very disappointed

Hi everyone,

i just wanted to tell the developers and even more the publishers how disapointed i am.

I bought a copy of SoaSe via Amazon, and yes, it's a used one. Nonetheless, i OWN a hardware copy of it now, and think i should be able to play the game.

Here come the BIG problems. The game crashes 15 secs after i start it, doesn't matter what i do. I am told to update via Impulse. Impulse itself crashes after about 30 secs, no matter what i do.Why am I forced to pull the update via this crappy piece of software? I remember Neverwinter Nights, where Bioware held updates for every former version to the newest one, e.g. from 1.25678 to 1.5, from 1.25689 to 1.5, etc. Must have been hundrets of separate updates, but if the ingame updater didn't work, you were able to download them, no matter what!

You should really think about your policies here.

Although i know the email-adress of the former owner, which is bound to the serial, i can't update the damn game.

This sucks, and i have to admit that i will buy no other game from you in the future.

Best regards

Patch 1.05 is available on third party sites. Only 1.1 and going forward will require Impulse.

I'm talking 1.05 to 1.05.028. impossible to get.

It's the same thing. The last 3 digits of a patch number are for internal use by Impulse. 1.05 is 1.05.028 :P

sins and impulse crashing after 15 seconds indicates faulty hardware of some sort.

or your windows installation is badly damaged.

What's the Event Log say? I've only managed to crash this game using ATI Tray Tools overlays & Xfire, hardly the game at fault. This game has been rock solid for me.

I'd suggest you do more research, to me it sounds like your having other issues. If the original game crashes, I'm pretty sure patching won't fix it.

So, before stomping up and down let's take a breathe and give us some real details to fix it. Start with the event log & then your dxdiag.

never crashed, ever

have you looked at yourself before you pointed your finger?

I have never had SoaSE or Impluse crash on me. How many other programs of your's crash? maybe list some system specs, and someone may spot where your issue is (not me though i only know enough about comps to be dangerous).

Although maybe it's karma... i bought my game brand new, helping support the company that made it.

I haven't had the game crash, but Impulse crashes on me without fail if I click on any game in the Store tab. Others are also experiencing the same problem. Stardock's aware of it though, since we've posted our error logs and helped trouble shoot it, and they're working on a fix.

So yeah, post some info and maybe someone can help you get it running.

Actually, you didn't buy a game from them in the first place.  When you buy software, especially software tied to a game account, you are buying the right to use that software, which unfortunately the seller can't transfer to you.  So you effectively bought the media the software is stored on, but kind of screwed yourself out of being able to get support or enjoy the game online.

As for your crashes, you must have something strange with your hardware or software setup, because the game doesn't crash like that for the rest of us.

Finnek,

It would be helpful for the community to know what exactly you've done when you say "doesn't matter what i do".   I mean, up-dating all drivers and running the latest OS patches is significantly different than spinning your chair around 3 times and counting to 10 before restarting the game!  ;P

....just sayin....we can't help if you don't give us more information!

Question;

Is buying it used buying it? After you register the Game does it not belong to the person who registered the game or can you change it at will? *_*

I dont know sounds kinda shady to me.

Sorry. ;P

Once the game is registered with Stardock it becomes permanently tied to that account. The registration cannot be transferred to another account.

So the second-hand buyer gets the disc and is able to patch to 1.05, but nothing else. It's not shady in the sense that Stardock doesn't try to stop you from re-selling the physical disc and it's perfectly legal, they just won't support the second hand sale :P

Hi all, Finnek,

At the basic level, I sympathize.

Without going into all the problems-with-Impulse denial stuff: the bill of rights (I admire the thought but do not value the actual thing enough to cap the words :p) and in fact the whole industry should, perhaps, let people know what right a second-hand copy of the game grants them?

If I buy a 2nd hand car, the roads are still open - but in the country I live in I will need to make sure about insurance and safety of the car. The test has a price ticket.

If I buy a house that is not newly built, there are no closed doors inside - but I will have to pay a 'notary' for the transfer. And I may have to pay for certain services etc.

If I buy a 2nd hand TV I will have to re-program it to my umm...geological position (? - I am not sure this is the right phrase; please forgive my ignorance) but it will work.

Would it not be a good idea to tell peeps in advance what parts of 2nd-hand or 'used' software can and cannot be expected to function?

A decent option I think would be to allow 2nd-hand buyers to opt for

1) use current version only (no charge)

2) buy (for a few dollars) the right to update (ad infinitum).

3) buy (for a few dollars more, Mr Eastwood) the right to update and Multi-Play perhaps...although this is an arguable 'extra expense'.

