dreamscapes? a nightmare more like

as a matter of fact I have, and it runs fine... are you sure it's not something you're doing wrong?  check your drivers and such, make sure they are up to date.  And you are using the dreamscenes from Vista Ultimate, or are you running Deskscapes?  There may be an update that addresses your specific problem, but believe me I've been running dreams since I upgraded to Vista and have had very few problems with them.

And no Wincustomize doesn't have shares in anything, it's a community run site, which means that it's run by us, the users. Wincustomize is a forum for skinners, and artists to post their work, anything more than that always goes back to that goal.  The reason you pay for a subscription, is to pay for the bandwidth the site uses, and so fourth.

i didnt say they didnt run ok, i said it was a cpu hog. i suggest you check your usage too.

Different dream run differently based on many things including video length, resolution, etc.

Yea seriously....   you seem to be having a lot of problems lately supershaft1961.  And you don't seem to be taking it very well either.  This is really a lot of 'issues' to be falling on one person.   Cursed??

The amount of cpu usage depends on a number of factors.

Your cpu speed, the number of CPU cores you have, what type of graphics card you have, what type of dream it is.

WMV based dreams tend to use more cpu than MPG based dreams and the higher the resolution the dream is, the more cpu it tends to use.

Dynamic dreams such as all of those released by myself should use very low levels of cpu as they do not need to decode high resolution video which can be very cpu intensive.

ok, before any dream is applied.... CPU: 2%, Memory: 29%

Dream 1 --  CPU: 10%, Memory: 31%

Dream 2 --  CPU: 10%, Memory: 36%

Dream 3 --  CPU: 14%, Memory: 32%

Dream 4 --  CPU: 11%, Memory: 34%

Dream 5 --  CPU:  9%, Memory: 35%

Thats an ave. of a 8.8% increase in CPU and 4.6% in Memory

Hum...  I'm not seeing the hog anywhere

For all of you who have your dreams working at a low Rate. I applaud to you. That is fantastic news.

Now for us who have vista and see this spike and even see the BSoD like me. This problem does exist.

And yes. I have brought it up to Stardock  support. without any resolve.

could be my NVIDIA graphics driver or anything else.

We all have different setups driver and the rest of the stuff that makes a computer work.

If it works for you. Good, I am happy for you.

I will tell you that this problem does exist on my computer.

using dynamic Dreams use a lot less CPU but have given me the Blue screen of Death.

I will also add that the first version of descape worked like it should. all other updates after have not worked for me.

I will tell you all. I love Stardock and all programs they make.  I know sooner or later that this will be fixed by Stardock. I am just waiting for that time.

If you are not a fan of Stardock or things don't work right for you. you have a choice to not use them.

WeatherBound: Just out of curiosity.....what did the BSOD say?

You can not read it because its to blurry. Its kinda strange.

The screen goes blue with many shades of blue. you can tell it tries to display words but its a mixed in with shades of blue.

Then screen shuts down to black. so blue screen only stays for maybe 2 seconds then computer shuts down.

That points to an onboard chip headed south....which is to say your motherboard needs to be replaced. I do find it a bit strange that it only happens when you load Dreams........(if that's the case. heat might be the culprit)  

In Control Panel/ System/ Advanced System Settings/ Advanced/ Startup and Recovery - you do have 'Automatically Restart' un-checked, correct? While that would explain a reboot (not a heat related/hardware failure shutdown), under no circumstance, with viable hardware, would the blue screen distort.

It does not happen to every Dream i try. Sometimes they work for a couple of days then crashes. Some dreams work but with the high CPU usage.

I will say that it did do the same thing a while back when i tried to install ZoneAlarm.

I un-checked the auto restart.

You and me talked about a heat problem before.

I sent my computer to HP and they replaced the mother board and a whole lot of other stuff because i sent my notebook to them three times.  I told them i wanted it fixed.

They replaced it just to shut me up. Lol

I did extend the warrantee, do to are talks before.

To the most part. My computer works good until i load a dream. so i do blame the dreams since thats when i see the bsod.

I will contact HP support and see what they say about not able to read the bsod.

Considering the amount of 'security' software you've tried on this machine, let's explore a few things that could cause excessive heat and/or a BSOD:

Do a search for: vsdatant.sys

                        klif.sys

If you find either, go no further.

Start/ All Programs/ Accessories/ Command Prompt: right click, "Run as Administrator". Type SFC /scannnow

I have to agree some people get very odd results on some systems.. I have a single core 3.2 GHz but I make up for it with a GeForce 8800Gt... when I put that in, it was just like having a dual core.  My computer can run just about anything, the most awesome windowblinds skins, when I had XP I had the Effects in Window FX running, transparent this, transparent that, no slowdown at all.  Since upgrading to vista, the dreams run beautifully, no skipping with animations, everythings runs smooth...

just out of curisiosity what graphics card do yo have Weatherbound?

I never had any skipping with the dreams. Its just crashes. Lol

If you do not like the amount of CPU that the dreams use that you have tried, create your own. It's not hard and most dream makers will be more than happy to assist if asked nicely. Once you have all of the tools you need and learn how to loop video proficiently, the following will help in getting low CPU usage.

Here are a few tips to keep dreams down to around 15 to 20 %.
 
1) Use MPEG 2 video over WMV whenever possible. The downside to this is larger file size.
2) Use the lowest frames per second that you can and still have fluid movement.
3) Resolution does not change the CPU usage that much, so stay as close to the original size as possible to keep the clarity high. I use a ratio of 16:10 and a resolution that my encoder will handle, normally 1792x1120, 1600x1000, or 1280x800.
4) Try to encode with as little compression as you can and a low bit rate. On bit rate, 15k - 18k is what I shoot for. On 30 fps video you will need to use around 15k - 16k, on 25fps you can bump it up some to 17k - 19k. Remember, the highest bit rate will give the best end result for video quality.

Lastly, most members of the WinCustomize community will go out of thier way to assist as long as you don't act like you have a chip on your shoulder.

I have not got the blue BSoD yet. Lol

I did notice that when using the Casper Dream and i unplugged my notebook that a window pops up and says deskscape has paused. But in fact it did not pause. Dream worked good though. I then went under setting in deskscape and un check the option that says to  warn me when computer is running on battery. As soon as i did that my graphics got scrambled and Screen went black. Then gave me a warning about graphics card had problems.

I then check that same thing under settings and dream worked again. Strange stuff
