As of the last few years dating shows have been amazingly popular. There are the "classy" ones, such as The Bachelor/Bachelorette, and the trashy ones, like The Fifth Wheel and Elimidate. Well, I couldn't fall asleep one night, so in the interest of allowing my wife to sleep in peace, I left our bedroom and proceeded to watch TV in the living room. I flipped on the TV and reached the WB, where they were airing an episode of Elimidate. I didn't pay much attention to the show, but the catfighting women had me chuckling a bit. About halfway through the episode, the male contestant asked the remaining women why he should pick them. One of the girls remarked that he should pick her because "she's crazy!"
What the hell? What the hell does that mean? Since when did being "crazy" become a good thing? What exactly do they mean by "crazy?" Growing up in Chicago I came across crazy people all the time. I used to date a woman in my late teens who seemed very respectable, very sweet. It turned out she was crazy. She was about as obsessive a person as I'd ever seen. She might as well have been walking up and down the streets of the South Loop muttering incoherant phrases and screaming profanities at unsuspecting tourists. So what did this girl mean by "crazy?" I'll never know, because that was basically all she said on the matter.
I don't think of myself as an old geezer yet. I'm only in my mid-30's. But (here I go) in my day and among my crowd, we didn't look upon craziness as being worthy of respect or as anything desireable. Maybe it's because at the time the overblown AIDS scare was big on the conscience. Maybe now the feminists have triumphed. I guess it's empowering for women to fuck any man they want, especially the most predatory and low-lifed fuckers, get knocked up and diseased young, and then bitch at the men for being chauvanist pigs (and absolving themselves of any blame in the process). Look, I have no respect for a man who treats a woman like shit, but I have equally no respect for any woman that migrates to these men like Canada Geese heading south.
If I were the father of any of these contestants, I'd be embarrassed beyond belief. I'm glad to have found a woman who is the antithesis of these tv specimen, and I seriously will do everything in my power to ensure that my daughter does not end up like them.
