Nobb: Where are the ships?

Is it necessary to design a new ship to take advantage of new technologies? I though when I discovered new military techs, I would see new ships in the shipyard to build, but no matter how much I research, all I see is wimpy 'Defender' - unless I modify it with some new weapons, etc. and call it something else. Is this the only way to build more advanced ships? As you can guess, I'm not much into ship design... Thank.

The later TA patches completely removed the pre-built ships, as they were ALWAYS inferior to custom designed ships. However, you now can let the AI automatically design ships for you.

In the option menu, enable the auto-designer. You can now use the shipyard to tell the AI to focus on certain aspects during design, as it will redesign ships in regular intervalls.

sorry pndrev, but I am playing DA, not TA. Does DA also have an auto-designer? I could't locate it. Thanks again.

Hm. In DA, there are multiple prerequisites for the pre-built ships. You might not only need new weapons, but engines, sensors, miniaturisation, ...

Also, those predesigned ships simply are inferior, that's why they got cut in TA. If you don't want to spend much time in the designer, you can always just double-click the components and they will get added in a more or less sensible place.
