Profile Pic

I was trying to change the pic on my profile... is it called an Avatar? :S

Anyway. it says that its too big. What can i do to get it smaller? I tried to trim it in "paint" but that didn't help. How does everyone else get full pics? I was gonna give the Yar's Revenge dude a rest for a while. I gotta go play that game sometime.

anyway, any help will be appreciated.

I tried to trim it in "paint"

Use the Image-->Stretch/Skew to "stretch" it to a lower size-numbers lower than 100 will make it smaller, as it's a percentage.

This will lower the quality of the image, but without knowing what size image you're trying to use in the first place, and therefore how much it needs to be shrunk, it's the best I can suggest.

The other possibility is that the file size is too large-in which case I would suggest converting it from bmp (which it probably is) to either .jpg or .png.  Paint can do the former, although I've had issues with its conversion, and Irfanview can do the former, the latter, and more (plus, it's free).

I'm actually not positive if the avatar function supports .bmp as I never tested that, but it's something to look at.  You don't specify what extension you're using.

Hey, you could be in my boat, and be outright unable to upload any pics.  My dang Flash version is out of date, and Adobe adamantly refuses to give me an upgrade because my OS might not like it, so this forum is out.  The metaverse uploader at least runs, but then hangs every time I try and submit something.

What browser are you using?  What version of Flash are you running?

FF 2.0.0.20/IE 6.0.2800.1106.  I'm aware of FF's incompatibility with the forum uploader.  Yes, they're outdated, but my OS is Win98SE and neither one has further upgrades under it.  As for Flash, it's at 9.0.151.0, which is about ->||<- that close to what the forum uploader requires.  All I need to do to fix everything is build myself a new box, one of these days, with some technology that isn't a decade old.

I guess you could say that my Purchase Procrastination +300% stat certainly saves me credits, but someday I'll have to upgrade this Basic Lab to a Discovery Sphere

but my OS is Win98SE

Ah.

Out of curiosity, what hardware are you running?

That's the funny thing, my hardware is actually halfway decent thanks to a lot of scrounging and a few choice buys.  Soyo SY-KT500 Dragon Plus 2.0 motherboard, Mad Dog 550W power supply, AMD Athlon 2.4GHz, NVIDIA GeForce FX5500, 512MB DDR RAM, Maxtor 55GB GD, and a boatload of almost-current I/O equipment I snagged from friends who were upgrading.  GCII runs beautifully on it.  It's also surprisingly stable for a system that has some hardware half a decade old, and software nearly a full decade old.  I'm going to miss the thing once I finally need to replace it.

So why exactly are you running 98SE, again?

I've run XP on less.  (900MHZ Thunderbird, 256MB 133MHZ SDRAM, 32MB TNT2 M64...)
