Lip Synchgate continues: SNL's Michaels denies knowledge

Claims that he was unaware of Simpson lip synching before the incident

As has been reported by both me and a lot of other media sources earlier, CBS/60 Minutes just happened to be at the SNL set the week of the Ashlee Simpson lip synching gaffe, and in the aftermath of the incident, Leslie Stahl interviewed the force behind Saturday Night Live, Lorne Michaels.

After some rather jovial questions about the history of the show, and how he was perceived by some who had left the show, he was asked the questions we all wanted to know about.

First he was asked whether he knew that Ashlee Simpson was going to lip synch, which he said he didn't... after they had just shown footage of him in the control room as it happened, which to me would seem to be one of the few areas of the studio that would need to be set up specifically for such a augmented performance. And since the report also made it seem like he was VERY aware of almost everything that went on in that studio, it also seems rather doubtful that he would be so totally out of the loop about such activities.

He was then asked if he was aware of other people lip synching on the show... to which he replied in effect that aside from some very dance oriented acts, he was not aware of it, which might have passed muster if this particular report was broadcast before Eminem did some lip synching of his own on that very same stage just one week after a scandal.

Perhaps he was trying to protect a few acts who he knew were big ratings grabbers in the past for the show, or maybe he wasn't comfortable acknowledging that SNL isn't as Live as it is supposed to be. Whatever the reason, I think this further complicates the public's perception of the show because now a lot of people(myself included of course) will always wonder if the musical guests are playing live or is it just Memorex?

I guess this whole SNL thing is like my own personal memogate... I just can't stop getting angry about it.

I saw the interview tonight and I wasn't convinced he was telling the truth, but he didn't seem very at ease the entire time. Not that I blame him--having a journalist sit me down when I have better things to do...oh, wait, I never have better things to do.

Yeah, I'm beginning to think you've got some kind of scary crush on Ashlee Simpson, historyisheresy. One of the scary ones, not a good one. Eh, eh?

I missed SNL this last night. Want to make some comment about me having a life, and you...well...grr...must...resist................ack.....

Ashlee Simpson has been very, very good for me as a blogger, I will admit it. Let's just say that without her, I wouldn't be where I am today(that being 6th place on the top blogs list). That being said, I am going to be vigilant about SNL lip synching from now on... and on Conan, Dave, Jay, and wherever artists sell themselves. They must sing/speak for real... no backing tracks or any of that crap.... it is the will of the people... they are getting paid to perform, and that's what they have to do. Singers should not have a luxury that other artists don't have. Its not fair! *foams at the mouth*

*watches the Eminem performance again and annotates it like Jim Garrison*

See, you'll notice that when he gets close to the end of the line, his mike goes forward and to the right, forward and to the right, and you can see his lips are out of sync with what he's singing. Now, let's go to frame 291, where we can see him say the F word, but it comes out as a different word on the tape.

BTW.... historyisheresy... I like it!!!!!!

I just watched it. Wow. Why did they do that the very week after the fiasco with Ashlee Simpson . . . and while mercilessly jabbing at her for lip synching? WTF?

I saw the Elton John thing . . . *shakes head* soooo wrong.

I can't believe I slept through the Mosh performance, though . . . I was just going to rest my eyes for a minute during the commercials . . .

See, I think it would have been enough for Kate Winslet to bring up the subject(because it was a cute way of addressing it).... they didn't have to keep hitting it on the head.
