Washington Redskins performance predicts election results

Snopes.com finds something which is technically true... and freakish.

Call it an October Surprise of another sort, but the folks at Snopes.com, the Urban legend debunkers came across a claim that they couldn't debunk... in fact, they found out it was even more freakish. The claim they originally heard was that for the last 15 elections, the Washington Redskins were the most accurate barometer for the resulting presidential election... and it turns out it wasn't the last 15.... it was the last 17.

SInce the 1936 election, the Washington Redskins performance has accurately predicted the result of the election. If they win in their last home game before the election, then the incumbent or the incumbent's party will win the election. If they lose that game, the challenger wins the election. It is a stunning run of fortune, which makes this weekend's game between the basement-dwelling Redskins(2-4) and the abysmal Packers(3-4), that much more interesting.

If you want Bush to win, then I guess you have to root for the Redskins... and if you want him to lose... well, the Packers are your team.

Then again, with the Red Sox one game away from salvation, streaks can be broken... but it will make some interesting viewing on Sunday nonetheless.

Now imagine the dilema I have living in Packerland and being a Bush supporter. Some of the local sports announcers are giving us special dispensation to root for the Packers even though we support Bush.
I should start a conspiracy rumour; the Packers injuries are actually payoffs from the RNC so Washington wins!

How can a sports announcer give you special dispensation to do that.... they don't have the sports authority to do that!

Forget it!  Bush is not worth losing my self respect over rooting for the deadskins!

And, no, I am not a Plowboy fan either!

Sox win the Series, Deadskins lose, Bush re-elected!  How about that for breaking curses! !

I guess if Greenbay wins I'll just have to paint my face green and gold and wear my cheesehead to the polls! Or is that a bit over the top? Or maybe it's illegal campaigning?!

Green Bay 28, Washington 14!

I've never voted for a Democratic presidential candidate in my life, but I'll be damned if (as a big-time Dallas Cowboys fan) I'll pull for Washington against anyone.

Well, you never know... it could go 17-1 on Tuesday or whenever this election is deemed over.

It also worked in 1932 when the Redskins were in Boston then known as the Braves.

Yeah well... the Patriot's 21 game winning streak ended this weekend too... and the Red Sox losing streak ended... sounds like a streak of streaks ending...

Another one is the Weekly Reader election. It is a little magazine that has been part of American schools for a long time.

"Since 1956, Weekly Reader students have correctly picked the president 11 out of 12 times, making the Weekly Reader poll one of the most accurate predictors of presidential outcomes in history. " -Link

In their election Bush got over 60%.

Well, I guess we are just going to have to see which indicators were wrong on Tuesday....

Well, this streak got broken.....

Not necessarily the Fox Friends were talking about a bad call that cost the Redskins the game, so it cannot be confirmed until the next election if this streak is broken.
