupted Nolan with a smile.

"Shut your face yellow!" replied Renges.

Since their instance of working together to defeat Vavilov in the mock battles they had become less hostile towards each other. Every now and then they threw verbal jabs at one another but it was mostly good natured, something Vavilov was very happy to see. The two were starting to work very well together and had even defeated her on several occassions following the first draw.

Vavilov brought them back to order.

"Helios has detected a number of ships orbiting Fivel V. Our orders are to neutralize all Drengin ships in orbit to make it safe for the transport to begin operations."

"What transport?" asked Nolan.

Again Renges gave him a slight shake of the head and a look that said shut up and listen.

Vavilov continued. "There is a squadron of Drengin fighters and a firgate sized warship. In addition to this there is also a scout ship incapable of space combat and a troop transport. Our secondary goal is to neutralize or track this transport. We cannot allow a single Drengin soldier to escape orbit. The Fivel system is a vital gateway to the Empire and if we gain control of it we will have clear navigation lanes straight into the heart of their territory. Before we can do that however we must also secure the two other Drengin worlds in the system. Our action group will be operating here until the job is done."

At the end of the dinner Vavilov reiterated her confidence in her two captains and raised her glass to victory. After drinking to her toast Renges and Nolan stood and prepared to leave. As they walked down the hall towards the docking bay Renges said to Nolan "I hope you don't get cold feet yellow. There's a difference between training and the real thing."

Nolan shrugged off the comment, but deep inside he could not repress the feeling of anxiety he was feeling. His whole life he had always lived with a certain amount of stress. The stress of making sure he made his cargo runs on time, the stress of managing a ragtag crew, and the stress of keeping his old bucket of bolts the Persephone in one piece. None of those compared with the stress of having to keep himself and his crew alive while trying to destroy an enemy who would should no quarter. Tommorrow promised to be a big day.

24 hours later
Kona
Drengi System
Capital world of the Drengin Empire
Fiefdom of the House of Kona

"Everything has been finalized your highness. The governor has signed the treaty and our agents are already in place for action on Andoria V. Work camps are presently being set up for the resisting population"

The Emperor of the Drengin Empire, the young Torlek Kona, sat on his saphire throne and listened intently to his chief of information. The subterfuge network of the Drengin Empire was the most intricate and important facet of the Empire's way of government. So far they had succesfully influenced and assimilated five Terran worlds, and the minister had just confirmed the sucessfull conversion of Andoria II making it the sixth. The systematic influencing of Terran planetary governors and subsequent assimilation was part of a plan set in motion prior to what the humans called first contact. Drengin probes had been sent out since long before the imperial unification of the Major Houses. The Drengin had been watching. Emperor Kona was more than aware of the Humans' appetite for war and cunning destructive ability, but he had managed to avoid direct conflict for a surprinsingly long time. The Prime magistrate of the Federation was no match for his diplomatic skills. Every time they met Lord Kona had been able to buy himself more and more time.

The puny Humans were so desperate for peace they were willing to sacrifice entire worlds. The Emperor was a shrewd and intelligent patrician of the Drengin race. He had studied long the history of the Humans and had found one particuarly interesting episode during what they called the twentieth century. During the early years there had been a war of incredible magnitude. Death and destrution had been so rampant that following the draconian peace treaty imposed by the victorious powers, peace was to reign. The war to end all wars they called it. Only twenty Earth years later, blind to keep the illusion of peace at all cost, a certain charismatic leader of the defeated country was able to bring his country to within inches of victory by using the lax attitude of the vitorious towards threatening force. Kona intented to bring his people to ultimate vicotry over this Human sub-race regardless of the initial losses he was sure to incur.

At that moment a messenger stormed into the throne room. Kona stared at the intruder as he pushed his way past the guards.

"What is the meaning of this unannounced visit!?" Kona boomed.

