Getting my Dad into Gaming

My dad bought a $7?? gaming machine that is awesome yet affordable, but he does not game at all. (Except for Second Life, but wether or not it is a game is debateable)

He wants to game, but after him getting crushed by a few bots on Warmonger... Yeah.  He is not used to the WASD configuration he naturally wants to go to the arrow keys. But if he is going to get into any shooter he needs to use the WASD configuration. 

Please help me, gaming with my dad would be a dream come true.  A potenial gamer is at stake, it is your duty as gamers to unite and help the noob.

All I am asking for is a list of games that I should have him play first to get him into the shooter genre.  The bigest block is the controls, which is true for all non gamers.  Have you ever noticed how non-gamers have issues with the controls?

Any tips or shooters I should have him play would be greatly appreciated.

By the way: He wants to get Halo and he is not interested in multiplayer. Also any other games (NO crappy DRM) also work. Should I recommend Sins of a Solar Empire? My goal is to get him into gaming, one way or another.

Halo's a pretty good place to get into singleplayer shooters, at least. I'd actually recommend TF2 as a decent place to start multiplayer-wise: heavy is a very straightforward shooter experience, and from there he can branch out.

Thanks, for your help.  I was thinking about Team Fortress 2, but I wasn't sure.  He has issues with controls.  I will get him into Halo first.  To get him used to the controls.  Then I will give him the buddy key for TF2 that I got with the Orange Box. 

Edit: Nevermind, for some reason the buddy key I had magically dissappeared.. :(

Half-life 2 has excellent atmosphere to immerse in anyway, old farts tend to do a lot better when there's more than just blowing stuff up.  So just get him another orange box. :)

 

Sadly, PC Halo probably is a really good place to get him started though.  OMFG easy game with a decent story, weapons, and badguys.

 

Oh the Id front, am I the only one that enjoyed RTCW more than Doom3 and Quake4?  A truly annoying game, I got killed by those bastards with the silenced sub machine guns so many times before I got used to killing them before they shot...  For straight shooters of course, these are all perfect.

For strategy games if you can get your hands on Populus: The Begining. My dad is NOT a gamer. But he spent a very long time playing that one obsessively.

 

First Person Shooters: You can not get any easier than Prey, which is also pretty good value on Steam.

Well, not exactly a shooter per se, and certainly not FPS, but Vice City and the sequels are a lot of fun, I spent days on Sims and Roller Coaster Tycoon, but those are builders, not shooters. Civ and Empire Earth are great also, but also they are less shooters. Well.... hmmmm......

Doom is old, but lots of fun, still, and like the poster above i think i died like a million times in the hallways in Doom2. :\

Remember when you left your bodies behind?  Haha, mine littered the hallways and a friend said "Whats that?" And Sam said, "Oh, thats Teal, there... and there... and there..."  Haha, but still it was great fun, even if it was 3 or 4 seconds at a time, die and reload the level.  :)

old farts tend to do a lot better when there's more than just blowing stuff up.

Well, I'm guessing old fartdom begins sometime after 40 (maybe for some as early as 30, depending on who's doing the labelling) and ten years ago I would have vehemently argued against the above statement, after all, mindless destruction and mayhem holds high status in the gaming pantheon.

I do concede that I tend to like a more strategic/methodical approach to my gaming nowadays, especially the 4x style games of which I first started out playing before the Dooms and HLs caught my interest and twitching index finger... hey, I've come full circle (instant karma). :grin:

So, yes I still do like to "blow stuff up" but I like to take days, if not weeks to do so. *_*
