Hillary Clinton to accept Obama's offer of secretary of state job

Genius or dumbest move a President-elect could ever possibly make?!

See news here: Hillary Clinton to accept Obama's offer of secretary of state job

I saw some weekend talking heads discussing the possibility that Obama would offer Hillary Clinton the Secretary of State job and after hearing their discussion, I'm finding myself wondering if this is the move of an obvious mad-man or a stroke of genius?

On the mad-man side, well, it's Hillary friggin' Clinton.  Offering her any position within your administration is a sure sign of madness, at least from the side of about 50% of the country that can't stomach Clinton (either of them, but especially her!) and just want her to go away already.  (And of course, many of those folks still rejoice at the fact that she lost out on the big prize!)

On the genius side, well there's the thought that by offering Hillary Clinton this position Obama will in fact make her go away by sending her outside the country early and often.  She'll be involved on the foreign policy stage, but she'll be representing the administration and will likely be on a very short leash so chances that she'll embarrass the administration are relatively low.  In effect, giving her the job gets her out of the country and in most cases out of the news.

I'm not sure which one wins here.  I do admit that the thought of offering Hillary Clinton an ambassadorship to somewhere that would be far across the planet is something that I hoped Obama would consider.  I could crack a bad joke that William Jefferson Clinton would hope for an ambassadorship offer of his own -- to somewhere clear around the globe from where his wife would regularly be :p :D LOL -- is also something I hoped for.  Getting both of them out of the mainland and off the more frequent political radar would be great for the country.  Both of them had their time in the spotlight and both need to go away.  How that happens, I'm not even sure I care, just as long as it does happen.

Anyway, that's my take on things, perhaps you differ.  If so, speak up below...

Obama is an idiot, it's clearly showing along with his inexperience.  Where is the "change" if you keep appointing people that are just typical government hacks?

Hehehehe!  I have stated many times the one place that a president can really set his mark is on foreign policy.  The press and of course the public will blame or congratulate him on many things, but that is where he has virtually carte blanche.

Obama just screwed his pooch!

That's 2!

WHOOT. Man this is getting good. Heres to that change you OB people wanted... just the same ol BS! For the beating ive gotten even as far as being called a racist for not supporting him... ahh this is more icing on the cake for me

To be honest I'd rather she talk to our enemies than Obama, she is tougher.

Now, this will definitely strengthen her foreign policy cred. IMO SoS is better than VP. The big question is can Obama control her? If he slips up and she runs against him in 2012, he would have gave her the gun to shoot him in the back. IMO it would have been safer to keep an eye on her in congress where she is one of many. This guy isn't too bright, for having an ivy league education. he asked her about the position, she leaked it to the press, now he's stuck like chuck. To not appoint her would be a slap in the face to her supporters. Hillary is smart, I give her that. Obama tricked her once, wonder if he'll get a second chance.

I keep seeing Bill's face saying "We're baaack!" XD

Hillary will "serve " at the pleasure of the President, here is a hint, watch for Blue dresses on Hillary.

By the third or fourth day of his presidency, the media will already be attacking Obama. Then again, the media makes their money by selling ads to consumers (literally, have you seen how many ads can be in those papers or magazines?) and then pointing out the evils of anyone who doesn't.

Hillary Clinton at least has some experience, albeit little.

Smart move, follows the Mafia law of "keep your friends close, keep your enemies closer"

Crap, we're really screwed now.  The three biggest positions in the executive office filled by democrats who's economic plans will destroy our economy and whose military plans will leave us open for invasion!  This is especially worse since the president has little to no experience, and the secretary of state will be a clone of Bill Clinton!

and the democrats control both the house and the senate. (48 democracts, 2 independants who caucuses with the democrats, 49 republicans, and 1 vacant seat that used to belong to obama.)...

Hopefully we cna get another republican into the senate for a tie.

LOL.  In case you haven't noticed our economy is ALREADY IN THE SHITHOUSE. Goodgrief. Open for invasion?  By whom?  Muslim extremists don't want any part of our country, the Chinese are far too busy dealing with their own economic woes, and Russia?  For the sake of what?

Besides, he's just (apparently) got Gates, A REPUBLICAN to stay on as S of Def.