The messenger kneeled before his soverereign before standing up tall and announcing in a loud voice

"Following the sixth planetary defection of Andoria II, and the subsequent failure of diplomatic talks regarding the return of Human political prisoners; the Terran Federation formally declares war on the Unified Drengin Empire."

The mesenger allowed this to sink in before continuing

"Terran forces have already engaged our warships and the first battle has been fought over Kupe V. Our forces there forced the humans into committing the entirety of their forces and were able to engage and destroy three full squadrons of fighters before finally accepting a beautiful death in service to the Emperor."

The announcement had a euphoric effect on the court, but all were silent as Lord Kona made his announcement "Let loose the dogs of war! Summon the Skikdas of all Major Houses and bring before me Lord Korath and Lord Vire we have work to do!"

"Long live Lord Kona!!! Long live the Empire!!!"

Weber III

Weber System

Under Drengin control

Human work camp

To the Drengin they were known as trustees. To Derek Ohio and his crew they were traitors. Willing Human collborators who watched and profiteered from the enslavement of the resisting Humans on Weber III. Only a year ago the planet was a bustling colony and an important sstopoever for trade routes to the heart of the Drengin Empire. The colonists worshipped the Federation and worked hard for its continued glory. The people were aware of the enourmous task they had been given in settling the planet, but they had not dissapointed. Ohio had been amongst the very first settlers to arrive on the enourmous Genesis Class colony ship. HE remembered using his skills as a talented worker to quickly put up the first settlement units and had even helped the small Stellar Marine detachment in fighting off the dangerous bugs. The colonists called them bugs while the scientists who were also among the colonists called them Arachnida Fulgencii. Either way they had been bad news and in the end only a flight of Helix-Bs passing low and carpet bombing the prime hive had done the trick.

Those days had been scary to say the least and Ohio could count himself lucky to still be alive, but given the choice to relive the whole ordeal or to stay in the present he had no doubt he would choose to relive it. At least back then he was still free.

"Move it you dirty slug, there's still work to do! Quit your daydreaming and get to it!" A large and hardened Drengin yelled at him. To emphasize his words he crackled his pulse whip onto Ohio's back. The pain made Derek fall to his knees and cringe.

Eight months ago following what everyone was sure were falsified elections, the governor of Weber III had chosen to sign a treaty with the Drengin Empire and forsake the Federation. By doing so he condemned the majority of the colonists into forced labour camps for the Drengin. Now ship after ship of new Drengin settlers were imposing their will on the Human slave population. The Imperial representatives had started by shutting down the Echelon Uplink planetside cutting off all communication with the Federation. Next they had categorized the Humans into groups. Those willing to collaborate and those unwilling. It had taken them a while to suppress the unwilling, but now they were all working for the Empire one way or another whether they wanted to or not.

"I said MOVE IT!" the whip cracked again and this time Ohio dropped the large piece of lumber he was carrying.

Ohio was happy he was only getting whipped by this brute. The Drengin had become increasingly inventive with ways of punishing the Human slaves. He was one of the lucky one to still be allowed to wear a a universal translator. Some of his crew had been recently removed from the work detail to a kanvium mine near the planet's equatorial line,  the hell of all hells people called it. Those same people had been stripped of their UTs making those who didn't speak Drengin completely deaf to the garble of the Drengin language. It might not seem like much but when the beasts were snickering to one another about your condition it was usually best to have an idea of what they were saying.

"By Gorath you dirty little bug I'll squash you here and now if you don't pick that up and keep it moving" to make his statement stick the guard cracked Ohio's back once again with his pulse whip. The pain shot through him and sent a shock to every one of his extremities.

