Stargate Atlantis News

In two weeks on SciFi Channel, the final 3 episodes will begin airing, and, if I heard correctly, this will be followed by the Series Finale.

It is planned to go to 2 hour direct to DVD format after this.

Next year, there is to be a new series: Stargate Universe.

It has gotten a bit stale in the past couple seasons. I guess it is time for an end.

Stargate Universe sounds too much like 'Lost in Space with a Stargate twist'. But, we'll see.

We're only lucky if something good happens to be on.

Those shows are becoming fewer, and farther between. SciFi channel is more horror and fake paranormal than true science fiction, which is pretty sad.

And if you are in Bosnia, you are either a native or a troop. If a native, I feel for you. If a troop, well, you chose your place and have to live with it for now.

And why not a season of SG-1, Atlantis and Universe in a common season? Since they are all related in the Stargate saga.?!

They are two (or three) totally different creatures. They really have nothing to do with each other.

To run side by side (by side) they would have to have some common ground aside from stargates. So... what?! Have Wraith, Replicators, Goa'uld, or Ori in the Universe series? That would really kill the series from the inception.

 

I will let Universe stand on it's own merits, and judge it from that perspective. But Atlantis is a dead horse as far as I am concerned. Just as was SG-1. They both ran out of steam.

They were both great, and I am a great fan of both. But any series, it seems, can only go so far. Once the ULTIMATE foe is vanquished - what more can be done?

I was looking at the listings for sci fi the other night. 5 hours straight worth of game shows and BS 'paranormal investigations.' No sci fi. TV execs are idiots.

Indeed. They score recurring funding for stupid "reality" shows and the ever so sci-fi laden ECW, but somehow can't pull it together to rescue any of the recent half-dozen or more one-season wonders that would have surely built a loyal, if not insanely large, audience. We're just lucky they didn't figure out how to murder BSG in its crib.

I think that SG-1 had realistically reached it's end with the vanquishing of Anubis. However Atlantis still seems good to me... the original enemy, the Wraith, is still alive and kicking (and feeding). Plus, McKay and Keller seems like something finally happened to him that is nice, because he deserves it imo.

A dead horse?? Stargate Atlantis still has easily four more years of life still left in it. There is still the Wraith plotline, the Todd plotline, the Coalition plotline, and even a few other smaller plotlines that are still wide open. Sure, they'll keep making movies, but SG-1 has proved that once a franchise born in a tv series goes to movies, it loses a lot of it's quality. Ark of Truth may have been fairly good, but Continuum was downright confusingly abysmal. Atlantis still has a lot of life left, which is why it's a shame to see it going the path of SG-1.

Oh, and about the ULTIMATE enemy being defeated, last time i looked, the Wraith were still alive and feeding.

If you watched Ark of Truth and Continuum with preconcieved notions of what you expected them to be, then they don't match those notions. Sure they will be disappointing at best. In Continuum, I expected Ba'al to do what he does best, and that is being a PEST, which was certainly the case.

The bits left hanging at the end of the Atlantis series will likely be used as the hooks for the 2 hour direct to DVD format.

More like The Wrath of Khan.

 

DVD's make more money than shrinking viewership does.  They've really tried to kill the series with all the cast changes over the last season's worth.

SciFi channal has always had a habit of killing good shows. While I loved The Invisible Man, I think the first High profile canceling was Farscape. Not only canceling the show but canceled it on a massive cliff hanger. You had a lot of pissed off fans when that happened and even though we got The Peacekeeper War you could tell they were trying to cram and tie up everything from a  5th season into a 2 hour movie.

SG-1 (which brought on 2 actors from Farscape and even did a parody of Farscape) was really running out of steam. SG-Atlantis seems like it still has some life left in it but I would rather have it end now instead of running it into the ground. I do like the characters and they will be missed but better than turning it into M*A*S*H*. At least now the actor doing Sheppard can be free to make the Uncharted: Drake's Fortune movie

BTW. I enjoy the heck out of Ghost Hunters.

Keep in mind that SciFi Channel did NOT cancel SG-1 or Atlantis. MGM did. MGM owns Stargate.

NBC Universal owns the SciFi Channel, and Eureka Series. NO matter how much they say that the programming decisions are left up to SciFi Channel, many of these decisions come down from the NBC Executives.

all i can do is hope they turn up in atlantis now

Good point. In the US, we probably have about 6 major corps owning around 90% of media businesses. SciFi Channel is mostly about providing timeslots and ad revenue, not production. At least so far.

If the good suits at NBC (General Electric) had more respect for 'the brand,' maybe we'd see less ECW and Cha$e type stuff and the channel could become a recovery venue for SF genre programs that had a shaky first year in terms of expected audience numbers but still built a strong fan base. I suspect that as asynchronous (Tivo, iPods, etc.) viewing becomes more common, audience growth will depend more on real word of mouth buzz and less on expensive marketing blitzs.

Thank you, GW Swicord. I wish we had more variety and less of the fraggin marathons and other garbage that does not belong on the SciFi Channel.

At least Eureka's viewership is growing and it gained a sponsor: Degree Ultra. Plus the current season got expanded from 13 to 21 episodes, which is great.

The Stargate Universe series will replace the void left by Stargate Atlantis. The

stargate series is very popular and I hope they don't mess it up like they

did with the Star Trek series ... Star Trek Enterprise was a major let done,

also they didn't even do a spin off to something else ...

 

Looks like it's a wait an see thing now ...

GenBlood, definitely a wait and see thing.

I just hope that they don't load Universe down with plot baggage from Atlantis and SG-1. The Alterans/Ancients stuff you can't avoid, since the ship is one of the Alterans' starships.

Why do so many casual Trek folks hate Enterprise? I came to it with a severe case of Bakulitis and a strong distaste for time-travel nonsense. But they did a decent job of channeling Mr. Bakula's arrogance into a captain's uniform, gave us an amazing amount of Star Fleet officers in their underwear to help bring in new folks who want their SF to be a bit saucy, and did not seriously damage their story lines with that Temporal Cold War thing. I'm a really picky mother-frakker. What did I miss other than the fact that they couldn't get a decent enough broadcast schedule to get ludicrous ad revenues?