Me thinks you conservatives whine far too much far too early about soup you yourselves spilt.

Be well.

so... things are bad means people should not complain about the perceived ability of a person to get things better OR to make things worse?

His exclamation was "crap, things are in the shitter and the guy in charge is gonna make them WORSE"

No, but I do think its high time we got ourselves out of this shitter and the ONLY way to do that it to get to work, TOGETHER.  Half the battle in any war is psychological: get your head on straight, get to putting one foot in front of the other, get to working with guys you don't really like, and you know what?  The job gets done.  Have some faith in America.

Be well.

I am doing my part... the question is what the supreme commander in chief will be doing.

working together will never happen. The people in office have little in touch with the common joe.

Its not the people in power that will have to get off their asses, but the common Joe's who need to step up to the plate, re-tool themselves, start a business, work a second or third job, p[ay down their debt, and invest once again in their futures.

On the upper echelon, just what has Prez Elect Obama NOT done?  He has reached across the aisle, he has brought together, by all accounts, thje best and brightest of our experts to come up with a plan, he has hit the friggin' ground running far more than any other Pez elect in my experience as a citizen, and he even has a Republican Secretary of Defense.

The CEOs, those much tauted movers and shakers of the American capitalist system have shown themselves to be, well, insensitive at best and complete idiots at worst. Some capitalists they are, standing in long lines with their hands out.  Jezzz, its disgusting.  Yeppers, these are America's saviors?  NOT.  We, the people, are.

question... anyone here in joe user who is in debt but not going to pay it and instead declare bankrupcy instead of getting off of their asses?

question... why should i get off my ass and work harder when it just means id have to give more to people who would not? if there are FORCED handouts, i'd rather be taking then giving. I am altrusitic, but I am not a sucker... which is why communism fails.

The people at the helm need to create laws and regulations that reward doing and eliminate handouts. That will solve the problem. Not pep talks suggesting that "We all should get off of our asses" when laws are written to take from those who do and give to those who don't.

Interesting.  I am sure Dems share some responsibility, after all they gave Mr. Bush pretty much everything he asked for.  And the President does have veto power.

As to the second and third job thing.  I am simply following the lead of my more conservative friends who keep telling me people need to stop whining and get to work.  As a liberal Democrat I have been saying all along that we need to invest in our infrastructure, our schools, our people.  But, we'd rather spend our money on wars and CEOs.  Too bad they took our money and blew it up.

I suppose the point is that we got ourselves into this mess and now we need to get ourselves back out.  To me this means stop and/or seriously reduce our spending, increase out taxes, repay our debt, andget creative in the workplace.   I don't draw lines at spending cuts: I think we need to reduce pretty much everything, but especially the Defense Department and Health and Human Services.  In the first case, we need to reexamine what we need a massive military and massice array of large scale warfare weapons for in an age of limited combat engagements. In the latter we need to look at how to reduce medical costs, pharmaceutical costs, and physician costs. Not how to cut people from the rolls which just as a people drain on the economy: we need healtyhy people with healthy attitudes.  Perhaps with a national healthcare system, employers would not feel the burden of providing healthcare, costs pewr unit in production would go down and we might be in a better position to compete globally.

When I was a therapist I suggested to clients who were not working that they might consider baking and selling cookies, or washing cars, or doing home cleaning services. Jobs which are essentially independent and entrapreneureal.  There were always reasons, of course, why these clients could not do this, but I tried to plant the thought that they had some responsibility in making their own lives better.

Be well!

Hey there Talt,

!.) No. I suspect a lot of people here are working hard and trying their best to pay their mortgages.  But, getting by isn't good enough.  We need a culture of excellence, a culture with fire in its belly, who isn't into "taking", but rather, "giving"

.  2.) For the good of yourself and the good of your country.  Don't forget I also suggested we should cut spending all around, especially with DoD and HHS, and raise taxes all around. Somehow we have to pay down our own nation debt while at the same time become responsible citizens.

Now, what "hand -outs" are you talking about specifically? And what portion of the national budget do they represent? (which will tell us if such an adjustment will actually solve the problem as you understand it.

I look forward to your reply.

Be well.