Where you worked and what type of work you did depended on how much the Drengin guards liked you. Ohio and his work crew were under heavy guard at a deforestation site not far from the capital city of Sierra. The Starda skysraper, the pride of joy of the colonists, could be seen due south of their position just over the tip of the trees. The tower had been built in an incredibly short amount of time and had served as the seat of government for Weber III as well as for the planetary representatives of the Combine Corporations. Ohio felt nothing but seething hatred towards those two institutions now. Though he had no proof he knew they had played a hand in turning the planet over to the Empire. The governor had been corrupted into receiving payments  to help initiate the referendum. During the campaign GNN had reported that the NO side was comfortably in advance with 72% of the vote, but then in the last few days the YES had taken the advance and had won the vote by a slim majority of 64%. It doesn't take a genius to understand how much the Combine would profit from a conflict between the two races. Ohio was sure they had played a part.

Ohio bent down and picked up the lumber piece with difficulty. The Drengin weren't really in favour for natural beauty and esthetics. The flowering and exotic forest north of Sierra was being razed to the ground to make way for something large. Derek didn't have a clue what though. All he knew was that with every tree he felled he vowed to take revenge on his cruel masters. The cololnists had always been extra careful to keep the natural beauty of the planet as intact as possible. Many had the cataclysm fresh in mind and all knew about the difficult years on Earth prior to the discovery of cold fusion by Dr. Allison. Natural beauty and the preservation of the planet, the body that sustained their very lives, always held priority in they developped the settlement. The Drengin were throwing all of that out the window.

Ohio took one step forward before receiving another seering whip lash across his back. The Drengin let out a deep and bellowing laugh, "What's wrong human? Keep moving!"

He knew that his position was nearly hopeless. Weber III was not the first planet to defect. Indeed the first had defected years ago and still the Federation had not come to their aid. Ohio could only wonder if someone would come and rescue them or if they would be destined to toil for the Drengin forever. Their had been a strong initial resistance to the takeover, but after only two weeks the colonists were beaten at the hands of the stronger and better armed Imperial forces. The Federation had sent no help. Ohio didn't feel any resentment towards the Terran government. He knew about the complications of governing with multiple facets all vying for more influence and power like the Guild and the Combine. He only hoped the policy of appeasement the Federation was taking with Drengin wouldn't last forever. At one point action had to be taken...at least he hoped.

"I could crush you with my bear hands if I wanted to human." The Drengin had bent down on the pain stricken Ohio and was whispering in his ear. His foul breath seemed to suck out the remaing energy Derek had. "Your sub-race cannot be allowed to continue to exist on equal terms with us when we can do this." At that moment the Drengin took Ohio's head with one hand and began to tighten his grip. Ohio's eyes recoiled inside his head as he tried to stop himself from passing out. Drengin guards enjoyed using passed out slaves for target practice for the snipers in the guard towers who kept watch over the work camp.

The camp itself was heavily guarded. Not only from an interior inssurection, but also from an outside attack. The camp had as many guards as it had workers. The guards all carried large and powerful weapons capable of vaporizing the smaller Humans. Anti-Aircraft batteries also ringed the camp and there were rumours of heavy artillery in the hills to the west pointed at the camp for good measure.

The guard tightened his grip and Ohio could feel his death inching towards him with certainty. Still he fought to stay alive though, refusing to give in to tyranny and oppression just because he was threatened with death. The pain was so great that at one moment he couldn't feel it anymore. His mind transcended the pain and took him someplace safe. Ohio could see his parents standing in a field smiling. "Am I dead" he asked them. He got no answer in return. His father only kept on smiling and pointed towards the sky. As Ohio looked up the pain rushed back and his mind brought him back to reality.

Ohio was on the ground and the guard had let go of his grip. His head ached worse than one can imagine and his back, bloody with whip marks, shot pain through his entire body. He was completely disoriented and could see fire not to mention hear and incredible racket. His confusion was compounded by three loud and consecutive explosions at the North end of the camp. He opened his eyes and looked up at the sky in time to see three aircrafts streak low above the ground and drop what seemed to be bombs. They were indeed bombs as another set of three explosions could be heard. Ohio sat up and looked around. Massive pandemonium was what he saw. Guards attempted to shoot at the low flyign crafts and the AA batteries belched fire as they shot shell after shell of flak into the air. Earth and debris flew into the air as shells and bombs exploded in and around the camp. Ohio could see some of his crewmates lying dead on the ground and some of the guards pumping rounds into the helpless Humans. The pain subsided but was replaced by thunderous explosions and dangerous shrapnel flying above his head. It seemed the rumours about the heavy artillery weren't rumours at all and the Drengin didn't care if they hit slaves or guards.

