Having problems with Fences? Help us by submitting your diagnostics info

Available in v0.96 beta, updated 1/25/09

Having problems with explorer crashing? The Fences settings dialog crashing? Context menus not showing up properly? They're rare & far inbetween, but if this is you, please take the time to send in your diagnostics information.

In the latest build up on Impulse I've added some debug information catching / crash logging.

First: Update your copy of Fences to the v0.96 beta. Make sure you have "Show pre-release versions" checked in Impulse, and install it / reboot. From there, reproduce the problem you were having

Next: head to the Fences settings dialog. On the about page, there's now a button "Debug Info" ; give it a click. If you can't get the dialog open at all, go there directly by heading to "%appdata%\Stardock\Fences\TroubleshootingLog\". Email the file shown at that location ("fences_debug_info.txt"), along with a description of your problem and something along the lines of "Fences Debug Info" in the subject, to "fencesbeta" (at stardock).

Thanks, and happy testing!

One machine has the new version the other was not updated.

Both machines worked fine and then a few days ago both developed the problems as described above.

Do you think it is an install issue.

Also, if I uninstall fences and then reinstall I assume I will lose all the fences that were set up. True?

Thanks

Arnold

Hi Arnold,

Nope, you shouldn't lose your settings ; during the uninstall it asks whether or not to erase your settings, just say no. If you'd like to be safer, you can make a snapshot and then backup your folder at "%appdata%\Stardock\Fences" to back-up your snapshots. (put that into the run dialog)

I have tried to update ver 0.98(not sure) to ver. 0.99 hundreds times, but it was unable to do it popping errors....

The error message says 'unable to copy ~~~ files from ~~~~ where a temporary folder of my local settings'.

So, I tried to install .NET framework 2.0 -> failed since 2.0 service pack and 3.0 and 3.5 are already installed on my computer.

Also, I tried to install IMPULSE -> but also fail with the same error message of Fences.

I unstalled Fences ver0.98 hopping it helps... but, NO!

So, now I cannot even reinstall Fences ver 0.98.

Hence... I cannot use it anymore...

Someone mentioned this earlier but i am also experiencing it.

I have been using fences since the previous release. I upgraded to the latest version and the problem is still there.

I run dual monitors. I have monitor 1 on the left and monitor 2 on the right. My main screen is on the right (monitor 2). When i have fences disabled and download a file to the desktop it puts it on the left side of monitor 2 (as expected). With fences enabled it puts the file on the left side of monitor 1. It doesnt seem to know the windows "this is my main monitor" setting.
