[game mechanics] combat & ties

For me, the "tie rule" introduced in galciv2, which makes the most powerful attack ship win in case of a tie, doesn't make any sense. (even if I can somewhat imagine other reasons why it would have been made like that)

So for elemental I suggest a lot more randomness in case of ties, sometimes one can survive but quite frequently both "units" could be destroyed pure and simple.

After all why could a ogre die from a sword sank into its heart but still have enough strenght to smash the head of the opponent knight with a single last swing of its enormous mace...

often adrenaline itself can sustain the life of a doomed soul ... ;)

I don't think there will not be many ties, due to the turn based continuous battles. Since at every moment only one unit will deal damage, as long as it is not hurting itself there won't be ties.

The issue in Galciv was that every ship attacked every combat round. So it was possible that they all died in the same round.

I've had it happen in Heroes of Might and Magic V. A certain spell killed my enemy, and after that, my last unit died as well. It was kinda weird and I was killed in the next battle, right at the start, because I lacked any troops :P

well what if there is any kind of lasting damage, like poison ?

your last unit is poisoned, you last unit kill the last ennemy unit then dies from poison ... makes sense for me

also a wizard could have cast a destructive global enchantment with makes everyone on the battlefield die ...

A wizard did it!

I realise I totally forgot counterattacks, which would probably be the main source of ties if they exist... (oups)

Read it all and I don't agree, it's not really the same aspect that I started a discussion for here

As far as I am concerned there are no ties. Only defeats. You win when you own the battlefield. If everybody dies you both loose. I don't see any possibility of a tie.

Maybe I just don't understand. I just thik whatever happens when you loose should happen if nobody wins.

you're right but for me this is just a question of semantics

I called it a "tie" because that's how the thing is called in galciv2 when both ships have the firepower & timing necessary to destroy each other into oblivion on the same round

In master of magic there were some very strange tie situations.   In master of magic units could fight each other, both give and take damage in such a way that BOTH units died (the attacker and defender).   The ending result seemed to often be a bit random.  Usually it was defeat, but occationally it would be a victory.  Sometimes, the only unit remaining would be a summon creature that disappeared after the battle which would give victory but no reward or something.  I remember that causing strange issues with town battles when they would kill my last guy, then my fire elemental would "win" but couldn't actually capture the city.  I think it was then changed in version 1.3 to capture the town before disappearing.