Derek Ohio got up only to be hit hard in the back by the guard who had been beating him previously. His sharp and large teeth glinted as he smiled and said "How insignificant do you feel Human? knowing your life was worthless?" He raised his gun and pointed at Ohio's head. Derek closed his eyes and tried to imagine the field with his aprents again knowing he would be joining them soon. Ohio heard a small explosion go off and prepared himself for his death.

...

Ohio opened his eyes and saw the guard with half his side blown off. The guard let out a cry that turned his blood to ice. Ohio looked beside him where half a drengin arm still holding a gun was lying and bleeding a purplish blood profusely. Ohio smiled and picked up the gun. The guard fell to his knees his death inching closer and closer as he lost more and more blood. Ohio pointed the gun to what was left of his chest and pulled the trigger putting the guard out of his misery. His sense of satisfaction was short lived as a shell dropped less than twenty feet from him and threw him flat on the ground as the explosion shockwave hit him. Ohio knew he had to get out of the camp if he wanted to stay alive.

He took a quick look around and saw that the North gate had been destroyed in the initial explosions. Many of the guards were still alive and taking potshots at the Human slaves. The remaining slaves still alive were making their way to the North end trying desperately to escape. That's when he heard the most beautiful sound of his entire life.

Terran dropships require powerful and unique engines to be able to hover above the ground and deposit their cargo of hardened stellar marines somewhat gently. The engines use a specific type of ionized gas that let out a cold exhaust therefore not damaging or making the DZ too hot when they approach. It was a fine piece of engineering and it let out a very distinct and particular sound. Ohio looked up and saw another three aircrafts fly towards the hills. He watched them as they each dropped a pair of high explosive bombs and neutralized the artillery pieces. The dropships followed. Two of them landed in the middle of the camp with the sidedoor gunners providing covering fire. Before the dropships even touched the ground troops were already pouring out of them. A couple of them ran towards Ohio who was't too far away. As they got to him they took a knee and two of the three took up defensive positions. Ohio could read the name Matco on the lead marine who said "Are you alright sir!?" Ohio was somewhat taken aback. "Stevens!" yelled Matco "Gauze stat!" Ohio frowned and stared at the stellar marine who simply smiled and pointed at hsi left arm. Ohio looked at it and jumped. there was a piece of shrapnel sticking out and blood had soaked through his shirt.

The marine took hold of Ohio and said "We're evacuating all wounded non-essential personel capable of helping in the liberation of the colony. Stevens will take you back to the dropship. Can you walk sir?" "Ye-Yes" stammered out a dazed Ohio. Only five minutes ago he was being whipped and beaten by an Alien twice his size and now a fellow Human was telling him he was being liberated. He was being given back his freedom. He saw that the Marine was a captain. "Thank you Captain Matco. Bless you."

The marine Stevens grabbed Ohio and pulled him up. "We need to move sir please follow me" What a funny thing to say thought Ohio. Please follow me. As all hell was breaking loose around them and small arms fire crackled like interminable fireworks. They got to the dropship safely and Ohio could see some of his fellow liberated slaves far more wounded than he. Ohio got on and turned to the marine "What about you?" The marine responded "We don't leave until the job is done." And with that he turned and headed straight into the hell of war.

