Industrial Sector = no thanks?

Is there any reason to actually upgrade your Manufacturing Centers to Industrial Sector in TA?  MC is 10mp for 6bc and IS is 12mp for 10bc, so you get a 20% manufacturing increase for a 67% cost increase...

That's a real hit to your economy for a small benefit, i rather build a quantum power plant on my production planets.

Still that way i miss the last upgrade for my mining starbases. I even downgrade IS to MC when i conquer a planet...

I hate it when i grab the IS tech from an invasion and every planet starts upgrading, on big maps with lots of colonies that can be pretty annoying.

You could just do what the rest of us do and disable auto-upgrade on a planet when you colonize/flip/invade it...

But, yes, apart from very rare circumstances, industrial sector isn't worth building (even more so than it wasn't in DA, and even more so than it wasn't in DL).

From my perspective personally it's not so much about the maintenance but about the cost-industrial sectors are 400BC while manufacturing centers are a mere 150BC.

It can be worth it if you have a planet with a large ship bonus, either through colonizaition event or super project, a large production bonus or a 700x bonus square.  Other than that, no.  I don't think they're worth it.  Still a needed tech for the resource extraction module however.

I.S. is worth it on 300% tiles.  Sometimes on 100% tiles, if you have the money.  You multiply that by Quantum PP, Manu Capital, Doomsday Generator, ethical bonuses, and econ starbases, it can be worth it if you have the money.

Are you aware of the "Newest", "Old", and "All" tabs up there in the Social Improvements screen?   There is no reason you can't build MC's after you have IS researched.  Just don't have that "Newest" tab selected.   Getting I.S. by accident should never be a curse.

Except in DL.  ;)

Granted, we're discussing TA, but it's worth noting.

I might be the exception, but I find Industrial Sectors worthwhile for a limited time.  The operative phrase being " a limited time".  I usually like to build my ships rather than buy them to cut down on the tedium while I'm expanding.

There's a formula that I use, depending on the game.  Mostly, it involves building or buying 5 to 11 Industrial Sectors per planet, depending on the PQ and the various bonuses.  It also depends on the location of the planet and the type of ship I'm building there.  I usually build 3 to 4 different types of ship at any given time until the final production year, when I'll cut down to 1 or 2 types.

There's a breakpoint that varies from game to game where I'll overbuild all manufacturing capabilities with economic buildings.  Believe me, I know the gut tightening feeling you get when you build a Stock Market over a 700% Manufacturing or Research bonus tile.

Still, there's a balance that must be maintained from the beginning.  Go too far in one direction and the AI will spank you.

Here's hoping the techs are on separate branches in GC3. They seem qualitatively different to me in story terms, and it'd be an interesting emphasis chioce to have in the game. I've had some maps where, especially in mid game, the bonuses from my resource mines were far more important to my overall strength than any any gain I might get from improving my factory tiles.

I will be the second exception.

I build them because I acctually can afford to do so.

Most of my games I am making Millions of BC's per turn.

Yes Millions. You have read this correctley.

So in other words, there is no big economic hit for me due to that 60-something% cost increase from manufacturing centers.

My new record for per turn income is 12 Million BC's (No I'm Not Cheating).

It is possible. Mostly thanks to an Economic Boom Mega-Event (I forget what it's really called). That and a whole bunch of Economic Resources, Treaties, and Bonuses.

However I will acctually start using older techs instead of new ones, just to mix it up and see what I get from that. Maybe there is even a way to make 50 Million BC's per turn without economic bonuses of any sort. It's just that no one (exept maybe the developers) has found out about it yet. And if they have, they're not sharing.

Untill I become a Gal Civ 2 Legend........

It's acctually quite simple once you get the hang of it.

Just go check out my All Economy Strategy post.

It clears things up somewhat, and there are some very good replies on there as well.

Check it out.

I think I'll hyperlink it to.
