Pragmatism vs. Intellectualism
I see how it is. ![]()
I question your assumption that those who study business aren't motivated by intellectualism. There is no one so dogmatic as your average Economics student, who often subscribes to a couple of similar theories and then maintains an intellectual purity even the most faithful priest could envy.
You're really not so different. Your vocation is unusual, but its intensity and impracticality isn't necessarily so. The only thing that makes Spanish literature studies special is its perception by the wider world. Just as literature was considered essential in the beforetime, it will be considered essential again I'm sure. You're just out of fashion.
In my University, the business department and the economics department are far, far removed. I still have yet to have a business major adequately explain just what the hell they're learning other than "stuff to help in business". The Economics majors are mostly as you describe them, but the Business majors aren't like that.
Wait and see what happens during the next round of budget cuts. If your university is like most in this country, its heading toward serious cut backs.
Our Liberal Arts Department makes more money than any other department on campus....BUT the dean and crew aren't Liberal Arts fans.....Science is their first love...so they're cutting the Liberal Arts Dept, even though it makes more $ than all the other depts together....
Administrative discretion is ALWAYS biased because its made by humans.
You just need to find a university whose administration is biased in your favor.
What better reasons exist, I don't know. There are so many people in the world who want degrees in business or IT or administration. Those who want to study the classics, who want to expand human intellectualism further need to be equally catered for, though. But when it comes down to it, its always about money, damn it all.
You're not alone in being different. I'm an anime and video game fan who loves to read, find out everything I can about everything (in other words what you're doing with your college), who plans on learning tons of things I'll never use just so I have the knowledge. Now if only I had money.
THE GUY WHO DOESN'T READ VONNEGUET AND CRITICIZES HIM... I SURE WANT TO TAKE YOUR OPINIONS ON COLLEGE... OR ANYTHING FOR THAT MATTER.
Go back to THe Beginning......
Mmm, I'm reminded of the saying...those who cannot be teachers, are administrators.