Great post Admiral and I must say I have no idea so I guess I'm not a true sci-fi fan. The thing it made me think of was Starship Troopers but pretty sure there is no charachter like Ohio in it...hmmmm

HAPPY CANADA DAY FOLKS!!!

ok since no one was able to guess that Derek Ohio is loosely based on the legendary Duncan Idaho from Frank Herbert's Dune I will shake my head in shame. Does this actually means that NO ONE here has read the amazing saga? or at least the first book. If not I suggest you run, bike, speed, or fly to your nearest library or book store and purchasae a copy of DUNE. Easily one of the most fascinating science fiction universe after star wars. A lot of stuff in this AAR has been influenced by Dune's universe.

No karma for you!

cheers and dont forget to hug a canadian today!

Haha I have read it but it was about 30 years ago so my memory is hazy-I know who you mean now though.  Happy Canada Day mr :D

fellas,

Sorry for the continued delay in posting but Im having trouble writing it up. My philosophy is to try and post as regularly as possible but to not let the pace of the updates hinder the quality of the post. Im not saying my AAR is flawless and my posts perfect, but I hate to rush a post and thren re-read it only to realize I could have added a couple of elements to make it better. Will be postng this week I promise. Iève got a ton of work to do on the house but its shitty weather outside this week so... Gaming and AAR will take priority lol.

Cheers

Fellas!

as promised here is the next update. I hope you enjoy and again I apologize for the delay. Bear in mind however that it is summer and that as teh days get longer and the sun stays on more my  free time for AARing decreases linearly (is that even a word) anyways as a direct funtion or something like that. Fuck grade ten math and what i remember of it. ok enough of this blabber. TO THE AAR!

Earth

Sol System

Capital world of the Federation

Commodore Alan Bradshaw put the report down and rubbed his eyes free of the drowsyness that threatened to take him over. The past month had truly tested his limits, both physical and mental. His organizational skills had stood the test but every day brought new challenges. Every ship of the Fleet had to be in the right place at the right time, and as Commander in Chief it was his job to make sure of that. He had trustworthy subordinates and a will of steel, but an interstellar war was something never before experienced in the history of mankind and it was job to lead it to victory.

In the past month every single primary objective had been met and Terran forces advanced in all sectors. Other than the pyrrhic victory over Kupe V in which the Federation had lost three out of four wings of a squadron of Helix-Bs, the first phase of the war with the Drengin Empire was a resounding success. Terran Stellar Marines had made succesfull planet falls on nine planets and were currently in the process of occupying them and reorganizing the local governments. There had been one instance in which a full transport load of marine was anihilated when an ion storm deviated the trajectory of the dropships. The entirety of the four marine divisions crash landed in close proximity to the capital world of the planet, the most heavily guarded area. The battle lasted for two full days until finally, exhausted, surrounded, and out of ammunition they surrendered to the Imperial garrison. The remaining Stellar marines were paraded through the streets of the capital in chains and bind-locks while the local population threw garbarge at them. They were herded into the center square and every last one of them was executed publicly. The Drengin did not show mercy.

Bradshaw had other things on his mind however. The internal situation of the federation was dire. Though Anderson had in the end agreed to co-sign the deployment orders of the Fleet his political pull was deeply weakened. Many of his own ministers had already resigned and the vision of a strong central government in charge of weak satellite planets was beginning to wither away. Bradshaw slumped into his chair and picked up a book lying on his table. He always knew he could find solace in the book, and he needed it now more than ever. Other than massive political turmoil there were other concerns gnawing at the Federation, and at the very survival of mankind. The coffers of the Federation were empty. Less than empty to be exact. The Federation was in debt for the fist time since its existence. The vast amount of capital needed for the expansion of the Galactic navy had exceeded the income for too long and now they found themselves in debt.

Regarding the Navy two new ships were already in production. The brains at Gray Rock had found a replacement for the Harvard Class. The new Sparrow class had twice the speed and range as the Harvard while carrying the exact same weapons and defense platforms. The second class was named after a very pleasant city before the cataclysm. The Halifax Class was now the heaviest ship in the Fleet bristling with missile banks and three times as heavy as the Harvard because of its thick armour. The Halifax could not support atmospheric flight while the Sparrow, with its long wingspan like the Harvard, was more than capable of doing so. This would increase the eficiency of stellar marine operations with heavy air support.

