Shhh...Don't say "Retard"

The new bad word

Call me crazy, but when did it become okay to say cuss words on tv but not "retard?" I was watching a show a few hours ago on MTV when one of the characters said, "He acts like such a bleep!" The bleep wasn't a cuss word or degrading term for a woman or an illegitamate child. The bleeped word was "retard."

Does this strike anyone else as a little ironic? What a sad state of affairs when anyone can say b*tch, b*stard, g*damn, etc. but do not ever say the "r" word.

I think that is retarded.

We can further liberalize our speech laws on coarse language, but other words that have been picked out as offensive are the new taboo by some heavenly group mandating what is proper and what is not in society.

Don't worry, though....

I just spit on them. Then I called them any word they deemed offensive from a list they handed out.

Maybe because we can help it if we're being b**ches or b*stards, but you can't help it if you're mentally handicapped. I also find it funny that when someone says GD on camera, it's the God they bleep and not the d*mn, which you yourself censored.

Isn't retarded a medical term? I always thought it was. Political correctness is going to keep going further and further, until eventually even words like "ferret" and "tongue" will be totally unacceptable.

If one is truly retarded, that person probably has more important and bigger things to fret about than someone on tv using a slang phrase. Of course that is assuming that person even watches and understands such tv shows.

As someone who cannot help being Italian, I am not offended by slang words for other Italians or even stereotypical mafioso portrayals of Italians. I am able to see the humor and enjoy a chuckle at such things because I do not define who I am by any specific label or ethnicity.

Which me myself censored?

why g*damn instead of Godd*mn? Just noticing, didn't mean anything by it.

I was watching Real World (why the hell do we watch that show?) with iamheather and the bleep was pretty retarded. The person saying retarded was acting retarded, whining about this and that, doing the regular Real World drama.
This is from the same network that smears conservative thinkers as limiting the rights of others. I guess it's do what we say, not as we bleep. What a bunch of retards.

Didn't notice that myself. Interesting observation. I guess I was following the tv censor rules. Now I am retarded.

Gonna love those censorship. I remember reading about woman in breast cancer association complaining that "breast cancer" was not allowed but they decided to use "boob cancer" chat room and it was accepted.

That was years ago , and in aol. I have long since quit that sucky service.

Did you know that the Black Eyed Peas song had to be changed from Let's get Retarted to Let's get it Started.

Know what's really funny? I know deaf people that find "hearing impaired" a insult term not deaf.

I don't really care either way and prefers deaf just because it's shorter.

rofl...hear hear! You always keep me laughing little whip!

Actually, the only rule here is something called "person first" language. Which means all your post was wrong LW. Because you wouldn't say "deaf person" or "hearing impaired person," you would say "a person who is deaf" or "a person with a hearing impairment." You would also say "a person with mental retardation" not a "retarded person." The person comes first, not the handicap, out of respect for the person. That's really the only "pc" rule, and it has nothing to do with policing language -- it has everything to do with putting people before their handicaps.
