Let’s face up to fact, despite the current financial crisis, this country is a nation of consumers and to regain its lifestyle must continue to spend. Still, there is such a thing as moderation in pursuit of happiness. Oh, the wealthy must still have their car museums and mansions; the slightly lower scale their spacious homes and semi-private neighborhoods, together with flying first class to vacation lands or more moderate family trips via super SUVs to a resort, ranch or DisneyWorld—this is good for America; for in the process the well-off  the rich do spread the wealth around.

For the rest of us it is important once in a while to think big: get that HDTV and subscribe to digital, take a relaxing vacation occasionally, go to a fancy restaurant for one’s birthday, splurge on the kids for a happier life, while there is no better way to stimulate the economy. But think twice about buying a home if you are reasonably content in your rental apartment or present modest home. There’s far more to infrastructure than the obsessive housing industry. Senior citizens should make it a principle of living to cash their checks each month to keep the cash flow healthy. Yes, listen to your president shop the malls and discount stores, but be sure you don’t max out your credit card.

And there’s the rub: to have a thriving society American style there does have to be a way to distribute the wealth through stimulus packages of better wages, healthcare for all, retirement safety, better living conditions, along with college and vocational opportunities.

We can do this because we are a materialistic and ambitious people, but we need to be more generous.

UI is intended to bridge the gap between jobs. It isn't intended as a long term solution. Like I said earlier this is a "hand up" as long as the person receiving UI is activly seeking another job as watertown1978 pointed out.

Most states have that stipulation.  And basic UI (26 weeks) is not a hand out by any means.  It is paid by the employer, so is factored into the wages you are paid (in other words, you are paying it with a reduced offer from the employer).  When the politicians get on their horse and start throwing more money into it, then it becomes a hand out.

And yes I would say that anyone out of work should accept whatever work comes their way.  If I were to lose my job tomorrow naturally I would attempt to get a job similar to what I am doing now but I would also look for any full time job I could get quickly, even if that meant working at McDonalds full time while still looking for a more permanent job.

Thats the sad menatily this country has gone to. Instead of working for money, people instead think that taking a pay cut and working at a job that pays not so well is an insult, yet they have no issues taking whatever free money/help that is givin to them for free while they are outta work.

 

Ironic thing is I had this issue with a young little pup few months ago, He thought it was an insult by telling me to back to work that there is someone in drive though that needed to give me thier order. I instead tried to talk some sense into him on that.... that sometimes life is not fair, and you HAVE to swallow your pride and do it. If it means being a productive citizen in your own little part just to live and make some money.... me and this guy went on with him for about a month till one day his dad saw him talking about this and put him in check. It was priceless.

 

People need to get over themselves and get over thier pride. Even if this means doing what you need to do to make ends meet then you just do it. It also sends the right message to your kids that even when times are hard, that taking that hit is not the worse thing , and that you will do what you need to do to conserve whatever pride you have.

 

Ive been there... yeah McD's sucked.... badly... but like what was said it was a job that was to make some money till I got my foot in the door in a better job. It happens to most of us.

 

When it comes down to it, if it means i have to take UI or something along those lines Ill take it, but that wont stop me from thinking of getting myself back to work as soon as possible because I think if I am able to work and do so, that not only am i giving my kids the right idea, but the benifits I dont use will be put to better use for someone that also is on hard times..... Its a big ol circle.