Bradshaw turned his thoughts away from the latest specs of his new ships and continued to thumb the book. He faced a dilemma at the moment even though the book's author was clear about what to do in such a situation. Bradshaw had already devoted so much of his life to Plato's teachings and Plato was clear. In times such as this, when the very fabric of the Federation was unravelling, it was the leader's duty to do something many people thought to be immoral. To lie. To lie for the good of the population. Bradshaw cleared his head and began to think of the facts. The Federation was broke, the Federation lacked an able leader to control the central government and more importantly the colonies. The Federation had lost another planet to the Drengin on the morrow of the declaration of war. Andoria II had defected and the majority of its Human population was now being used as slaves. Bradshaw then looked at the positive facts. The Federation had lost relatively few forces, material, and lives. The Federation was advancing on all fronts. The Federation had superior ships and continued to produce even more powerful ones to stay on top.

The Commodore of the Terran Federation Galactic Navy sighed and closed his eyes. He knew that if information leaked to GNN about the empty coffers his master plan would be ruined. The population would demand an end to hostilities and a peace treaty. Such a thing would be suicidal for the continued free existence of mankind. He knew that with one big push the navy would put and end to the Drengin Empire. The latest situational reports indicated that Navy vessels were less than one moth away from the Imperial capital of Kona. With Federation war vessels in low orbit above their homeworld, the Drengin would have no choice but to negotiate a settlement on terms dictated by Humans. For now though, he would be forced to lie.

TFS Tripoli

Outskirts of Fivel System

Fivel System

Captain Nolan Commanding

"Davai Captain Nolan!" and with that the comm channel turned off and Vavilov's image disappeared.

Nolan turned to his helm officer "Increase to full impulse and keep on that fat bitche's tail."

The Tripoli, in conjunction with the Fivel action Group, had been operating in the Fivel System for the past month. They had engaged two Drengin warships and one Drengin Heavy fighter squadron. Their success rate was 100% and they had suffered absolutely no casualties and no serious damage. The first engagements had taken place over Fivel II. A Drengin corvette had charged straight at the Action Group only to be taught a deadly lesson of such a foolish action. The Tehran had obliterated the corvette, and her captain, Darryl Renges, hadn't stopped reminding Nolan about it. A terran transport had then taken low orbit over the planet and had begun dropship operations. The planet was now under Federation occupation.

"Reaching full speed sir" Nolan's helm announced.

After Dropship operations had begun a Drengin frigate had appeared on the far side of the moon and had engaged the Terran transport. The tehran, being the closest ship available had engaged the larger Drengin ship and with support from the Harvard, had managed to destroy the target. Rear-Admiral Vavilov had written up a reccomendation to navy HQ at Pearson NS for a platinum star for Capatain Darryl Renges following that brave episode.

"We're within reach sir" Nolan's tactical officer, his good friend Dee, announced

After the Frigate there was the squadron of heavy fighters. They had been no more than an intensive round of target practice. With the two gunships and the full power of the Harvard's weapon banks the Action Group was able to launch a total of sixty AI guidance missiles twice every minute. The Drengin squadron, though brave and able, hadn't stood a chance against the full weight of the action group's firepower. Vavilov had congratulated both Nolan and Renges on jobs well done but so far the action group hadn't been able to track down their all important secondary objective; the Drengin troop transport. Until now.

"Confirm target range and commence nuclear weapon activation. Helios!" Nolan barked authoritatively.

The computer mind chimed in "Captain Nolan"

"Nuclear Activation on the Alpha weapon. zero zero one niner mike charlie six."

The AI chimed again "Nuclear Activation complete. The weapon is armed."

