Custom flag/symbol

If this has already been addressed - sorry!

You know how your units in these type of games usually have a little symbol to designate who they belong to, which may or may not be the civilizations flag? Well I think it would be very cool if they let you design your own. Even in multiplayer, how long would it take to send everyone a little packet with each civ's flag(s) and/or symbol(s).

Galciv2 provided you with lots of choices, but there is still nothing quite like having your own flag that you designed yourself. Is this already planned? (I'll admit, the thought came to me while looking at the very cool "Elemental Empires" thread.)

There was a somewhat similar thread, quite a while back. It's understandably hard to find, since there's no search function.

Needless to say, I definately support the motion.

Heraldry lets you describe coats of arms quite easily. I know the French terms only but with it wouldn't be very difficult to make a program that lets you change metals, furs and enamels (colors) or pick various furniture you want to put on your coat of arms.

Still, it would be easier to have a library of these, which reference images (png, tga, jpg, whatever) and create your own coats using a dedicated program.
Using my examples, it'd really "just" be a matter of doing the seperate items in the coats of arms. The wings, the draping, the halbers, the weapons, the shields, the symbols, etc, etc, all as proper .png's. Then make the program apply the proper shading and shadows, and bam, we have a new coat of arms.

I don't imagine that it'd be too hard to do. It'd be time-consuming, for sure, though.
I'd LOVE a heraldry-maker. A kind of GalCiv2-Shipyard-like chop-shop, where you make your own flag and coat of arms. It'd add considerable diversity to the game, without having immersion-breaking, badly fingerpainted mod-symbols along with the superb (to be sure) symbols.

Ahaha, I just spent 10 minutes trying to find that thread to post a link here... But by the time I found it you had beat me to it already, Luckmann. Curses!

I'm also in favor of this idea.

Spartan started a good thread on heraldry during the first few days the forum was live, but the subject is still well worth discussing, not least because we have more folks reading and posting now than we did last November.

I still very much like the idea of a heraldry tool as part of the base game. I like it so much I'd probably pay a few bucks extra if the code needed to be done as a 'mini-expansion' to justify the dev time.

Edit re searching for old stuff -- it is very easy to do at any good search web site; just type your basic search, e.g. custom flag, and follow it with site:forums.elementalgame.com . That will narrow your search results to the domain name for the forums. If your favorite search engine doesn't support site:, they don't deserve your affection.

We have some technologies in the works that should make this pretty easy to implement.

I'll keep you posted.

yay for boogie bac's responce

Anyway, to add is I really liked the Sins of a Solar empire way.   Where there were a bunch of symbols and you could pick your colors.   The only problem is you only got 1 color, where it should be more like a symbol with at least 2 or 3 colors and you get to pick from that.   (I was jellous of the nuetral factions because they had colorful and interesting icons)

I'm trying to remember that a stray comment isn't confirmation, but I just got all giddy.

Yay.

I thought we had this chat some time ago and were waiting for SD input. Anyway, I'm all for a custom heraldry system to be sure.

Spartan, it looks like you haven't read this thread carefully. We just got SD input:
