Changes concerning modding in Entrenchment

So modding and hardcodes has been a rather hot issue recently, and I figured why not start a thread to detail all the modding-related changes Entrenchment can bring. Anyone's welcome to add to the list as you notice things.

What I noticed:

- The new cap for number of squadrons on carriers is now 4.

- Ships can now have 5 abilities. Capitals still have the upgrade button on the UI that covers up the slot, but all the other ships are fair game.

- Research can change ship/building mesh appearance. Each entity file now has a listing of its mesh stages and what triggers them. Ships/turrets can use RESEARCHSUBJECTs, and Starbase entities can use their own upgrade triggers.

- Weapons can now be tied to research for unlocking purposes. For example you can have a ship with 2 weapons, but until you research a specific tech only one weapon can fire.

Perhaps an ability somehow triggered by the Death Star?

That to me looks like the entire object mesh is being swapped rather than the missile and railgun being added to the TEC Orbital Defense Gun.
If that's the case, might it be possible to change a planet's mesh in game, too? So we can have things like the Death Star that actually destroy a planet?

That wouldn't work.  A Terran planet that got blown up would still have Terran planet stats, even though it looks like and asteroids belt.  The Death Star needs entity swaps to be able to be done in-game for that to happen.

Then how about if it switchs the mesh with an astroid belt, then makes it uncolonizable, so it doesn't matter what it's stats are?

AFAIK, it would say "Uncolonizable due to bombardment radiation." for the Death Starred planet.  While it would work, the lols inherent in a statement like that for a completely destroyed world are too numerous to count.

Can someone with Entrenchment please post the particle files before I turn into a parrot :(O

I'll promise to look into the concept of destructable planets, its of interest to me as well as Babylon 5 has two planet killer class vessels to consider. I do have some practical ideas already if the Star Wars boyz want to work together on this...

why is everyone all excited about mines you can do that now anyways but shh i wont tell how you got to figure it out...or ask me i probably would tell

Because Entrenchment mines actually have some pretty neat things about them that you can't do without.

I'll try to convert them for you. I should have them later today, unless something goes wrong or someone beats me to it.

what neat things can these mines do that you cant make now and let me explain how i made mines for my upcoming mod.

use a modifed version of the final attack ability so that it auto attacks anything in range and reduce range. give that ability to a frigite entity. modify that frigite entity to have a max speed of zero and change its mesh and effects to something apropriate. then copy and modify a drop ability like the sova carriers drop missle batteries or somethin so that it drops the modified entity you made. now you can give that ability to any ship you want and it will drop mines. also you can modify the buff that finaly attack places to make mines do other attacks like freeze enemies or take out thier shields stuff like that.

I should also mention the nice thing about doing it this way is you can give the mines a supply cost so the AI doesnt make 50 million of them and break the game

but anyways yeah i know enchrenchment will have some cool things but not everyone will get it and this is a way to for people without it have them

And for all that, your mines are still just counted as frigates so anything can be done to them. Entrenchment mines can have their own entity type (SpaceMine) so you can restrict ability usage to target only mines, or to exclude mines. And since they're an entity, you can still stick a bunch of abilities on it.

but anyways yeah i know enchrenchment will have some cool things but not everyone will get it and this is a way to for people without it have them

Sure. But saying "why is everyone so excited about Entrenchment mines, you can do them now!" is like saying "Why is everyone excited about the brand new car, I can have your horse cart!"

actualy i said why is everyone so excited about mines so my statement was correct i didnt specify entrenchment mines and if you want to make it a bit harder you can also use a squad entity instead of a frigite they will be harder to hit. anyone that can hit a moving fighter can hit a mine anyways. though i have made 1 mine that actualy phases out till it detonates so cant hit that one