Since the cataclysm the use of nuclear wepaons was something of a controversy. There existed many groups who demanded the absolute abolishment and destruction of the WMDs but the military and political masterminds still could not deny their power and usefulness. There existed no better deterrent than a couple of nukes, and no better way to destroy an enemy.

Nolan had never felt so anxious. His life had been full of anxious moments within the Guild, but up until this past month he had never actually been in combat. He had never been in a situation in which his life was in immediate danger due to someone actually trying to kill him. In combat there is no time to hesitate, it's all about you and the man next to you. He looked around the small bridge of his Navy gunship Tripoli and he knew he could not let these men and women down, no matter what that meant for the enemy. In this case the use of a nuclear weapon had been authorized to destroy the behemoth Drengin troop transport. he fact was that Nolan had been completely unaware that his ship carried a nuke. Safety protocol demanded that certain ship captains be kept in the dark concerning whether or not their ship carried a nuclear weapon. This was to ensure that none of these devasting bombs could be stolen.

The Navy had established a tight cordon around Drengin systems known, or thought, to contain enemy troop transports. Though they had been on the lookout for the transport located in Fivel they hadn't managed to track it down and it had managed to slip through their sensor nets. The Tripoli had caught up to it as it was heaeding straight into Federation space. A full transport load of Drengin troops ready to ravage any Federation planet it chose. It was Nolan's job to make sure the ship was entirely destroyed.

"Open a channel with the Harvard and let the Rear-Admiral in on our situation." Nolan told his comm officer.

I am the bringer of death. Nolan attempted to control his breathing. He had seen the full power of a thermonuclear hydrogen bomb and had been appalled that man could produce such a thing.

"The Rear-Admiral acknowledges and tells us to continue as planned." the comm officer replied

Nolan sat in his chair and looked at his flat viewer. The large Drengin ship was clearly visible. Aboard it was approximately 50 000 warriors who had no idea of the doom that awaited them. The Tripoli's bridge was quiet and everyone stared at Nolan, awaiting the orders he was sure to give. He had a duty to protect the loyal citizens of the Federation. His hand quivered a bit. Fifty thousand souls incinerated in a second. Nolan attempted to clear his mind and yet he still hesitated. He had never actually killed anyone. He knew that at some point during the skirmish with the Drengin fighters his missiles must have hit some targets, but this was different. He knew that being part of the Galactic navy meant being used as a weapon to kill the enemy. The soldiers aboard that ship also had a duty, but no means to defend themselves. However, given the chance to do so they would bring havoc and destruction to their enemies. Fellow Humans like Nolan.

"Release clamp locks and fire on my mark."

"Aye sir"

"3. 2. 1 Mark"

"Weapon away."

Nolan continued to watch his flatviewer and watched as a single plume of smoke raced towards the enemy ship. The most powerful weapon created by man. The infinite power of the atom.

"Ensure safe distance and take evasive action if necessary."

The Tripoli did a 180 degree turn and fired it's afterburners to reverse its current trajectory.

"Prepare to boost power to EMP defense." All Navy ships had been built to withstand the electro magnetic pulse of a nuclear explosion. Paradoxically, to make sure the systems were properly defended one had to boost as much available power to it depending on the force of the EMP blast. Using hard coded wiring a Navy ship with full power attributed to the defense system could withstand the strongest of EMP blasts.

Nolan continued to watch the screen. "Boost power!" The lights on the bridge dimmed and a loud humming noise could be heard as all electronics aboard were hard coded.

A blinding flash filled Nolan's screen as the weapon detonated upon impact. The shockwave reached the Tripoli and shook it violently. As it passed and things returned to normal Nolan looked at his screen one last time. Where there was once a large ship and 50 000 souls there was now three large piceces of a ship still exploding and millions of fiery fragments shooting out in every direction. Nolan's hand stopped quivering. He had a duty, and it just so happned that he had been on the winning side this time. He dreaded the day the opposite would be true.
