Is the Human race the only playable faction?

Or is the game developed to allow to play the others? If so, but apart from that, will each faction have its own kingdom/structures style/method (say, dragon caves), or are they just powerfull NPCs that wander about and only the Human race take part in kingdom organization and diplomacy between them?

And will we be able to mod races in?

I think one of the interviews mentioned "Race of Man", "Beasts" and "Fallen". I'd kinda hope for more races than that in the final product (MoM had a rather nice line-up) but that's at least three as it currently stands.

They also suggested that your positive/negative channeling alignment was tied to your chosen (starting? being able to use other peoples stuff as you conquer them is kind-of a staple in the genre) race. I hope that's not true as I liked to mix things up with life magic Dark Elves and death magic High Men and the like.

Click on the Lore tab up at the top for a general overview of the races. And it has been confirmed that we will be able to mod our own races into the game. In fact, I look forward to it...

Might be nice to have some collaborative community races going on.

I would love if the races weren't mono-cultural. Even if the differences is just in art assets I wouldn't want the people from opposite shores of an ocean to be identical. If the groups are given entirely different sets of units, even better!

From frogboy in another forum:

The game is only going to include two races for story purposes. But players will not only be able to create their own races in-game but actually mod full-blown races, submit them, and share them with other players. So if you want the Klackons in there, you could do that. ;)

If I'm reading Frogboy right when he talks about content sharing in his big post here today, we should be able to selectively modify our personal game context to include custom civs of our own and from those posted by others and quality-scored by Stardock. The sandbox might start out looking a bit monocultural, but maybe one of the things that will distinguish different "persistent universes" is the number and variety of cultures on the map.
