Most of the fanboys always buy something at the start... Spore has few drm fanboys.

If you equate history, stats of pro-drm versus anti-drm users, and huge amount of pirated copies, it's safe to say spore is about to quickly go down FAST in popularity, as the pro-drm buyers should be close to finishing.

Honestly, I predict 100,000 copies sold, maybe more. The spore saga will probably get pretty hilarious soon.

While I agree with your sentiment, WBS, that if you pirate the game, you're nothing less than a thief, let us know how 'minor' that interference is when you hit the activation limit due to adding/changing hardware. a reinstall of the OS, installing on a new machine, or anything else that ends up burning an activation on you.

I've honestly never run into a problem. Not to doubt their existence, but I've installed my Windows XP copy at least 7 times (I reformat once a year) and when I run out of activations, I just call Microsoft and a helpful friendly technician issues me a new code. Like I said, minor interference.

There are activations for XP? I've reinstalled mine at least 8 times without problems. Maybe its because I have to student version. Who knows.

Microsoft handles activations differently. When you hit the limit, you call them and they help you. When you hit the limit with EA, you call them, and they maybe help you. Yes, some versions don't come with activation limits.

The last one I ran into was a service pack 2 edition that had a 3 activation limit, after which you had to phone home, talk to a computer, and speak your cd key to get extras, the first three were automatic over the internet.

It also gives these companies that insist on using DRM ammunition to point and say "See, we knew you were all just dirty pirates anyway". So then they come up with an even worse system. I personally see nothing hilarious about that.

I got Spore (as a gift) about 10 days ago; it's been sitting on my desk for a week of that 10 days. I have no desire to play it again. It just lays here, a waist of $60 (they got me the strat guide too). I can't take it back, and I'd rather play MOO3 again more than Spore . I feel really sorry for the people that have been waiting for the game for years. ..

From the EA response in the linked article:

“EA has no intentions — nor will they ever — to make it easier for people to play a pirated game… than to play an authentic retail copy.”

If it's anything like my previous experience with SecuROM, It already is.

I guess before any numbers come out I should qualify my original post. These 3:00AM - 4:00AM posts are not as clear as I want - blame it on being dead tired most of the itme. Anyway for the sake of argument, I did not think it would sell over 300k copies the first week and I figured around 500k by the end of the first month. Then a very rapid decline from there. Do I think it will sell over a million, sure I think so by the end of the year with at about half being from x-mas related sales.
