state demographics

every state seems to be either a swing state or conservative

Every time I play as a democrat, I have to fight with all my strength to win extremely liberal states like California, Massachusettes, Connecticut, Vermont, Maine, Washington, Oregon, Rhode Island, Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, Hawaii, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, as well as moderate left-wing states like New Mexico, Iowa, and Pennsylvania. Also, I usually find that after being down in the polls to the very end in West Virginia as a democrat, I wind up winning, even though it's a republican state, and it is almost impossible to win in usually competitive, yet right-wing states like Missouri, Nevada, Arizona, and Colorado. This makes the game frustratingly difficult and annoying, especially when trying to spend time and resources on critical swing-states like Florida and Ohio. This started happening since I got to Lincoln in campaign mode and got much worse when I reached George Washington. Does it have something to do with the difficulty of those candidates. Please respond!

Its just how the game is made.  You can try to get LOTS of endorcements early and solidify your base.  then hit um with a few TV ads to seal the deal.  but an easy way to beat Washington in campaign mode does not exist.  if you look at the bottom of the screen when you are starting a campaign mode youll see that as you beat easy guys like Nixon and Grant that the difficulty rises to painful with Washington.

For funzies.  Try being McGovern and fight nixon on the hardest difficulty.  Or be Carter or mondale and fight Reagan on the hard difficulties.  its tough.  Re-Live our liberal catastropys.

but on the bright side when you finish the dem campaign you get to use washington for your republican.  Even on the tough difficulties all the dems are easy to beat with the father of the nation.  Even Jefferson.  My barack had loads of trouble against Reagan and Washington.  but thats part of the fun!

and as an aside,

you have to get into states like colorado and virginia early to win them.  set up shop and ads.  Just like in the real election.  ive done the barack Vrs. mccain and got all but two identical to the real results.  hawii and west virginia being the jerks and flipping uncharacteristicly.  Your right, they used voter registration to use the trends for west virginia.  they do vote for two very old dem senators every year like clockwork. and the very old voter base is still registered as Dems alot.  but for prez theyve been very Rep friendly lately.
