A couple of recent movies on disc to consider: Leatherheads; Run, Fatboy, Run; and Speed Racer.
First up, Leatherheads. George Clooney's look at the early days of professional football in the U.S. The quick summary: rent-it. Ok, but not great. Probably more entertaining to football fans.
With that one out of the way, lets move on to Run, Fatboy, Run. I enjoyed this one a lot, though I have to say that part of why I watched it was because I had previously enjoyed Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, earlier Simon Pegg starred films. I have to admit I expected something more like one of those films, but that's not what you get from Run, Fatboy, Run as that film instead aims to be more charming.
Run, Fatboy, Run tells us the tale of a somewhat ordinary guy that ran away from his own wedding leaving his pregnant girlfriend at the altar. It seems that must have been the last time that the would be hero ran anywhere as he has let himself go out of shape and now can't seem to run more than a block or two without exhausting himself. What inspires him to start running? Well, the would be love of his life has found a new man and that particular man happens to be running in the upcoming marathon. Our hero decides that by running in the marathon he'll be able to impress his would be wife and perhaps keep her from being with his competition.
The summary for this one: definitely rent-it, but remember it's not Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz. As long as you keep that in mind, you should find it enjoyable.
Finally there's the sensory over-load that is Speed Racer. This one was ok but it was definitely quite flashy and glitzy and probably would be the cause of many seizures if the viewers aren't careful and aware of the styling used here. Rent-it before buying and remember it's styled after an anime TV series and not intended to be realistic at all.
