Available modules for a starbase

Is there any ingame way to find out what modules are available for a given starbase? I know the game knows the amount, because it tells me on the map. And I can find out which ones are already installed. I just can't find which ones are available without sending out a constructor to upgrade it.

Well, the starbase modules are listed on the research screen's tech tree- you can simply poke around there to see what you have available.  It'll get to be second nature after a little experience.  Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any other methods beyond that one and what you've already listed.

I don't know if this will work and even if it does I'm not sure how much help this will be but the following is a table of all Starbases Modules, their effect, what preceding modules are required (if any) and any techs required.

Note that this information is pretty old but I do believe that the bulk of it still applies and is accurate. In any case caveat emptor.

Thanks all, especially Mumblefratz for your elaborate answer. It's a pity there's no in-game way to get this inforamtion. It's one  of those things that make this game uneccesarily harder, because this way it forces people to connect open knowledge from different screens that should be available to you in an obvious place. Well, it's a minor quible anyway.

Thanks again!

What do starbases do? I had some around a few planets pretty well equipped and the enemy still invaded teh planet without the starbase firing a shot. WTF!! What good are they?

Military starbases, I take it?  They don't do anything on their own- you need ships in their area of effect.  Friendly ships will get various enhancements, enemy ships can be slowed down slightly.  If you want to defend a planet, you'll need some ships in orbit.  Just don't confuse the ship assist modules with the starbase fortification modules, as the former will grant bonuses, while the latter will just make your starbase a very expensive decoration.

The main starbase used near planets will usually be of the Economy type- they add a percentage on to the production and research of all planets in their area of effect.  Like all starbases, their area effects stack, so you can get some absolutely ludicrous enhancement levels going.  I use them for my main research and production planets- several thousand units per turn is entirely possible.

Fixed.  :P

But, there's no way to force your enemy to fight your starbases.

I find that the AI will put a lot of energy into going after star bases, especially resource bases. I once had a superior AI military destroyed when it came after a star base defended by one of my only fleets. One by one the enemy fleets attacked and were killed. I was able to replace my losses (1 ship at a time) faster than they could attack. Soon they had nothing left to attack with. I gave my monitor the finger and invaded that AI.

Captain Yar. Your tactic is good fun and very satsifying.

I slight variation : If I am attacked by two civs, it is fun to plonk a well developed military star base in thier territory with a fleet in attendence, then let them bang their heads on it while I set about the other civ.
