DL: Ass getting kicked on beginner

Hello,

Playing a game as Terran on beginner, medium sized and 4 ai players (one of them on my team, which happens to be the only one with just a planet or two) makes my ass get kicked (military wise).

I have no problems maintaining peace with the AI (Drengin (surrendered early to Altarian), Yor (team), Altarian and Arcean). Economy no problem either, since that was what i concetrated on most (econ starting bonus of 50+). My treasury is currently 150K and using it to buy my buildings and ships quickly. Technology is decent, though it might be the culprit, i don't know. My military sucks, the Arcean kick my custom ship's asses, They seem to have lots of ships and huge fleets, and the best weapons and defenses. I believe it to be impossible to be any bit better than the Arceans now. My technology is apparently to low to gain in on them.

I have no choice to stop playing this game now, because the Arceans and the Altarians are just an inch away from making an alliance. Which would make them the strongest alliance in the game (the Yor are negligible).

So what the hell am i doing wrong?

If you need any more information, please ask.

From what I have heard here, it sounds like you are investing too much in your economy.  The fact that you have 150K proves that...  My guess, from what you have said, is that you have built too many economical structures and not enough factories and research facilities.

Except in the beginning, when you need to buy colony ships so that you can expand quickly, you should rarely be buying structures or ships.  You should only be buying them if you are in a real pinch as buying ships and structures is not cost efficient.  Your money should be around to keep your industry and research at top levels.

The fact that the Arceans are more technologically advanced than you furthers that either you haven't been putting enough focus on researching and / or you are not researching enough war technology.  You should always be paying attention to where other races are technologically.  This is especially true for those that you plan to go to war with or may be planning to start a war with you.

You want to be prepared before the war happens.  You don't want to be racing to match their technology or military after the war has already occurred.

Hope that helps.

Remember, you can always restart. If you're playing a campaign, you can always restart a level.

My advise is to revise your strategy. Think about what kind of results you want, and invest money in it.

Take a close look at your tech tree and your planets. They both play vital roles in maintaining your status in the game. Spend that $150k on some improvements on your planets that benefit your strategy and invest research in your strategy.

In fact, it does indeed sound like you're investing too much in economy and not enough into technology, as Hombre mentioned. My advise is therefore to invest some of that money on buying some planetary improvements that focus on your technology, and to revisit your economy sliders to push more money into technology and less money into your cash reserves. You should be increase production and/or lower taxes, both of which have beneficial effects (increased production means more stuff, and lower taxes means more happiness and faster growth).

I started a game anew with the same settings as mentioned in the OP.

I spended as much as i could in weapon and defense research, and more factories on planets. The entire time in the game i was number one on the "Most powerful civilizations" list, and i kicked some Drengin, Altarian and Arcean ass and won the game :D

My treasury never reached 30k let alone 150k. Economy was good enough for upholding the military and research.

Thank you for replying and the help :)

In the future, remeber that when your treasury is over 20000 bc, you lose a large part of your income.

20% racial penalty...not a big deal assuming you're not 1) on a tiny/small map or 2) playing strictly for score.

It can make it so you'll never actually get over the 20k hump, but if that's the case you either need to spend more (so you don't reach 20k in the first place) or spend less (so you have net income while above 20k).