I think you have, at the very least, the right to clarity.

I'm sorry for the trouble you have had thus far in playing Sins. You can always contact Iron Clad Games at [email protected] for help with game crashes. However as it has been stated above the used copy of the game is not eligible for downloads beyond 1.5. A used copy of the game provides no income to the developers or the publishers of the game. While the crashing is unfortunate you can contact Iron Clad for assistance.

What is important here is that the EULA prevented the resale of the game.

Here is a list of the options and limitations that the End User License Agreement does not allow for.

YOU MAY NOT:
1. Copy and distribute the SOFTWARE or any portion of it except as expressly provided in this Agreement.
2. Sublicense, rent, lease or transfer your personal serial number without express written consent from Stardock.
3. Sublicense, rent or lease the SOFTWARE or any portion of it.
4. Decompile, disassemble, reverse engineer or modify the SOFTWARE or any portion of it, or make any attempt to bypass, unlock, or disable any protective or initialization system on the SOFTWARE.
5. Copy the documentation accompanying the SOFTWARE.
6. Upload or transmit the SOFTWARE, or any portion thereof, to any electronic bulletin board, network, or other type of multi-use computer system regardless of purpose (except
as provided for above for "mods").
7. Include the SOFTWARE in any commercial products intended for manufacture, distribution, or sale.
8. Include "mods" in any commercial products intended for manufacture, distribution,
or sale.

This is only a small section of the whole agreement.

I am sorry for the trouble you have endured and I hope that you can get the issue solved. If you have further questions please let me know.

So ah, Seabass,

That was a fine piece of info you gave and I like that you did it.

Now then...why can he/we drive a 2nd hand car  and get it up to par (is Generalwagen getting any extra money from the sale? - nope; but pretty sure $hell is, later on ;) ) but not a piece of software?

I think, Seabass, you ('Docko) have a right to charge him for updating your/his software. Once. That will generate a bit of income for you (more than BMyota ever will...except for spare parts?) but more importantly perhaps will give you a lot of goodwill, no?

Seabass, it doesn't say anywhere in the sections you provided that you cannot resell the game.

Quoting Seabass, reply 17

It does say you cannot transfer your serial number, but there's nothing there that says you can't resell the game.

*edit* In keeping with what Lucas said, why not sell a new serial key for a small charge?

Because the car maker isn't spending any more money on supporting the second user. Car repairs come out of *your* pocket if you buy it second-hand.

With software, costs come out of their pocket. And, only one person can use the car at a time (the original seller obviously doesn't have it anymore), but if you transfer registration for software you can still play it and the other guy can too.

I wish people would stop bringing up these examples without ever thinking them through. It's been debunked countless times.

Annatar,

Again, I offer a solution. Again, you state the status quo without further thought of advancement/improvement ('And the other guy can, too' simply means you do not trust the original owner to de-install...and anyway again the solution is simple; check Coe's comments).

You have been very helpful for many people but you should realize that this time, all you offer is an insult.

Desist, please. You are not furthering the issue. And I can only be hurt by friends (who would not try).

I will not react to this further since it is not thread-related.

Isn't selling a used game, distributing it? Even if i give my copy to someone else because i don't play the game anymore, that is distributing it, right?. However, if I purchased the game, never used it or even opened the package, that would be and is a different story.

This is one of the many reasons why i get all my games in one condition, NEW.

In all seriousness, the problem with "legal speak" is all about proving interpretation and how you say what your doing. If you saying your copying games its illegal, "archiving" for later use but you "lost" your original its legal.

A game like this where there is no copywrite protection, yea someone can buy the game, copy it, keep the key then sell the disk, but then the person who bought the disk is missing out on the latest updates.

And in reply to majomisfit about charging just a little extra to get the 1.1 updates and the like. At first I agreed, that would be a great idea, but then think about how people are. Yeah that idea would be great for all the people out there who already bought second hand copies, but you would eventualy end up  with one person in a group paying for the game, giving a copy to all his friends, and then they all only have to pay 5 bucks just to save money. That would hurt the company more than it would help. The old saying goes

"Gotta keep honest people honest"

To answer the original topic, FINNEK, you can click start - > run - > (type in) msconfig - >click ok -> click on "Services" tab. Then click check box at bottom that says "hide all microsoft services" then click disable all. - > click on the "startup" tab. Click disabled all - > click apply. Restart and then try your sins of a solar. If it works then you got some bad software running in background. If not, your O/S is messed up, or your install is messed up.

To undo all that, just do the same thing except click enable all. Keep in mind this disables all your anti virus and other programs that run in background which are pone to causing problems.
